Will be real interesting to see how he goes without Gawns support and mentoring.

Pressure will be immense to perform and no doubt the Freo ferrals will let him know if he ain’t going well.

Will be interesting to see how he goes against Gawn and Grundy

So it could work out as Pick 13, 12 and 30 (next year) for Bedford and 44 and 67

Next years draft is meant to be excellent so 12 and 30 should be able to be packages to get into top 10

    Not too bad, considering

Club will be confident they can use pick 30 to move either first round picks forward this year or next otherwise this would drag out further

I mentioned that you may have missed it because of your poor judgement. Weid has improved his competitiveness in the ruck and most Casey and /L ers agreed his work in the last half of the season mostly on his own was both his best and most impactful with the packs and round the ground.

No One  in their right mind would go in with Harmes and Joel Smith as AFL rucks less the ground was an absolute bog. Yes setting up right is vital but goes both ways either your taps or opponents do why not get your own as well.

Your assessment of Weids contribution in the ruck to Casey Demons Flag is both insulting and inaccurate in view of the whole hearted effort and absolute attitude plus improvement that he produced in  the last  half a season.

Sounds like your emotionally connected to this guy. Chill out. Is this the same back up ruck that can't get a game and the club appear happy to trade to Essendon for a packet of chips?

You didn't see Weid in the Casey jumper near the end of the year Smith or Harmes are not tall enough to compete in AFL even Smith's jumping would not be impactful.
That's why we will keep a Weid for rucking as the SC and Goody don't share your views about our second stringers.

You're assuming a few things. 1. that l didn't see Weid in the VFL where he was a touch more competative but still not AFL standard and 2. That the ruck needs to win tap outs when in fact you don't if you set up right and have an extra onballer at ground level like Harmes. Weid is old news

I’ve seen a lot of we lost Mitch Brown but he played 4 games in the last 2 years, all one off cameos. And JVR is now ready as the 3rd key forward behind Ben and Tom.

Weid is 3rd ruck as well as 4th key forward so in theory could be stuck trying to be 2 places at once but the hope would be one of Gawn/Grundy are available for most of the year.

Melk’s also staying on as emergency 5th key forward.

That’s all without Petty forward or something more out of the box like Howes as a hit up tall.

My point is I don’t think we actually need more depth for depths sake unless we think McDonald and Brown are in serious strife and/or we think Bruce is quick fix fitness wise and an upgrade. Maybe he is?!

Weideman would be traded if Bruce came in l think. Melk isnt going to make our forward line function as he is too small for the long bombs. Coaches want the old model with resting ruck, BB and someone that can compete for the long bombs to support BB coming in from the side ie Tmac, Bruce, JVR ....  if grundy and gawn are injured then play Joel Smith / Harmes in the ruck they will compete better than Weid anyhow

  6. The trade makes, both had knee issues, both struggling to find their best form since, both playing some vfl, both behind a few in their respective positions ... just don't want to hear 'pony up' used again

There is still a chance Dogga will be a Demon in 2023 according to the Demons calendar on the AFL Store.

That would be right, he is on the March calendar, and missing in the later season months

  8. Should be better the 2nd year after coming off a knee ... makes sense if there isn't anyone else on the market and its a straight swap ... would be ahead of weid for a start and atleast shown he can elevate his level. Weid can go to saints after

If the picks we swapped were worth pick 14, I wonder why we didn’t just give them to Pies to use in other deals.

I think teams are avoiding later picks in this years draft as its been said to be soft outside the top end is my guess ... in a soft year those picks don't actually equal pick 14

There is no universe in which we got '"bent over" by Adelaide. You don't get a proven, 21 YO gun key position player without paying a premium in draft picks, even if uncontracted. Just as Freo will need to come up with 2 first round picks (or equivalent) to land Jackson.

If we'd played hardball, maybe we'd have got him for a 1st and a 2nd round. Maybe. Alternatively, maybe Adelaide would have walked him to the PSD, or struck an 11th hour deal with another club who were willing to pay a fair price. Or maybe Freo and GC wouldn't have been as keen to deal with us the following year and we would never have landed May.

Dodoro plays hardball and 'wins' every trade week. How's that working out for Essendon?

Not talking hard ball, its just we played soft ball in just this one trade. Adelaide got more than market value. His best and fairest results and need for the team to play a particular structure for him to shine proves that

Bagging the Lever trade is such a weird hill to die on.

Sure, we got Lever and Petty (and, as a direct consequence, a [censored] premiership flag), but with the picks we gave up we could have had...

    *checks notes*

Liam Stocker and one half of a 29-year-old Bryce Gibbs...

Lever could retire tomorrow and it would still go down as one of our best trades in the AFL era.

We could and should have got Lever and the premiership without bending over to Adelaide for lesser picks.

I'm not a huge Lever fan (when compared with many of our other players) but he seems to be a critical player not just in a structural / role sense - but providing leadership in the dying moments when it's needed most.  Think of his kick to max at the end of Rd23 last year or his kick into the centre at the end of the carlton match this year.

I'm hoping that injuries did hamper him this year and that he will be back to last year's form next year.

Agree with most of that, but has he played consistently like a pick 5 each year? No way, but like all key positron players they are important to structure. Re the Carlton kick, unlike the Geelong one, it was a miss kick in my opinion, but points for being there first to the ball

Dunstan is already on our list. He doesn't need to 'come into Harmes' spot' on the list.

No context change needed, just some hand holding and walking through apparently.

The point you miss again is that Dunstan or others can replaces Harmes and in the starting 22 and we dont lose too much on field. Harmes salary can be used for our key needs ... but you keep going back to old posts

And was part of the best defense recorded by the AFL in a premiership winning season.
Did we overpay for May who is almost 30?

You should check May's b and f record and compare it to Lever. Lever has had 1 very good season and struggles to function unless the defensive structure is set up for him where he can leave his man

We paid equivalent of ~pick 5 for a player with enough exposed form and runs on the board that it was pretty guaranteed he'd play for us in a key role for 10 years. Statistically that isn't overs.

    The KK neck/concussion thing:

Correct pick 5 for a player that had been top 10 in b and f once and came 19th this season

What's the evidence we paid overs for Lever? A complete myth. Amongst other wins for us out of the deal, we welcomed Petty to Melbourne and secured an all Australian and key Premiership player. We are asking for a similar exchange for Jackson.

Lever has finished top 10 in our best and fairest 1 in five years and finished 19th this year

You were looking at a later post mate. This is the original one here.

You replied directly to his comment where he implied we had depth in the form of Dunstan and others. Your so selective with your quotes above. And who cares what order it was in, you failed to fully appreciate the broader potential benefits of trading harmes out given the glut in mids which was suggested to you

Just to clarify, I was responding originally to SWYL who was suggesting Dunstan come into the team for Harmes role.

This is a different conversation to the dynamics of list management.

I have read his post and he talks about covering Harmes with Dunstan or other good young options we have in the VFL. Implying that we have depth in those roles. You may have missed the point he was making

Nah. Dunstan is just a slower and less versatile Harmes, and doesn't fit with our midfield mix at all IMO. Good depth though.

Agree harmes is better, but its money ball and if you have a glut of depth in any area that isn't fully utilised then you move them on and go get (or retain) another ruck / forward / winger that covers up a bigger hole and that then drives significant improvement
