The slight cynic in me thinks some just like bagging players. Lewis was on a hiding to nothing with that play - he probably took the view that it was moving away from him too quickly, he was surrounded by opposition, and the ball was slippery, therefore his situational awareness (and significant experience in the game) told him not to bother. It’s unfortunate that two of them resulted in turnovers (a mark at half back and a kicking in danger free), but there’s a big likelihood the alternative result wouldn’t have been any better. It’s easy to criticise the player for what actually happened when you get to invent the counterfactual, rather than the player who would be held responsible for it.

It’s a bit like those criticisms of Lewis over that “shepherd” that he didn’t lay. The word the umpires use for that type of shepherd is “BLOCK!”, preceded by a whistle and a point in the opposition’s direction. But again, we want to bag Lewis and we get to invent the counterfactual, so let’s run with it instead.

I agree with this. I must say I have been waiting for the turning of the tide with the anti Lewis posts after this game. It is so predictable that the negative comments begin and then the bandwagon uses every possible negative interpretation of incidents. Most fair minded posters accept that there is room for differences in views, but after a while the criticism goes beyond a fair variance of opinion.

I'm not usually one to bag players for no reason I just noted that he opted to hack it out of midair on 3 occasions - he was pinged for in danger the last time and I thought he was pretty lucky not to get done for it earlier.

I accept he may have been going the percentage play (I even said as much in my previous post) but I did note that it stood out especially considering he kicked it out of midair rather than off the ground.

Wait, did Lewis seriously cop a fine for that "bump" on Walters at the end of the game? Jesus Christ this sport is gone to the dogs.

Vanders = war machine!!! Bring him in!

I was really happy for Stretch. Had a good rebound game.

Hopefully he can keep steadily improving.

Did anyonr hear footballs coming home...... just saying!

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
