I think think our coaches are open to resting and rotating players more so than we have done in recent seasons.

I don't think we can take Norf lightly but If May is carrying a niggle I'd rest him and give Disco a crack.

Similarly if vineys knee needs a rest Give Dunstan a run.

Same goes with Grundy. If he needs a freshen up after covering as a sole ruck, let Shaq a run along side Gawn.

Provides an opportunity to reward strong VFL form too

Heck, why don't we just bring in the Casey side then ?

Get where you are comming from in part.

I'm not so much one for chipping Goody and the selection pannel for their mantra of maintaining stability within the senior side, but it also did feel a bit at times last season that we perhaps could have used our opportunities to rotate more player's through the senior side at times.

I'd agree though, that during our mid season slump in particular our depth was tested and strained by having a number of players out at once, like Gawn, Jackson, May, T Mac and perhaps Viney/Trac?/Oliver miss over a period of a month or so, which I think really hurt in retrospect.

I'm also glad we didn't throw in JvR into the finals pressure cooker in desperation.

Don't think our Casey Premiership counts for nothing in terms of depth though.

If you read some of the recient comments from Alan Richardson, I think there's a bit of an admission that perhaps the team and coaching pannel went a bit too conservative and defensive in the back half of last year and perhaps weren't will to take risks that could have created better energy in the second half of games etc.  I think the team selection aspect could be part of that conversation.

Surely Dunstan must be a chance next week if we are thinking of dropping Chandler ? ( who I really like for all the reasons above)

    Fabulous interview thanks.

Judd sounds like a very well adjusted, confident and committed young man.  There will of course be ups and downs but he is handling things brilliantly so far. 👏👏

Does Judd automatically get upgraded now he has signed a contract.? OR is he still on the Rookie list ?

I'll be interviewing Demon rookie Judd McVee on the Demonland Podcast tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. If you have any questions that you'd like Judd to answer let me know below. I'll post the interview here some time on Thursday evening so look out for it wherever you get your podcasts.

    Judd McVee.png

Just a question: ( through ignorance I suspect)  Is Judd still considered a "Rookie" now he is playing the elite level ? and is he upgraded to the Senior list ?

In exciting news, we’re holding an open training session at 2:15pm on Saturday afternoon at North Adelaide football club, according to MFC media.

I make that 85 minutes before we play Essendon, assuming our media department are on point.

FND you don't understand the Freo watch is all to do with our early Future Round Picks in this years draft as a result of the Jacko deal.

Who really cares about a 27/8 yo who is overweight and only loves himself at a Club that is about as tarnished as him.

You gotta give Essendon some credit afterall they blooded Melks and Hibbo who have been great additions to the Demon 22 over the years.

As a player, I like Jordan, think he he has a lot of upside. I also think Sparrow has far more potential as our next inside bull. I just don’t see where Jordan fits, and maybe neither does he

Maybe good for a first round pick swap plus player next draft ......with a really low Team.

This is a real oppprtunity to put the foot on the throat of the Eagles.

Goody will need to enforce the no mercy rule though to avoid it becoming a casual slack fumbly shiiiitfest where the boys only do 'just enough' and we only win by 2 or 3 goals

Maybe Hunty could help us as well.....

    Rest?

It's round 4 mate and he's one of the fittest guys on our list and also best starting 18. We're not resting blokes purely for the sake of needing a rest just to open a spot up.

Not only that it's the reason why our forwards have functioned so well this year because it's the likes of ANB who is able to get up the ground and create the space behind, but also provide an extra link up option from mid to half forward

With McGovern out this week I'm fairly sure Petty, Fritsch and JVR can easily kick a winning score.

    Out: Brown

    In: Pickett.

looks like BBB, Hibbo  and Lever have some issues as well. I feel that our strength is in our backup Casey players and I would not risk these guys if not fully fit.

    ANB  JVR  Sparrow

    Pickett BBB* Fritsch

    Grundy Trac Oliver

    int  Spargo JJ Brayshaw Chandler

    sub  Howes / Melksham

*Probably Tmcd in if BBB injured or

*maybe Tomlinson in if BBB injured (Petty goes forward)

My 2 Bobs worth says:-   IN  Kickett (for sure) and rest BBB

But guys what about the games of Tomlinson and Howes Sunday. They were electrifying.

    Brown Out, Pickett in.

Would like to see Viney out for Howes, but not sure Jack would get dropped being captain. I feel he is probably our biggest watch over the next few weeks. Disposal poor, decision making poor. JJ is a much better 3rd midfield option and Koz back will squeeze Jack out.

    WTF

I haven't read this whole thread, so this question may have already been asked and answered, but if May and Petty both play is using Tomlinson as Grundy's relief a viable option? I'm not averse to van Rooyen playing, but we have to recognise that Grundy needs support for up to 6 weeks, not just one. Is it feasible for van Rooyen to be second ruck for 6 weeks?

