My prediction is the Tigers will throw everything they can muster at us early.

Possibly even heading into half-time in front.

Then this particular thread will become a place of darkness. Season over. Certain players will be told to never play for us again.

Then the more well-rounded team (ours) will systematically carve it’s way to a 42-point win.

    Hooray!

    Great call Mel👏

With all due respect to the contributors, there’s absolutely zero doubt that the podcast would be twice as good if it were half as long.

I like it in its current form and length. Fits very nicely with the amount of driving I have to do on a Tuesday. You can always play it at 2x if that suits you better.

a top 5 pick would be tempting if they threw in their seconder rounder as well.

During the same report that Ralph said Petty was likely to stay at the Dees, he said Adelaide are keen to trade in a player and that their first two picks are on the table. I think they have a F/S pick this year that is likely to go in the first round so they will be happy to trade out their first couple of picks and bank a lot of late picks for points.
If Petty doesn’t resign we have another death ride.
    Really hope he signs soon

I can’t remember a good player leaving Geelong. They know how to hold onto their players.

    Even Gazza came back!

Must be the lifestyle, maybe the cheaper cost of living or perhaps the farm they though in.

You gotta wonder how a player of such undeniable talent can come so close to missing out on being drafted!

Would love to know what the issues were with his game because he is playing with skill, poise and an IQ that puts him amongst the best young players in the league.

I could be mistaken but think from memory injury and covid stopped him from playing any footy in his draft year. JT liked what he saw in the under 16s.

Correction. I just checked the 2024 AFL Tribunal info brochure. This will be Kozzie's 3rd appearance at the tribunal in the last 2 years. The best outcome possible with a 3rd early guilty plea to "Careless, Low impact, High Contact" is a fine of $6250. Lets hope that is the case...

    AFL fines.png

This would be an awesome outcome imo. Let him pay it himself. Paying over that sort of cash might make him think twice about it in the future. missing games doesn’t seem to work.
He had a late bump late in the game to that could have cost us a shot on goal as well.

Geelong also have a 5 day break and they have to travel, and played in ridiculous weather with a delay. We are not that hard done by.

Agreed. I don’t think we have anything to complain about. If anything I think our draw this year is outstanding. 5 day break is a pain in the bum but having both games as away games in the one city eases it.
Also we have an extra days break for the game next week and the lions are away from home on consecutive weeks in different cities.
To top it of when then get a 2 week bye afterwards which I think is probably the best time to have our first bye. Gives us an advantage over all other clubs bar Richmond.

I did too (pick them to rise), but not because of their list as much as the fact that nicks had implemented a game plan and system that reflect what successful teams have put in place - fast  effective transition from the back half.

And they appeared to be super fit.

Together this made them offensively strong - they scored more points than any other team last year  which is pretty remarkable given they didn't make the 8.

My query was their defensive system, but i assumed nicks was sorting offence first before sorting the defensive system.

And perhaps that's what they have been focusing on as they have really slowed their ball movement (of course that could be a result of opposition coaches implementing tactics to negate their strengths - or a bit of both).

They may come good. But they don’t look as fit as last year and i don't agree their group of younger players are that talented. We have a more talented group of 22 and unders.

And I'd add that they relied a lot on Walker last year, and he looks like a crock thus far, and Fogerty is one dimensional and like Walker zero help in terms of contributing to all team defence. Two plodders.

Thilthorpe looks a player, but he'll be lucky to play this season with the time frame for his knee injury still 4-5 months.

I also thought the Crows would be moving up the ladder this year, they were hard done by to not reach the finals and I felt they were one of the fittest teams at the end of the home and away. Think had they made finals they may have won one or two.

I haven’t seen much of them this year but I wonder if the Burgess fitness factor loses its edge after a couple of years?!  Our fitness certainly dropped off the year after he left. Perhaps that was down to that fact that his hard running/train through injures type of training is hard to maintain for any longer than a couple of seasons.

