I want Weid to get stronger through the hips and core. Not necessarily put on more weight, just get stronger so that he doesn't get pushed off the ball as easily.

He has many good attributes that we underestimate, and is somewhat a confidence player. Presents well, gets to contests, can hold a grab (despite the naysayers) and knows where the cumbers are are around him. He knows his role, but must get stronger to improve it.

Also needs to nail more set shots.

All of these things are relatively simple to fix in the scheme of things, pending a big preseason.

I'm a Weid fan, so to speak...

I’d like Weideman to do all sorts of things, perhaps with another club! I’m doubting our investment in him will pay off. FWIW I would retain Tom while trying to get Brown . The Weid would be very tradeable

    When? Which match?

a lot depend on what one makes of Tomlinson. Lever does not play as a key defender. Never has, he didn’t at Adelaide where Talia and Brown were the key defenders. Lever can, nevertheless be useful if given little responsibility on a gun player . Can Tomlinson play as a key defender? Or Smith? Perhaps Petty will be the man. I haven’t minded Oscar playing a purely defensive role on a tall forward

No better example of correlation vs causation than this.

Oscar and Frost were, arguably, the biggest reason we didn't finish top 4 in 2018 and possibly have an even better crack at the finals.

Truly, that is rubbish! We started off with Lever and Tom McD playing back in 2028 .Lever useless early on, then a bad injury as he was starting to improve. Frost only  got a game after Lever’s injury, plus the decision to play Tom forward— a pretty good decision  as it transpired. Mid season onwards ( after we were smashed by Pies on Queens Birthday) Oscar and Frost were the key backs. Have a look at our results thereafter. Look at the two MCG finals, then tell me that Oscar can’t play.

ive never seen such a set against a player, because he LOOKS, awkward, non athletic . How many times has he been beaten badly by a one on one opponent? . I ask friends why they seem to detest him and its always “ look at him— he doesn’t look like a player”

And it’s the treatment in sites such as this which has [censored] off Tom, so we are likely to lose two utterly decent guys in circumstances which won’t reflect well on the club.

We’ll trade him to his desired destination for a token late pick or he’ll get there as a delisted free agent.

Well that’s the point!!!! If all we are to get for Oscar is, eg, number 70 in the draft, are we not better to retain him? Perhaps as Rookie? How many very late draft picks turn out to be as useful as Oscar? If u disagree, have a look at the first two finals in 2018

We used to have a desire for slow midgets. It seems our focus nowadays, is to fill up with moderate B grade midfielders, with little upside, on long contracts.

I don’t think Langdon can be classified as a moderate B grade midfielder. And our recruiting this year has been OUTSTANDING . When else have we recruited three 18yos who will be gun 200 game players ? And Langdon is already a star

Yeah that’s right mate, Mahoney is a dud. Really!!!! In one year we recruit Jackson, Kosi, Rivers, Langdon and Tomlinson. Not wrapped in the latter but I regard it as the best recruiting year for a very long time . The three kids will all play 200 games , hopefully for us

Omc is a spud.  He didn’t develop and unfortunately should be delisted.

If it’s a trade , Pick 88 or similar gets it done.
Or maybe trade to Swans in pick exchange (Dees trade OMc and pick 62 for Swans pick 56).

Same trade value as Cale Morton.

Are u serious. Trade OMac for pick 88? Hardly anyone rated 70 or above gets to play a single game

Thats overs!! just leave out pick 62 and would do this in a heartbeat!

Really. In these boring times do yourself a favour and watch our two winning finals from 2018 and then tell us if Oscar, let alone Tom, should be traded .

oscar does not LOOK the part. When he first started playing I had friends who jeered him unmercifully  and often unfairly . In fact he’s a more than useful player . Good height against tall key forwards . Lovely kick. Only 24. Are you certain we will get someone more useful ? I find it interesting comparing him with Lever  who DOES look the part  but who makes howlers every game, three in a row costing immediate goals  against, from memory, Gold Coast. Who often panics and handballs to nobody. Yet because he looks ok and, let it be said, defends pretty well when he has no opponent,  no-one calls for his sacking like they do for Oscar . He’s been most unfairly treated on this site and elsewhere

aren't you a genius. first round draft picks look better than mid season draft top up players.  you need to have a 45th player on your list.  quite likely they won't make it.  we gave him a crack and he didnt make it.  we move on

Exactly!!! Take Josh Wagner. In my opinion excellent recruiting. He was overlooked in two drafts . We picked him as a mature age rookie. How many mature age rookies play as many games as he did. And he played some very good games. He was never in our best 22, nowhere near it , but he was a bloody good backup on the HBF. Our latest recruiting has made him superfluous ,he would  understand that . Anyone can select excellent kids from the first two rounds of the draft. It’s the ability to get value from the lesser known selections which demonstrates good team management

What are you on about? He was never on Collingwoods AFL list. He was recruited from their VFL team after winning back to back best and fairest.

At one stage last year he was leading the AFL competition for intercept marks.

Oscar is finished. 5 years on the list and has not improved one bit. Matter of fact he's gotten worse.