Your question has merit but I think we need to remind ourselves who we are playing and at what level despite the relatively unknown factors as to how good Sth Melb are this year. So indoctrinating JVR in this game I think is not a wise move. I would therefore seek experience in the form of JJ and / or Tomlinson. Save JVR for a lower / lesser team indoctrination . We cannot afford to gamble and also lose 4 points. But we need Maysie back for sure.

Don't think they'll make more than 3 changes unless forced (injury), Goodwin and co. have always favoured continuity and consistency. May for Thommo plus someone for Max would be 2. Then it's perhaps a tossup between JJ for Harmes and Hibberd for McVie.

Tom Mac has indeed been underwhelming, but Max out perhaps throws him a lifeline, at least for a bit. Not the week to be dropping a tall who can pinch-hit.

One change:  Gawn out - Srawbs in...

According to today’s Herald Sun ~

“While the Dees will lose star forward Kysaiah Pickett, they have four reinforcements likely to be available from their 2021 premiership side - Christian Salem (thyroid), Jack Viney (knee), Steven May (calf) and Bayley Fritsch (foot).

“The quartet successfully completed the Demons session at Gosch’s Paddock on Monday.”

would you really want to drop McVee. Just think the confidence booster of another game may set him up for a life time of Demonisism.

    Assume it’s

    B: Lever, May, Rivers

    HB: Brayshaw, Petty, Bowey

    C: Langdon, Oliver, Hunter

    HF: Neal-Bullen, McDonald, Chandler

    F: Pickett, Brown, Spargo

    R: Gawn, Petracca, Harmes

    I: Grundy, Sparrow, Laurie, McVee

    Sub. Jordon

Rumors about   May ??   anyway JJ should get a game ahead of McVee or Laurie.  BUT call me wrong cause McVee and Laurie are playing in the best 22

The sad thing for me is that when we had 35,000 members we get 20-25,000 dees fans to our games.

When we had 45,000 members we got 20-25000 dees fans to our games.

When we had 55,000 members we got 20-25000 dees fans to our games.

    Reckon you get my drift.

We get all these extra members but how many of them actually turn up to games? They just get a membership that either gets them a GFG (our reserved areas were never close to full last year) or 3 game memberships where they may or may not turn up to three games across the year.

The only times we ever seem to get more than 30,000 of our own to our home games is when we give free tickets away (Saints 2017, GWS 2018) Queens Birthday sometimes or when we unfurl a flag (there were 50k of us for that).

Even Anzac Eve home games we get majorly outnumbered by the Tiges - last year was the most Melbourne fans I've seen to an Anzac Eve game and we were the away team.

All these great members numbers of 65,000 or 75,000 is great for some revenue but these people aren't turning up to the games. That is where we have to improve and it will be interesting to see our crowds this year when we have home games against all the big Victorian Clubs except Essendon in primetime slots.

Whilst I agree with your theory my suggestion is that it takes many years for the increase in game attendance flows through. To me it is a generational change where Parents buy tickets for the children for the reasons you state  then when the children get indoctrinated into the Melbourne "way" they then purchase their own and then their families tickets. If you look at the likes of Richmond and to a lesser extent Carlton they have had strong memberships for years built off the appearances they have had in the top "eight"

  17. So missing as far as I can see are:

Viney, (inj) Fritsch, (inj)  Salem, (inj)  Tomlinson, ??  Rivers, (wonder why ?) Dunstan and J Smith of the "worthy"  to be selected otherwise I like the strength of the squad.

anyone wish to add to my concerns ?

Annoying that media gets hold of this before the club even releases anything official.

Unfortunately the Media are not interested in facts but sensationalising the news so they get Media attention and newspapers sold. Look what they have done to Kozzie of late.

Kane Cornes reckons Port have been “working on” Kozzy Pickett for over 12 months and that they remain “cautiously optimistic” about landing him.
It’s really exhausting seeing the unnecessary angst that the media can create among supporters.
Other than Cornes spouting this story with his own self-interest at play, there’s been little chatter from anyone else. Not to mention, that the last we heard from the Melbourne camp on the matter was from Tim Lamb in October saying:
💬 “Any talk about Kozzy leaving is absolutely ludicrous. We love Kozzy, Kozzy loves us.”
In The Age as recently as February 14, Jon Pierik reported that Melbourne are “increasingly confident” Kozzy would sign a new contract.
Steer clear; don’t be led down Kane’s rabbit hole 😏

Which is  ironic because when he was North, all an opponent had to do was breath on him and he'd get a free kick.

That was one of the reasons I was excited about when we picked him up.

That was because players back then never brushed their teeth before a game so breathing on BBB brought anger of the smell of bad breathe to the Umpires . It's a new AFL rule now that players have to clean their toothy pegs before a game.  Rule: 1423.6 para 535
