Yet we take Spargo with a top 30 pick, a slow midget with no tricks. Not saying Miers is the answer to all our problems, but there have been some bizarre selections over the past couple of drafts.

I bet you weren’t saying the same thing late last year

Spargo really was a strange pick. I'm sure they preferred him over someone like Miers as he was also a midfielder in his underage years. The trouble is, Spargo will never be a midfielder at AFL level. This might seem strange as he played some solid games last year, but these small players so often come in and have promising first seasons and then don't show much improvement. Our very own JKH is a prime example of this. I know a lot of people on here rate Spargo quite highly, where do those people see him playing throughout his career?

The more I look deeper into our recruitment the more I question it, which is strange because at the same time I think we are very well placed for the future. I just think with everything we have had at our disposal we could be even better now with better recruitment and list management decisions (and I see them very much as the same thing, so the we wouldn't have drafted Josh Kelly doesn't really work, thats a cross against Jason Taylor for not identifying his elite talent).

Another one missed. Add Charlie Constable.

Miers was predicted as a 20-30 draftee. Went # 57

Constable was predicted as a 15-20 draftee. Went # 36.

Hardly a surprise that both are very good players.

A modern problem with recruiters, both are players.

Constable is a classic case of a mid who knows how to find the pill, but the knock on him was his lack of pace. They focused on what he couldn't do rather on his ball winning assets.

I rate Spargo who IMO has a good footy brain. He would have looked decent round 1 and 2 in that Cats forward line

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #42 Aidan Johnson

The VFL premiership player was recruited from Werribee to alleviate Melbourne’s forward line woes and give a chop out in the ruck, but he managed only five senior matches in his first season at the club. At times, he was a dominant force at VFL level.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #44 Luker Kentfield

An exciting young key forward, Kentfield was selected in the 2024 mid-season draft but has yet to make his AFL debut. He was sidelined by a severe bout of pneumonia over the summer, which consequently limited his pre-season. Upon his return a month into the season, he commenced in defence but ultimately impressed with his progress at Casey, particularly in the latter part of the season as a strong marking goal kicking forward.

  • AFLW REPORT: West Coast

Melbourne’s response to last week’s heartbreak was emphatic, as the Demons delivered a statement win over West Coast at a windswept Casey Fields. All of the pre-match hype surrounded the coach’s box matchup of Mick Stinear up against his apprentice, Daisy Pearce along with the gloomy weather forecast. In the end, it was less about tactical chess and more about Melbourne’s relentless execution. With rain looming, the DeeArmy and early birds snapped up the best undercover viewing spots.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.