Selwyn Griffith was questioned in his first year but perhaps our drop in fitness was more to do with a Burgess hangover.

Gee Petty loves to be a pest. Would be annoying to play on. Was at Alir all night.

I’ve noticed this in both his games this season. Seems to be playing with a bit more mongrel in him. Quick to defend other players and seems to genuinely enjoy getting in the face of the opposition.

Gee I hope he signs another contract with us.

  10. Agree we need to get games into younger players. I think the club will have looked at what happened with Bedford and be keen not to make the same mistake again. If we don’t get games into young players we run the risk of losing them.
It was interesting to hear JT suggest that we drafted for needs to an extent this year and that our two first round picks are our in his opinion are the most likely to debut first this year.
Drafting for this flag window and also for the future.

AFL to overhaul draft on Father/Son picks

“What’s that you say? The Dees have got three gun father son picks coming up? Time to put a stop to this!”

It’s about making clubs part with first round picks to secure F/S if their selection gets nominated in the first round, to stop what happened this year, with R1 bloating out to 29 picks.

The idea will be overseen by Geoff Walsh and was proposed by Graeme Allen (and Steven Wells) as soon as the Daicos boys were picked up for nothing.

Changes won’t come in until after the Lions get a second top 5 father and son pick next year. Typical AFL reaction. Allow it to massively advantage some clubs and then shut it down.

25 and 33 became 34 and 40 as the draft went on due to academies and father sons.

As I said. 40 had almost no value to us. We spun 44 for a Saints future 3rd. Do we need another future 3rd on top of that?

We used 34 to get up 3 spots to get Tholstrup.

Essendon gave up 36 for 1 spot.

GWS gave up a future 2nd in a deeper and less compromised draft to go 1 spot to get Leake.

We would’ve had to pay to get up one spot to get Leake. We weren’t ever linked to Wilson.

Clearly we thought getting above Sydney and St Kilda was important.

There’s an argument to stay where we were at 18 and take Wilson, Edwards or DeMattia.

The counters are; obviously JT has been good at this trade up business at times. We’ve committed the list spots to Billings, Hore, Melk, Ben Brown, T Mc and they all have value to try to win a flag now. We do have a solid crop of young talent now as is. And the second rounders in this draft weren’t worth more than mid year rookies, late picks, SSP additions etc in future years.

Your right about the pick for Leake. I forgot GWS traded up the spot with Saints. And Tim Lamb did say by moving up it allowed us access to a tier of players that we wouldn’t have had access to if we didn’t move up.

Can’t really agree with you logic about the value of the picks we traded though.  We traded two good second round picks during trade week when they had their most value. When the Suns were trying to load up on points. We traded 42 to Saints at the worst possible time we there were few takers and everybody knew we wanted rid of it. Normally you would expect to improve your hand if you trade out early not worsen it.

You mentioned the McAdam trade we traded our future 2nd to get him. Second rounders have good value especially early ones. The fact that we didn’t have list spot just mean we would had to  trade into next year.

They way I see it we had an each way bet on the Harley Reid cup( and from listening to JT it sounds like WC were genuinely considering our offer).

We lost our win bet but collected the place in getting Koltyn to the club which  I’m very excited about.

    And achieve what exactly?

Harmes - McAdam. I'm more than happy with that. We've had nothing for Harmes to do for 2 years and have been crying out for a guy like McAdam to provide a mix of what Fritsch and Kossie do.

JJ - Billings. JJ might go on to be a player for the Swans but he was a free agent, we replaced him with a player who could be an immediate upgrade in a needs position.

Grundy - Fullarton. Personally I'd have liked to get in on the Brandon Ryan deal but Fullarton has a fair bit of upside and I'd rather have him than an unhappy and expensive Grundy.

33 was worthless in this draft. Would've ended up pick 40 on the night of the draft. We ended up with a spare pick 42 (44 come draft night) which we dealt for a future 3rd.

