  1. I've seen a lot of AMW and Woewodin, I rank AMW higher.

If Woewodin is getting an edge because of his illustrious name, it isn't only dispiriting to the players not chosen but is poor club culture, which is infectious.

But others better placed to judge than this correspondent

You can't fault Chandler's effort. If his selection is marginal I might give him a tick. A player giving all compels his team mates to greater effort.

It's too early to make definitive calls, but I'll try anyway.

Pickett straight back in for Tholstrup. Was nice seeing his debut but he's not ready and shouldn't have played (not the first time we've got that wrong this year, we have to get better).

Presumably Salem misses. I actually liked Woey's efforts at half-back and wouldn't be against him getting a full game down there. But would be amazing if Hore was fit as he'd be the perfect replacement IMO (push Rivers up more and have Hore cover down back more).

Oliver can't play again with this level of impairment in his hand. If he hasn't improved sufficiently he has to be left out to heal and someone else has to play that role. But if that happens, our depth is going to be really tested as we just don't have the list depth in the middle.

Could see Hunter getting Billings' spot too.

Not sure what else we can do, other than dropping one of Brown or Petty and trying a different look. That might be easier when McAdam's fit but he will need time in the VFL first.

Even money bet that kozzie gets rubbed out again this year for what I will call a high bump.

The VFL is going into recess for one week to allow the representative game against the SANFL as part of Gather Round. The game will be played at Glenelg. Three Casey players were picked to play in the initial 50 man squad, Campbell Hustwaite, Roan Steele and Mitch While. It’s not yet known whether any of that trio have been selected in the final team.

And here we are 48 hours before the game and the AFL still don't seem to have released the team !

SA team is out for some time.

The AFL concedes some instances involving Ginnivan “were not adjudicated correctly” as stated by Laura Kane. In the same breath they claim that Ginnivan “is not umpired any differently to other players.” If his actions aren’t being adjudicated correctly but he’s not being umpired differently, does that mean all other players have instances where the adjudication is incorrect?

This is the problem. She said it. But he is. Her saying it does not make it so.

    Blah, blah, blah. PR rubbish.

As good as Windsor has been I’d give the kid a spell especially with the five day break

Give Woey a full game, Billings the sub & fit May in if fit😀

I'm not the greatest woey fan, but I think that is probably right. And tell woey now.

Jefferson shouldn’t have given that off but why would the skipper Mitch White even call for it? Should’ve told him to settle.

Maybe because he has missed 6 and White would like a win.

Ooooooof course that's the outcome. Hey parents everywhere, the AFL condone players thumping opponents in the solar plexus unawares and off the ball. Keep that in mind when supporting your kids into a sport.

Would like to discuss Pendlebury but no time...I'm off to enrol the grandkids in karate lessons...get ready for lots of broken ribs in a few years when they start doing the old Kung Fu karate chops.

  8. Why the JT and TL protection racket? There have been some clangers. Laurie has not shown near enough to earn this in March. Often average at vfl level.

Of course, it is not the $ itself, but the cap and the spot that is important.

    Hope I'm proved wrong.

I rank him alongside Jefferson but at least with Jefferson if us doubters are proved wrong we will have something of real value. There are always lots of Lauries.

Anyone a little confused by comments coming out of Sydney (Tom Papley in particular) about Essendon and their behind the ball hits on their players?  I'm confused by some in the media discussing this too.

Two words. "Max Gawn"  If you are so concerned Tom, call out the players that took hits at Max behind the play as he's going from contest to contest. Knocking him over, bumping off the ball 30-40m away from play.

Sydney and Port Adelaide constantly bump, and knock Gawn to the ground. Some media condone it, and saying that because Max is such a good player that every team should do it, even calling out MFC players for not doing to opposition teams or defending Gawn. Can't remember who it was, but someone actually called out the Dogs, and why they didn't do it, yet others are saying it should be stamped out, and I agree. Umpires need to be aware of it, and call frees.

Tom Papley, you can't have it both ways, either you are happy with bumping players off the ball, or the tummy taps, or you aren't, but then don't do it to other teams, or target players like Gawn.

    Sydney ? Papley?

    I shakes me 'ead.

where does Casey get its top up players?

    Is there a VFL 2s?

We looked poor but top point Monbon

    There is no VFL 2s.

Casey has a list of players who are called upon, depending on the availability of listed players who are automatic selections.

Spots at Casey can be hard to get where Melbourne has a short injury list.

Casey players play for their local club when not picked at Casey.

Some Casey listed players go a season without call up.

    Very tough gig.

  11. If I was picking the colour of a football jumper, the last colour I would pick is......green.

Why? It matches the grass .

I would pick the colour(s) that make it easiest to spot a teammate...not the hardest.Did they consult an optometrist ?

Maybe fluro.? Maybe a bridge too far .

Is anyone watching the fox coverage? Did anyone else see the clip that jordan Lewis showed where Sydney were running it through the middle and Lewis was highlighting the lack of pressure then the clip showed Degoey and Maynard giving each other a high 5 in the middle.

Sydney kicked a goal from that

If I saw 2 Melbourne players do that while the opposition team were running down and scoring a goal I'd be mad.

Missed it. What was the high 5 for ?

Well that wasn't really how I read "It could be argued that both Hogan and Jackson were busts as key forwards, in that we couldn't keep them at the club".

It sounds like your true argument is "we failed to deal with Hogan and Jackson leaving". I would disagree with that assessment re: Hogan, as converting him into May was precisely what we needed to do at the end fo 2018 and it paid off for 2021. For Jackson, we got the picks but whether or not they work out for us is clearly TBD.

And are you seriously calling JVR a "scrawny, hunch-backed 19 yr old barely noticeable at VFL level"?

He is not talking about jvr. JVR is nothing like that. Quite the opposite.

Hooray, glad we got him then.  Is Jefferson any consideration at the moment or is he really just not competitive enough yet?

I was trying to say that Jefferson is even less physical than schache.

And he is nowhere near competitive enough to be considered.

Can you believe Schache was a sub over Grundy in the final v Carlton .. how the hell is this guy getting a game

Hard to believe. Even harder if you had seen Grundy's last game for Casey previously. Inexplicable.

How could you lose Grundy and keep Schache who has had plenty of chances.

Unless we make the sport completely no contact there will always be concussions even with perfectly legitimate tackles, random collisions of 2 players going for the ball.   If you don't want 'no contact' then you have to rank actions which can cause concussion vs the degree you are prepared to change the game.   My guess is that speccies would be low on the 'cause concussion' index and high on the 'not changing the game' index.

We need to sort this out: is it "specky", "spekky", "specie" or "speccie"? I think the first. Definitely not third or fourth. But there may be others

  17. I see Anna Pavlou of channel 9 wide world of sports writes that Oliver was "sent back to vfl level" for the practice match.

Couldn't she have managed to write "champ stars in vfl practice match".

I have had a complete gutful of football media. Big cull coming in my consumption of this garbage.

I think on the whole the young men playing AFL/vfl football are a fine group of people. There will be stumbles. And many come from difficult backgrounds. But overall, great.

Always looking for a error from any player from any team.

So, Anna, no Pulitzer prize for you but you are in the running for the Kane Cornes Award . Prize is a dictionary.

Anna graduated in media (football) from Latrobe in 2022 so there is a fair chance, along with  Kane, she would struggle to spell "cat".
