I sense and have had the thought for some years, and because of our perennial low ladder positions of yesteryear, and a dash of Mfcss... that when we get to having a strong list,  is that we all over-estimate our list of that time,  and we ease off the further building,  looking to go all in...  and that we look to top-up players to fill a niche.

I think the overestimation comes from us swinging from Mfcss,  straight over to Cockiness.  A coolish arrogance.

 

Lets try,  when we think the list is good enough,  think again instead,  that when we think it IS,  then we need more talent.

    I reckon we missed our real chances in 90 and 98. Both premierships were won by teams that played well at the right time, and teams that were not really any better than the others in the finals - unlike the teams we run into in 88 and 00, which were powerhouses.

    98 we missed our chance with really poor kicking for goal in the prelim final against north - who were the best team that year, and in 90 we were the best team for the first half of the year, but then had the typical MFC slump and had to win the last game to make the finals (finishing fourth on the same number of wins as the teams above us). We were probably still a chance  to go all the way before taking west coast too easy (IMO) in the first semi.

    In truth the club was back in power in footy,  from end of Barassi's reign,  right through till the end of Daniher's time.

     

    There were plenty of opportunities,  and the club wasn't quite good enough in itself.  It's not players who win premierships.  It's 'Clubs',  that win them.  Everyone within the club has an impact on the teams outcomes.

    We have never really got the club back to that position again,  it was at its best from 1985 through til maybe 1995.  And the slip had started, IMO.  Slowly slowly declining.   Until we hit the mid noughties, and the list was stuffed.

    I actually think we sealed a finals birth the week before against Richmond at Waverley.

    We played Hawthorn in the final round of 1990 and we were playing for second spot on the proviso that West Coast lost to Geelong at Kardina Park and Collingwood lost to North at Waverley. Alas West Coast came from behind to beat Geelong while the Pies won by about 90 points.

    I wonder how the 1990 finals series would have gone had Geelong held on against West Coast in round 22 and we subsequently finished third and played Collingwood at Waverley and got the double chance?

    It should be noted thought that we conceded 31 goals to North and lost to a pathetic Sydney (5-17) that year, and great sides wouldn’t have allowed that.

Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

    • REPORT: North Melbourne

      I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

    • CASEY: Werribee

      The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.

      The Demons are finally back at the MCG and finally back on the winners list as they continually chipped away at a spirited Kangaroos side eventually breaking their backs and opening the floodgates to run out winners by 6 goals.
