Can someone with far better footy knowledge than I explain why Tomlinson keeps getting dropped.

We haven't lost a game with the May/Lever/Tomlinson combo since since September 2020 and further to that, we have a  21-4 record since round 17 2020 when Tomlinson plays in the side.

Are the above stats an anomaly and he's therefore a complete liability in the side, or is he getting harshly treated at selection?

Do I need to get over it and accept that he's a BOG ordinary footballer, not withstanding that he allows Lever to be an intercept king.

I note that his replacement for this side got towelled up by Levi Casboult of all people in his one and only appearance this year. Hopefully he makes a better fist of it this weekend.

His role allows Lever to be Lever and May to be May. The problem though is he is only ok in his direct role. He gives what he has but plays in straight lines and is reactionary so is led to the ball by his player. Turner can play the same role on more players unless they have serious bulk advantage (like Casboult did and like McKay would have). Turner same height, has speed and better natural read but is lighter. Turner has dominated at VFL level pre and post injury not just in stats but impact. In my view for the teams we are likely to play in September I would think Disco gives us more options. Granted it is a risk to bring someone new into the system this late in the year.

I seem to remember there were strong rumours last trade period that we were very close to getting a key forward. I have a feeling that may have been Jacob Koschitzke from the Hawks. He's out of contract this year and wouldn't cost us much at all. Thoughts? Only 23 years old, 1.98m.

Mitch Lewis was the one went for and didnt land,

Salem was not flash on the weekend but he’s been very good since his return.

Salem>ANB every day of the week

His last 3 weeks have been mediocre. Not comparing the two players as they play different roles and would also have different values in market. Not saying I would trade him but he is not “Heart and Soul” and is tradeable at the right price.

Excuse me.. we should never release ANB or Salem. They are needed senior players who have played well this year. There are lots of knockers around of ANB but he is the heart and soul of our Club as is Salem.

How many heart and soul players does a team have? I dont class Salem as one of them and his 2023 has been poor after a middling injury impacted 2022. We have others for the role on lesser $$$. I would not say he cant be traded at the right price.

TMac did nothing wrong on Sunday. Delivery as usual was atrocious into the forward line.

It’s hard to do anything right or wrong if you cant run to a contest or jump at the ball. There is no way he plays his week.

  6. Based on today our best options of not many is to play Tomlinson back, Smith forward and bring one of Spargo, Woey or Laurie in for Jordon. Anyone who looks at the stats and see they are led by Dunstan and Harmes need to recognise their games dont translate to anything that solves our problems at AFL level.

I think it’s fair to give credit to Smith for being part of the first quarter dam wall, but not at all fair to suggest he would have made a difference in the last quarter burst which was entirely on our midfield for letting them come out the front of stoppage far too easily.

Not giving him credit, although I would back him to contest TDK better than Lever did for goal 2. Its more so that I dont recall a single thing he did in the 20 q1 inside 50s that would support him not being a good backline option.

Smith is not reliable enough in the backline. He causes panic. We look way better when Hibbo was in there. He totally blanketed Martin.
Smith is a high impact low possession player with versatility. He’s a perfect sub.

Its interesting how we all see it differently.

We gave up 20 inside 50s in the first quarter yet a backline with Smith in it repelled them to maintain the damage to one goal.

We gave up ascendency for the first 8 minutes of the last to Carlton and they kicked 3 goals in a Smithless backline.

Martin had next to no impact prior to Hibbo's entry into the game.

Not saying Hibberd shouldnt be in the 22 but we defended much better with Smith in the back 6.

The Casey ground is exact same size of the MCG...

Acknowledged. Most of the others are smaller. Random not extensive sample below.

    MCG 171m x 146m

    Coburg 165m x 140m

    Sandringham 160m x 120m

    Punt Road 159m x 124m

    Williamstown 165m x 135m

    Preston 169m x 127m

    Footscray 161m x 123m

  10. Dunstan masses stats on smaller VFL ground that I suggest have more stoppages and less open transitional play. He is AFL standard around the stoppage offensively and defensively. Unfortunately away from the stoppage he lacks the transitional movement to defend and when he gets ball in open play lacks effectiveness by foot. Harmes has him well covered generally but most importantly can fill multiple roles. Dunstan is purely a first dibs inside mid with no further flex.

  11. The last game Petty was tried properly forward against Hawthorn when get got injured. 2 goals, 6 marks (2 contested) in 33% game time. With Tomlinson form and the lack of form from Brown surely people get this is worth another look?

  12. I would go Petty forward with Woewodin, Hibberd and McVee. I would give Sparrows midfield time to RIvers alllowing both Hibbo and Judd to play back 7. In saying this I reckon it will be Petty, Harmes, Hibberd, Woewodin with Smith again as Sub and McVee taking a well earnest rest.
