Round 1 2017 v bombers?

In a word DOGPOO!  who gives a fat fats knackersack about the drug cheats.  They still have Anzac Day, and should be told to [censored] off for a Friday night game in opening round.  I am sick of the media and AFL swooning fawning all about this club, they are the most arrogant and self entitled bunch of snakes in the competition.

The talk was that Essendon would get more Friday night games, not just the season opening round. The AFL want to maximise cash and they draw much better TV audiences than we, or a lot of other clubs do, the AFL hasn't been about fairness for a long time.

We are regarded by the AFL as a filler club and they would be happy for us to circulate around the 5th to 10th spot but never take the limelight away from the glamour Victorian clubs and the NSW teams. The only way we will get to be a glamour club is to have a membership of 60,000 to 70,000 and sustained success, look at Hawthorn, they have had so much success over the last 3 decades and kids that grew up in the Brereton era and started supporting them are now adults with kids of their own. If we win a flag and play in finals for a few years then fall away again we will be back where we are now.

Personally I hate Friday night games but they certainly bring in the cash and sponsors and if we get enough cash we might find a permanent home like all the other clubs have, that might help.

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
