Angus Brayshaw Forced into Retirement

Sorry to open old wounds, I miss Gus on field and on the list. But I have a curiosity regarding paying brayshaws contract off.. given there’s cap relief by percentage in the next couple years for it, is it allowed to be shifted into larger amounts over those years? Say 2026 1m, ‘27 1m and then 400k in the final year where there’s no cap relief?

Seems like an obvious cheat to the system but I would figure many long term contracts are amended over their course so why not here?

(Apologies if this has been answered already)

I'm not full bottle on this but I'll have a go. I know that Nathan Murphy was contracted to the end of last year but his full salary was paid out before, or close to, the start of the 2024 season. His salary would still have been included in the Pies 2024 salary cap.

Gus is contracted until the end of 2028. Even though he is not playing I would think the MFC could change the terms of his contract provided he was still paid the same total amount over the remaining three years.

BTW I was told by a family friend of Gus that he and his bride are moving to the UK (not sure short term or long term).

@M_9, Gus moved to Oxford a good while ago to complete an MBA. Oxford and Cambridge are a beautiful part of England, rich in history yet so close to London. Oxford, Cambridge and London are called "The Golden Triangle" because the incredible wealth within this region.

Now there are two sides to every story and I'm hearing this from a player perspective, not Zurich's. So please keep that perspective with the following.

Zurich is facing a multi-million payout and, typical for an insurance company which has investors and shareholders, is dotting every "i" and crossing every "t".

Zurich believe the speech Gus gave at 2024 Brownlow was so powerful and given so well, it is clear evidence a large payout is not required. It is perceived undercover personnel, hired by Zurich, had been following Gus relentlessly, constantly filming and taking pictures whenever he was out of the house. Gus found this intense scrutiny suffocating and mentally unhealthy. Regarding the scrutiny, he's not receiving assistance from the AFL or MFC which have completed their required payouts.

Thus, the move to Oxford.

As far as I'm aware, Zurich has still not paid out.

Zurich haven't paid out. I'm mates with Nate Murphy's dad. Both Gus and Nate paid Zurich a motza in insurance premiums (tens of $1000's). Zurich are similarly drilling down on Nate's medical history - going right back to his U12 days.

Nate has ongoing issues. He can't handle loud noise and has frequent headaches. He is employed by the Pies and loves it. BTW Nate reckons Jared Rivers is close to, if not the best, coach he's had.

I can well understand Gus 'escaping'.

Insurers are expert with the 3 D's policy, deny, delay and defer.

Jon Ralph touched on this in his article today - he just reiterated that under AFL rules, there is a 90% cap exemption in the year after he is medically retired - then 75% in year 2 and 50% in year 3...I think this (i.e. the salary cap effect) would have been sorted out when Angus got paid out by the Club.

Stasi [censored]. What absolute dogs.

Picturing Angus and his lovely in Oxford makes me quite happy. But the reason I brought anything up was in relation to the contracts thread on here. Is there any confirmation that Gus’ payout is inside or outside the cap for the remaining years? I gather it will be hard to obtain exact numbers (as it will for clarry too). I’m just hoping it doesn’t restrict us when trying to retain our next batch of core players in the years to come.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
