Our Mel addressed a breakfast for International Women’s Day today as part of a panel on the theme The Media – Women’s Friend or Foe?

In front of a packed audience at Box Hill Town Hall she spoke eloquently with conviction,  passion and excitement.

An asset to the Mighty Dees

We seem to have acquired a few really good speakers with clear thoughts and confidence to step forward.

Thinking Daisy, Mel and O'Dea off the top of my head, have all shown themselves quite eloquent.

It'll be interesting to see if they get media gigs during the main season, Daisy in particular is already clearly an asset for any commentary team.

And kind of funny and awkward, let's say Daisy gets a three-game special comments deal with foxtel, she'll likely get paid more than for the entire women's football actual season.

Mel is wonderful speaker and incredibly passionate about the game. Great to listen to her.

The Hickey family name is massive around Mildura with her dad being a star years before and his cousin Tony winning about half a dozen league B&Fs up here (or something ridiculous like that) and still playing first division cricket.

I never met Mel personally but she has been back up in the bush a few times working with the new women's league that started up last year. I only hear great things about her so she's clearly another astute pick up by the dees.

Hopefully we get a few more years out of her running around in the red and blue

I briefly heard Mel commentating on a game this weekend (Carlton v WB I think) and she was great, bringing some inside word on the players.

Also humour, in particular when they were talking about a player who had been forced to choose between footy and equestrian, to which Mel quipped, "You call that a choice?"

Glad to have her in the red and blue.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

The Demons are set to embark on a four-week road trip that takes them across the country, with two games in Adelaide and a clash on the Gold Coast, broken up by a mid-season bye. Next up is a meeting with the inconsistent Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
