Sandringham Practice Match v Bendigo Bombers

Featured Replies

Garland was 37, Petterd 27, Neville 10, Newton 28 and Dutchy 24.

Thanks for that.

I had no trouble with Holland (hard to miss) and Newton who is fairly different looking. Garland I cottoned onto fairly early, but the others I just couldn't get a bead on. Although from memory I did see Neville go in hard at one stage and thought, "that number 10 has guts." In future I'll be more prepared...

did sandy make any *mod edit* effort to secure Read or anyone?!

Yeah, they did with read but he is suspended for the first 4,5? games already and he told the club that he is going overseas in the middle of they year for a substantial time so therefore his services would be very limited. Maybe to only about 6-8 games with no injuries or other suspensions. This means that Sandy would have to fork out alot of money for what could potentially be no much game time as i would have thought Read would have asked for a signing price and then match payments on top.

Perhaps this has changed or perhaps Geelong are willing to pay out the money in hope that is all good come finals time and they can give the premiership a nudge.

Paul Wheatley - apparently his first game for the year - looked a bit rusty but was getting into the game late in the second quarter.

Colin Garland - very impressive up forward, led and marked well and yes - he has an ordinary kicking style but it's effective.

Wheatley will fight back into the 22 some time this year as i think Holland may go down hill from last year. Would love to see him back. As for Garland, i couldnt care less about how he kicks...as long as its effective. For all i care he could skip, jump, sit down and walk (in that order) as a kicking motion (that would be really funny). The effectiveness of the kick is what matters not the style

Thanks for the feedback Occo.

Personally, I thought that saying something like "yes - he has an ordinary kicking style but it's effective" summed up the situation pretty well but next time I report on Garland I'll look very closely at how he skips, sits down, jumps and walks.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
