Practice Match

Which gates are open?

dont know. prob gate 5 or whichever gate is under the tv

Has anybody worked out the difference between a "match simulation session" and a "practice match" and what's it going to be on Tuesday at Tesltra Dome?

I also watched the game. I really only followed the progress of our younger players.

Buckley looked good. Tougher over the ball than I remember last year. He's quick and powerful, just needs to learn to find the footy in space to utilise his lovely kicking and speed. The tight contested game style the other day didnt really suit him. Im of the opinion that the higher level of play in the AFL seniors may suit him best. Would be perfect for the Doggies.

Jones ran with McLean and shaded him in my eyes. Clean in the contests, attacked the footy with venom and ran hard to get to multiple contests. His kicking was pretty good and his decision making was usually spot on. He looked lean for someone of his build meaning that the nickname chunky can still be applied.

McLean was good. Great vision a couple of times and managed to find space a few times to set up forward thrusts. The most vocal player on the field. He looks in incredible shape. His workrate is sickening to watch.

Miller looked great in the warmup but didnt impact much in the game. If he got the ball handballed to him he panicked. he needs to simplify his game a bit. There is too much going on in his head.

Frawley......... the most excited I have being about a 1st year player in a long time. For the 10 minutes he played he looked composed, agile, smart and ridiculously fast for a 192cm player. His run down the wing was....... brilliant. If he can have the same attitude in the big stuff then he will eventually be a valuable contributor to our side. His conesting skills were surprisingly good.

PJ. cant ruck. end of story. As a forward he looks nice on the lead but looked lost once the ball was on the deck. I still dont know where he fits.

Col signs a mean autograph and stretches like a champ.

Dunn moved around beautifully. Looks thicker in the legs but no where else. I thought he beat Bell and looks very confident. He is a player that we need to keep in the side, he showed that touch of class that we lack in some of our talls.

Pettard took a nice high mark and showed poise, some pace and a nice kick. I think he has a bit of an xfactor that players like Bell seem to be lacking. He will play this year.

Chris Johnson was very classy. Directed traffic and was generally very vocal. Kicking is nice and he looks to have gained a yard in pace. The kid just knows how to play (my favorite trait). Looks set for a big year.

Garland needs to fill out and learn a position. He showed nice athleticsim at times but was really a total non factor. Doesnt look 192cm, looks or at least plays shorter.

Bell.... same ol story. some strong defensive plays mixed with mental errors. He is a lovely kick at times.

Moloney was great. He had a few runs, kicked with great penetration and looked generally menacing around the packs. Has lost some weight and looks very good. He looked pretty hungry on the field and really got back to being the 90m player that he was in 05.

Neville played..... never seen him play before. cant say i remember him doing much. he is skinny still.

Riv. The best tall defender by a suburb or 2. his disposal was great and i cant remember him being outmarked. ALways brought the ball to ground if he couldnt mark it himself. I dont think he likes the new in the back rule.

Weetra. He is fast. Skills are ok. Looked comfortable on the field.

Newton.... got an awesome spray from Greeny for kickign for goal from a ridiculous position. He is like the kid at school who takes awesome pack marks in kick to kick and drills bananas for goals from the boundary only to come up empty in a game situation. If he new how to play he would be lethal. I dont think he does though.

Warnock.... beaten by all of his opponents.

Neaves. looked big and strong but still athletic. Def more athletic than PJ or Jamar. smarter than both as well. i thought he moved very well and looks to have made a few steps forward this offseason.

Others to be noticed:

Ward. Same ol story....... runs sideways, loses his opponent, terrible disposal and tries very hard....

Bizz. will have the same problems he had last year. too slow and teams wont allow him the freedom ha had today in accumalating possessions.

White. Still not a forward.

Robbo. Has lost weight it seems. mostly from his rump. moved very well.

Whelan> best small defender by a looooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg way.

Thanks for the detailed report. Nicely done.

May I ask who were Warnock's opponents? I had high hopes for him, but it seems that from all reports on Frawley, competition for backline spots is becoming more and more intense.

Great luxury to have though. Good defences win finals!

Good report tigger.

This quote caught my eye though. Neaves more athletic than PJ? I don't think there are many players the size of PJ who are more athletic.

PJ's quick for his size in a straight line but he has a big turning circle. Josh Fraser made him look like the Queen Mary two QBW ago right in front of me.

i think in a straight line PJ is quick. He isnt particularly agile nor is his vertical very impressive.

Neaves seems to have a nicer combination of those three physical traits.

Warnock... cannot for the life of me remember who he was on. Just remember him getting beaten regularly.

Turning circle is one element of athleticism and PJ may not have the greatest turning circle, but there are other elements like ability to get down low, trap the ball below the knees and general co-ordination when moving around. PJ is very good at these aspects. His big man skills let him down and this may be the reason he won't make it.

Visit 'ology. Apparently it's a closed session.

since it is a closed session, what do you think is the chance of getting any kind of review of the practice match? maybe CAC would indulge us with how he thought the hitout went?

No. It was open to the public. I went and will try and make some comments when I have more time.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
