Mariafe/Clancy have put up a brave fight against the red hot Brazilian team, but have gone down in 3 sets 22-20, 15-21, 12-15. They will now play off for Bronze against a second pair from Switzerland.

Bronze to Australia in the Mens K2-500. I suspect they'll be a little disappointed not to win Gold, but a great achievement all the same.

Yes, as confirmed by Tom Green, we were a little slow out of the blocks and that was costly

But Germany looked the best crew anyway and were holding Hungary & Australia at the finish.  Bronze medal fully deserved by the Aussies

Tom Green butters up in the Kayak Single 1000m SF and (hopefully) the 1000m final tomorrow night and is a decent chance to medal

Silver medal to Madison Keeney in the 3m Springboard! Some fantastic dives for such a young girl, and it makes this game our 3rd most successful outright in terms of total medals. (Most successful through proper counting)

What a great competition the diving is!  And Maddison was fantastic in all the big moments. Finished her set with a 3.4 degree of difficulty dive (which was courageous in itself) A wonderful Silver medal performance.

And we've got Matthew Richardson striving for Gold in the Gold medal best of 3 in the Cycling Sprint later on (2.00am)

Hope to wake up tomorrow with some more Olympic good news!

The Midas touch is with you, TD!

Opals given a Basketball lesson from USA, beaten 85-64, a margin that probably flattered them a bit. Turnovers have been their biggest issues these games.

Will now take on either Belgium or France for Bronze.

Silver to Matthew Richardson in the mens sprint at the Velodrom. The Dutch opponent just too strong.

Unfortunately Mariafe/Clancy have ran out of steam and were beaten pretty comfortably 17-21, 15-21 in the Bronze Medal match. It was a great effort for them to get this far. After their first two matches, I couldn't see them getting past the Round of 16.

Stingers go down 9-11 to Spain in the Waterpolo. Amazing effort making it to the Gold medal game. We're now only 1 medal away from the magic 50!

  • Author

Spain too accomplished in the Women's Water Polo and they showed their class against a gallant Stingers team.  We took it right up to Spain but their defence was just too strong when it counted

I thought we did very to keep in touch and we were always a chance if we could stop Spain scoring.  Better team won but a fabulous Silver medal to the Aussies

Aussie Weightlifter Eileen Cikamatana is in medal contention in the 81kg class

The Opals are still a chance to medal in the Bronze match against Belgium in the Women's Basketball (7.30pm tomorrow)

Other medal chances

Jessica Hull in the 1500m later this morning (4.15am)

McKenzie Little in the Women's Javelin (3.30am tomorrow)

Men's Keirin Cycling with Matthew Richardson is a chance (tomorrow evening 7.29pm/9.23pm)

Maybe the Men's Madison (Cycling 1.50am) and the Women's Omnium (Cycling 9.56pm tomorrow)

Silver for Jess Hull in a great race for our 50th medal and our first medal on the track since London 2012.

Great effort from the Ozzie team. unbelievable medal haul.

Just watched RayGun doing her break-dancing routine. It was terrible. Eddie the Eagle level terrible.

And why is break dancing an Olympic sport anyways. I suppose we'll have ballroom dancing next

Ha ha!

When the Break Dancing is on, there's at least 10 other sports to watch at the same time. I see it as a very minor distraction

But thankfully, we won't see Break Dancing in 2028 so that might be the end of it!

My only beef with the Olympics is that because there is so much going on at the same time, I only get to see about 20% of what I want to see (live)

So I've missed 80% live and that did not include Break Dancing!

Of the newer sports, I've really enjoyed the Climbing, Skateboarding and the Surfing

Never been a fan of Judo, Taekwondo or the Wrestling

Some Silver medals are worth more than others?  Track & Field medals are so hard to win that even a Bronze seems like a monumental achievement (imagine if Rohan Browning had won the Bronze medal in the 100m Sprint!)

Jessica Hull put in a grand performance!

As for today and this evening ...

The Opals play for Bronze against Belgium at 7.30pm

Matthew Glaetzer & Matthew Richardson are right in the mix for Men's Cycling Keirin (7.29pm, 9.23pm) ... but the Keirin can be a roughhouse affair so there's a reasonable amount luck involved

Georgia Baker is an outside hope in the Cycling Women's Omnium

Other highlights this evening include ...

