The old straight arm block - The Gawn rule.
FireInTheBennelly replied to wrecka45's topic in Melbourne Demons
So what's the rule? Preventing the opposition ruckman from getting to the contest? Ok, so at a centre bounce, how many players are allowed to play the ball? 2 At around the ground throw-ins/ball-ups, thanks to new rules of the game, how many players are allowed to play the ball? 2 So it's pretty clear these instances are a 1 on 1 contest. So once the ball is bounced, thrown up, thrown in, or whatever, it is now a contest between 2 players. How can an umpire rule that 1 of those players is preventing the other from contesting the ball? It is in fact already a contest between the 2, it is on, it is happening, they are both there, contesting. This incorrect ruling, note, it is not in fact a rule, needs to be booted this year while, well, we suck. It cannot be allowed to interfere with our game in 2020. This needs to be addressed with the AFL immediately. If they want to change the rule to add some rubbish about a straight arm fend in a ruck contest, then so be it, all ruckmen need to be adjudicated on the same grounds, not just Max. #freeMaxy Get on board -

A mate told me that some punter had $30,000 on the Weagles to win that game. I wonder what influence that had on the umpiring? It did seem unusually fair.

I'm in the minority, but I feel sorry for them. GWS had twice as many concessions as they did, at a time that was the most crucial to their long term viability. Add to that Ablett royally screwing them over. I mean how many players that had ongoing shoulder issues and missed games constantly could end up now playing full seasons, WITHOUT ANY STRAPPING!!! He scammed that club, had no intention of playing to his best. It was a time out for him and a cash in. He messed up the culture with his religious BS as well. No wonder players wanted out. I'll get smashed for it, but I think they should get a priority pick.

Yep. I could've sworn the rule was if you're fined 3 times in a year it's an automatic suspension. Edit According to this story from 2017, it is (was) 3 fines = suspension: https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/more-news/dustin-martin-fined-twice-but-still-eligible-for-brownlow-medal-bernie-vince-cops-twomatch-ban/news-story/afe5403282bce6da1c2dc261f06727bc When did this change?

How come Grundy never gets pinged for throwing his ruck opponent out of the contest? He does it constantly and gets away with it. As soon as his opponent does it, free kick.

I can't wait for the day Salem, Melksham and Fritta are our 3 major i50 kicker innerers ?

How close is Nev to a call up? Is 1 VFL game enough? Jetta into the backline, Fritsch forward? -
Is Clayton Oliver the worst umpired footballer in the history of the game? First it was calling his lightning handballs throws, and now he's held at every contest, rarely wins a free kick. I dare say he doesn't have much chance of ever winning a Brownlow.