25 became 34 on draft night. Ended up at Carlton for Billy Wilson. 18, 34 and a pick we'd never use for 13 to get Tholstrup. Doesn't look so bad when Essendon and GWS gave up 2nd rounders to move 1 spot on draft night.

We've replenished our depth with better fits and drafted 2 talented kids. It's not flashy but the flashy moves often don't work out. Plus surely we're reloading with list spots and salary cap to be more aggressive next year.

I don’t think it’s too hard to make a case that we paid overs to move up to 11.  Our original pick ended up being James Leake who I really like the look of and Darcy Wilson was still on the board. 25 & 33 is a lot more draft capital than we got for trading Grundy( an AA ruck).
We didn’t have the list spots but could have traded into next year and  held a much stronger draft hand.
JT said that the move up was two fold- to be in a position to grab a better player and to be in a better position to try and/or get one of the top picks which ultimately we were unable to get.
We are normally quite aggrieved with our pick trades. It’s worked for us in the past. We probably lost this time round.

  14. Thanks for the  interview Andy. Thought JT was still pre draft interview mode a bit and not wanting to give too much away.
Sounds like we have been keen on Windsor since start of last season. Surprised that he thought our two new recruits are the most likely to debut in their first season ahead of others who have already been on the list.
He was also keen to let us know that it’s going to take a while for last years tall picks to be ready.
JVR is the exception not the rule.
Thanks again, always enjoy listening to JT and yourself of course 😊

  15. Looking forward to seeing if Jefferson has managed to put on a few kegs in the off season. I was looking for some YouTube footage of our new recruits when I stumbled across the 2022 game of Vic Metro vs WA when he kicked 7!! Don’t think anybody managed to kick a bag that big in this years champs.

I remember an interview he gave this year where he mentioned he’s already put on 6/7kg. If he managed to put on the same again he will be an interesting watch this preseason.

  16. This is my biggest worry for next year. I think the extra bye in round 6 could be a big help to keeping Max fresh and injury free but you can’t help but feel that if the great man goes down injured then our season is cooked.

I feel as though the footy department must have a move up their sleeve or know something we don’t. Perhaps they think Verral will progress quicker than others do.
Perhaps one of Hore and Melksham won’t make the rookie list. Hore might go to Casey or we find a coaching role for Jake.
I just find it hard to believe that the same footy department that made a big move last year to bring in a second AA ruck would roll the dice on big Max staying fit.

Won’t know about that for about3/4 years just like the Kelly trade off!

I am happy but really this draft was much deeper than most if you believe Montagna Ablett and Shifter!! Still raving about depth into the 60’s draft no’s!!

Yeah I tend to think time will show that this was a quality draft. Both for top end talent and depth. Cal rated his top 10 in this years draft higher than 2018. I think the first round quality also went pretty deep. Wilson went pick 18 and should have a solid AFL career.

A lot of list managers and recruiters said that the next tier of player( from say pick 18 onwards) was very even rather than poor. Take Collingwood for example they would be stocked to get DeMattia at 25 and Tee Jiath at 37.

I think the trade up from 14-11 was more about putting our hat in the ring for Reid or another one of the top 4. I guess you have to be in it to win it but unfortunately we lost. We didn’t have the list spot this year anyways but we could have had a much stronger hand next year.

Would we have used 27 and 35.

Seems to me that with keeping Melksham, McDonald and Brown that list spots were constrained this year by comparison to next when we could easily have 5 spots available.

I'll never understand keeping Schache as a back up ruck though

Probably not be we could have turned them into one or two good picks for next year.

Depends what you call class and Caleb’s got it. Smooth running long kick goal scoring and great link man on the wing.
I’ll back JT’s judgement against yours Danny any day or night at the G!

I would say every poster on here would back JT over any other poster.
We can still all have opinions and be civil about it. No need to be shoot down other posters for the sake of it.
By the way every form guide that was published during the season agreed with Danny.
