I know some supporters are wired to think of the best possible case scenario no matter what, but when a player starts every game on the bench, plays less minutes in every game than previously, and can no longer run like they used to, or burst out the front of stoppages like they used to, there's probably a reason. For an elite mid he's the footballing equivalent of fat. But you're welcome to stay in denial like plenty of others.

It's pretty amazing to me that supporters can't see the difference in conditioning from 2025 to 2021. ''Fat'' is obviously contextual when it comes to a highly paid professional AFL player. I'll let you work out which photo is from which year.

Twinkle toes is a great little player but he most definitely does have flaws. On numerous occasions he's taken short steps, which has been well publicized. That said, he seems to have largely eradicated that from his game. The best mids I've ever seen have a physical intimidation and can go forward and take contested marks. Little Nicky hasn't taken a single contested mark in 76 games. An extraordinary achievement. For example, I doubt anyone thinks contested marking is Jack Viney's prowess. Viney took 19 contested marks in his first 76 games. Daicos is 5cm taller. Some players play taller than their stature, he plays smaller. But he's super fast, has an incredible footy IQ, and sublime deft touch. A great little player.

Did I read someone say he ''tore through packs'' ? Please. Petracca has noticeably avoided contact and marking situations this year. I don't blame him after his injury, but it's nonetheless plain to see. Petracca has zero captaincy potential. Zero. It's also well known he's not popular with some established players. It's great to see he's getting closer to playing good football.

He's probably training as hard as ever, because it's what he knows when he's at the club and with his teammates. But it may be what he's doing away from the club. What he's eating, when he's eating, how much he's eating, whether he's doing all the one percent things to be in peak physical conditioning. It's impossible to believe he's giving himself the best chance to perform at an elite level. Well, it is for me.

Oliver's pace for an inside mid was always above average. But when you're overweight it slows you down bit.

That award goes to GWS. Their charcoal strip is fantastic. But we did win an award. The award for the most listless and dispirited team I've seen in a decade goes to the MFC. 15 of the 23 on Friday night played in the 2021 premiership. Nearly all are still in their prime or close enough to it. They're now playing bottom 3 football after having all preseason to refine their strategies. Clearly, there's something very wrong at this football club.