DD, being bored last night I watched the second half of both of our winning finals in 2018. I suggest you do likewise. If u do I think u may agree there is no way we should delist OMac and neither should we trade TomMac . Give them both specific targets over the summer then see what they can do in 2021

Weid was fairly solid but ma y posters have neen quite reasonable to not be happy with his last 3 to 4 games prior.

Yea delivery has not always been great but he hasnt shown a great deal of intensity. I.e his lack of tackling in those games.

He has had several very good games this year and looks like he will be somthing very special but then goes quiet for at least just as many.

I personally thonk he is a very skilled player but does he have the passion.

Hopefully he will continue to grow and become even better.

I also think he is best suited to playing at chf. He plays better when he has room to move and cant clunk as many in big packs.

He is more of an athletic forward than a stand and grab old fashioned type who use their body strength.

Some of his defensive efforts are still poor. In the first quarter he allowed Ridley to mark out on the boundary line with a very half hearted  attempt to spoil by the Weid

It was good to secure the win but I’m disappointed in Goodwin’s direction after half time. We played safe football and took no risks which was the opposite of what we did in the second qtr. We did this against Carlton in round 2 and again we almost coughed it up with this style of play. I can’t see why a simple direction of “just keep on doing what you’re doing”’ can’t be applied in these situations instead of going into this highly possessive defensive game style that doesn’t suit us.

Judging by what the players, and Goodwin himself have said, that was precisely the instruction. The teams were exhausted yesterday, again Goodwin mentioned that our blokes were b——ed in the last quarter. Percentage wasn’t an issue

Listening to Goodwin presser sums up our club

Does it?Is there anything Goodwin could say at the presser that would satisfy u?

it was a TERRIFIC interview .He mentioned undoubted strengths in the backs. Mentioned that we are still young up forward and need more - was entitled to mention that we’d jumped firm 17 to 9. Steely reserve to go ok v WC , if we get there which is hardly surprising as we’ve beaten them twice in our last 4 encounters. Talked glowingly about Tracc while mentioning the players around him.

by comparison with a Malthouse, Clarkson  or Longmire thiswas excellent  stuff

So he's a recruiter now is he?

Well Doc, he is being criticised for our recruiting of Tomlinson. I agree, it is irrational . But if he was wrong about To linson , and it’s only a partial disappointment,  Then he must get credit fot the other 4

I certainly question his playing hunt and smith in defence and melksham playing at all.

His dog like determination in persisting with tmac instead of brown. Omac at anytime.

His gameplan in windy conditions and his dear in the headlight performances on the many times we are getting smashed like the freo game.

He hasnt got shocking win/loss ratio but if we are to believe most commentators and punduts we are a good team not living up to our talent. ( ie 2018 we were one game away from a gf.)

So we either an average group of players who most of us overate or Goody is not a mastercoach.

I know Essendon are a rabble but that 2nd quarter was a hark back to the prelim finalists we were not long ago. In saying that I think a fair ammount of failure has to land on the coach and the sub coaches he surrounds himself with.

And his recruiting of Langdon, Jackson, Kosi, Rivers. No credit for that?

Want trouble any side playing finals with fade outs like that to a bottom side once again.. same old issues & Goodwin can’t fix them... our fwd structures not working & can’t take a mark vs a bottom side taking marks & scoring, Weiderman goalless 4 games in a row

U do realise this is only the 4th last quarter we have lost out of 17?

Not quite true. I generally agree with @titan_uranus on Smith in that he's not a footballer, but he actually made a number of good spoils and rebounded off his man a number of times in the first three quarters. I wouldn't have him in my team, but he probably played his best defensive game ever today.

Pre season I heard one of those discussions with Plapp and Richardson in which they mentioned Smith’s “ freakish skills”. Then, in R1 v WC he went for a couple of speckies  and allowed easy goals . I think the “ freakishness” has been drummed out of him for this year. But I would persist. He is a lovely build and I think he is learning defence. He had some good moments v Cameron last week. He’s actually played v little footy

Up there with the Goodwin 4 year signing and Tomlinson for 4 years @ $500K ?

That’s right Buzzy, have a shot at Goodwin.  If we don’t make finals we nevertheless win 9/8. Means Goody has a favourable win / loss ration three years out of 4. What were the coaching records  of Hardwick, Bomber Thompson  and even Clarkson after 4 years.

tell me  Buzzy and all you Goodwin knockers— what precisely is wrong with his  Coaching ? He  did  make one awful blunder in team selection for the Freo match but otherwise I’ve seen little wrong   And Buzzy you are not happy about Tomlinson.. I’m not excited either. But I’m VERY excited about Langdon, Jackson, Kosi and Rivers. If u want to blame Goodwin for Tomlinson how do you rate his other three selections . And I rate the fact that the players rate him

Bottom 6 holding us back, gritty win but need depth in the list to take next step.

But the bottom 6 vary from match to match.Hannan is down in form but at his best is a good player. Spargo was great v Cwood. Kosi is in a flat spot . Every team, in every match has 6 out of 22 who do not rate well. The key is that your bottom 6 should not be hopeless . By and large this year our bottom group has paid its way. I think we have considerable depth. Look at  Wagner  and  Brown. Serviceable at least
