Thoughts on Trent Rivers? Feels like he's grown into a senior head this year and his game has gone up levels. I always felt in the premiership year he was such a brave and desperate defender and epitomized our hunger and desire that year. This year he's got that back but he's added damage to his game.

Dont think we need to be top 2 to win it. Pies will either be 1 or 2 so we can get a game at G against them and I do think if Port are top 2 we can beat them away at our best.
Either way, focus on Geelong. We are typically [censored] off a bye and they've given us the cats in Geelong!
As for the record, if we go in on a 4-5 game streak into finals that will be enough to build confidence in the squad. Ideally we got 8-2 at worse.

Easy to get a run on in a quarter when you don't turn up for the other 3.
Tired of hearing about our midfield, rack up the numbers but can apply pressure for 4 quarters. Wonder if it has to do with our terrible fitness coach.

I love Rivers but hes the king of getting cheap one done on him

We have to be the worse side in the AFL at going for the ball and keeping it front of us.
Every time we pick the ball we are so easily pushed/bumped off the ball and the ball goes tumbling out to the opposition favoured side while we have 3 players running to the other side for a cheap one.

People will hammer Tomlinson, but Steven May was a joke today. Took no responsibility when things got tough then lost his head in the 2nd half. Did nothing right.
Grundy and Petty were also pathetic, I don't care if Petty gets on the end of a couple in the wet or plays while hurt, weak early.

Can we discuss who has had the most underwhelming start of the season?
I am starting to worry about Angus Brayshaw. Not sure if the issue is where he is playing or something else.
On the other hand JVR, McVee and JJ have been great additions to the team.
What's underwhelming to you about his season so far?
Don't just say he's underwhelming and not provide something to actually critique. Per my comment in response to Travy14 about Petty, our D50 looks weirdly out of shape due to the rotation of Petty forward. I think Brayshaw is a victim of this as he's being asked to man a mid-sized or a tall key forward at times.
Aside from that, I think he offers a hard head and composure to our D50 which helps us lock the ball in our forward half.

That game was a hard watch. But did what we needed and the overpower the Eagles.
I think Petty showed that although he was drafted as a forward, he has lost all forward craft. He has no leading patterns and looks uncomfortable being in front in marking contests, fine to swing fwd in games but I don't thing we can play him as a permanent forward. Agree or should we persist with him?
To add onto this, I was at the game sat in the 2nd tier stand behind the goal at the Melbourne cheer squad end. It was noticeable when the Eagles went forward that they had advantageous match ups constantly but poor kicking/decision making got us off the hook.
Harrison Petty is a good player so he will have games up forward that are really damaging and will make us want to persist with him up forward but in my opinion, we need 3 talls + a mid-size option like Hibberd in our D50. Not 2 talls, 1 mid-size option and 3 smalls.

This injury sub might work out for the dogs, despite Keath being their best defender.
They are all over the Tigers and getting a fresh player for the 2nd quarter could lead to this being a blow out.

Doggies looking good, which is good for my tips.

The same logic could be applied in reverse.
I'm guessing the standard recruiters lines would go something like:
"Picking the best available at that pick"
"We really rated such and such, so that's why we selected them at that pick"
I think it somewhat is a credit to Taylor and Co's credit that we are able to select these diamonds in the rough with late picks and then our development guys and team culture to turn them into solid players.
I'm guessing that if the selectors thought it was a really line ball decision or a player had a really strong go home factor about them (Nick Nat / Watts), them maybe that might sway them to pick the home grown tallent. Otherwise, I think Jason Taylor did sum it up recently in a Demonland interview that for every player that does go home, a bunch stay and you can't generally let it influence the player selection. We've also been on the receiving end of a couple of super star come home to Vic's in Linngers and Lever, so I think it's swings and round abouts to a fair extent.
It does swing in roundabouts but I look at the Crows/Power and now Eagles in their rebuild, it's insane how much good SA talent is there that they could've picked up themselves.

I really don't understand why interstate teams don't favour draft players from their state.
You completely eliminate go home factor and make it extremely hard for other players to poach your lads.

If Oliver and Petracca play at this level for another 5 years then it will be hard to argue they weren't better just for the body of work. Remember Judd left West Coast, Cousins went off the rails and Kerr became injury prone. Oliver and Trac are here until 2029. Gawn will retire a lifer.
In our history, you will be hard press to not include those 3 in our best-ever 22 after all is said and done.

Over the last 4 years, 26 current listed players have played 5 or more games a season. Do you think that's enough rotation?
I wouldn't be against McVee, JVR, Taj, Laurie and Howes all getting runs from round 1 to the BYE and then you pick your best 22 from there. What are your thoughts?

Does anyone know if any sessions are happening at Gosch's Wednesday or Thursday? (I know the practice game is Friday but unable to attend most likely).
I'm in Melbourne for a few days so would love to see the boys in person, the first time since the Grand Final :)

How the [censored] is Harmes, Chandler, and ANB getting games... Don't remember the last goal either 3 kicked.
It wouldn't be an unpopular position to put pressure on the coaching staff to fix this [censored] absurd field and goal-kicking or get sacked.
I ask anyone who thinks that's an overreaction to actually think about what's happening. A team with a core group between 25-27 won a flag two years and now it's going to be 2 years of wasted potential because there is no pressure to fix such obvious floors.
Never met a team built more for contested footy suck so bad at wet weather footy.