Women's Marathon (4pm)

Women's Volleyball Gold Medal Match (9.00pm)

Men's Handball Gold Medal Match (9.30pm)

Men's Water Polo Gold Medal Match (10.00pm)

Women's Basketball Gold Medal Match (11.30pm)

Half time in the Opals/Belgium Bronze medal match and there's nothing between the 2 teams.  Opals lead 37-36 but we'll need to be at our best to win

And Matt Glaetzer & Matt Richardson are both through to the Keirin Semifinals after both rode very well in their Quarterfinals

Edit: Both Glaetzer & Richardson both through to the final in the Keirin after finishing 2nd & 1st in their respective Semifinals!  ... Final is at 9.23pm

And the Opals secure the Bronze after a battle royalè against Belgium!! First Aussie medal for 12 years in Women's Basketball

30 points for Ezi Magbegor in a stellar performance!

And Georgia Baker of Australia is in the Silver medal position after 3 of 4 points races in the Women's Cycling Omnium ... Final is at 9.56pm

Silver & Bronze for Australia in the Men's Cycling Keirin!  The Netherlands Harrie Lavreyson just too good and too fast to win his 3rd Gold in these games

Matty Richardson rode his heart out for Silver whilst Glaetzer rode his luck to attain the Bronze medal

Well done, lads!  Kudos

So that's 3 medals on the last day for the Aussies and hopefully another medal of some sort of colour with Georgia Baker in the Women's Omnium Cycling ( Georgia is currently 2nd after 3 of 4 races)  That Final points Race is on at 9.56pm.  Go Georgia!!

So satisfying to see the Opals secure a Bronze Medal in such a tight match. Great come back after their campaign got off to such a shocking start. Was also great to see Jess (maiden name) Trengove come 13th in the Marathon and even lead it at the half way point.

Has been a shame we've dropped to 4th on the medal table, however zero gold in the last 4 days while Japan have picked up 8 has been the reason for that. We've still performed remarkably though, our most successful games ever and 2nd most successful in terms of total medals, behind only Sydney.

As @BDA says, I found the very brief moment of breaking I watched hard to digest, and feel it has no place in the Olympics. Thankfully it will be a one and done it seems with LA not picking it up. Instead we'll see T20 cricket & Lacros (both back after more than 100 years). Baseball and Softball will return after stop start histories since coming in at Atlanta 96', while Squash and Flag Football will also make their debuts. Along with breaking, it sounds like Boxing might also be on the chopping block...

Well said and it should be noted that Japan won 7 Wrestling Gold medals & 3 Judo Gold medals and god forbid, 1 Break Dancing Gold!  So make of that what you will

And the USA need 1 more Gold medal to top the table over China ... and there's only 1 more Gold medal up for grabs - USA vs France in Women's Basketball (11.30pm tonight)

I like all the 6 new or renewed sports returning to the LA Olympics.  t20 cricket, Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball, Squash and Flag Football ... are all worthy of inclusion.  Boxing?  I'd like to see it stay but as you noted, TD, Boxing may miss out for a variety of reasons

Our most successful games ever but it would have been great to reach 20 Gold medals.  20+ for Los Angeles?  Gives us something to strive for

I'm sleep deprived but the Paris version of the Olympic games has been fantastic.  The comraderie amongst all the athletes was wonderful to see.  All the Nations competing hard but no bad losers and all the sports were primarily played in the right spirits

Having attended the Sydney Olympics that was what stood out to me during that time.  No aggro, just keenly contested sport

And I went to close on 25 events in Sydney, all thoroughly enjoyable experiences (Kathy Freeman win included)

I intend to be at the Brisbane Olympics to experience it all again

I urge others to do the same, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity (well, twice for my good self!)

Thanks for your contributions to the thread, TD.  Your summaries have once again been spot on

Last event on now ... USA vs France in the Women's Basketball

Thanks Macca. Have really appreciated your contributions, starting the thread and daily breakdowns of what was ahead and Aussies in action. I look forward to watching the closing ceremony in a few hours and then giving my final thoughts on everything this Olympics.

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
