Hate this saying but we are four rounds in...and yep we have a decent sample size!  :pj:Ok PJ wipe that smile off yer face man i get it!

Anyways after the completion of Rnd 4 here's my top 10 based on a weighted average of select publicly available stats. The number in brackets is the weighted score of those averages. Only players who have an average (ie., 2 or more games played so far) are included in the rankings.

1. Vince (4.33)

2. Viney (4.26)

3. The Jones Boy (4.13)

4. Tyson (4.02)

5. Hogan (3.39)

6. Oliver (3.34)

7. M Jones (3.31)

8. Dunn (3.26)

9. Kennedy (3.20)

10. Bugg (3.04)

Some other noteworthy points.

In the match against Norf they averaged (per player) 88 more games and 4 years seniority on us. Not a bad effort as most times a team would get smashed in that scenario.

In yesterday's match against the Pies they had approx 30 more games per player on us and 1 year.

In all matches so far our opponents have had a higher games/years average per player!

Going ok. Now for 2 in a row! Fingers/toes/trident crossed

I would expect that to continue and the only team I expect to play a younger less experienced team than us is the lions. We will be close with a few but I doubt we will be older.

Stat update after last night.......

  • Kicking efficiency last night was around AFL average @ approx 63% which is great to see
  • We are the most accurate team in front of goal at 65.5% accuracy. Next best is the Saints @ 61.2% and Norf @ 61.9%. The bottom 5 are The Power 50%, Essendrug 48.5%, The Blues 45.8%, the Lions 43.8% and the Dockers @ 43.1% (who would have thought!?).
  • We have the 4th highest goal kicking average in the league
  • In one of the few publicly available stats that i think is worth looking at, we are ranked 5th in clearances behind the Crows, Hawks, Swans and the Doggies. Saints are right on our tail at 6th so we'll need to work extra hard next week at the coal face to get 3 in a row.
  • We are 3rd in contested marks only behind the Weagles & Swans.

Top 5 rated players from a weighted average of stats last night were (weighted score in parentheses).....

1. Tyson (5.65)

2. Viney (5.60)

3. Jones (4.35)

4. Salem (4.25)

5. Gawn (4.20)*

*Does not include a 'hit outs to advantage' stat which would more than likely boost him to No.1 spot last night.

Top 5 up to and including round 5*

1. Viney (4.53)

2. Tyson (4.35)

3. Vince (4.23)

4. N Jones (4.17)

5. Dunn (3.38)

* Again i think Gawn would easily be in the top 2 or 3 if the hit outs to advantage could be accounted for

Where has Max Gawn?  Probably at least as influential as your first three

Yes it's flawed with regard to ruckmen Mono. He would be right up there otherwise. See latest ranking notes.

Finally managed to do a major overall of Rounds 6, 7 and 8 that i missed when i was OS. The following comparative rankings include all players who have played 2 or more games this year. And before anyone hammers me on Big Maxy, i don't have access to the 'hit outs to advantage stat' which would no doubt push Maxy into the top 5 or therabouts (just my view) if i could somehow account for it. This is not intended to be a slight on anyone, especially Big M, who is no doubt one of the major keys to our improvement since his break out match against the Cats last year.

I have included the top 22 as i figure we need the best possible (stat based) 'fielded team' of 22 as a highlight, rather than the entire list that has played 2 or more matches (32) so far. And yes, believe it or not Jeffy misses the cut at 27! And yes i realise it would be highly unlikely he would miss the actual 22 in reality (edit: although after this week's match i'm not so sure ). Although having said that he does go missing at times during some matches so maybe the stats are also giving a rough indicator of this factor (edit: on reflection this was spot on....yesterdays game blah).

The biggest (but nonetheless pleasing) surprise for me was where Billy, Harmes and Tracc are sitting. Young fellas on the rise!

Top 22 rated players from a weighted average of stats up to & inclusive of Rnd 11, 2016 (weighted score in parentheses)

1. N Jones (4.54)

2. J Viney (4.29)

3. D Tyson (4.18)

4. B Vince (4.06)

5. B Stretch (3.73)

6. T Bugg (3.34)

7. C Oliver (3.29)

8. M Jones (3.21)

9. C Petracca (3.16)

10. T McDonald (3.14)

11. J Watts (3.07)

12. J Hogan (3.05)

13. C Salem (2.98)

14. B Kennedy (2.940)

15. L  Dunn (2.938)

16. N Jetta (2.89)

17. J Harmes (2.88)

18. B Newton (2.80)

19. J Wagner (2.76)

20. H Lumumba (2.75)

21. C Pedersen (2.65)

22. D Kent (2.48)

Used the Lions game stats for the Bulldogs match yikes! Fixed. Updated to include yesterday's game against the Hawks. A slight tweak to increase the impact the effect of clangers on the overall weighting to account for concrete hands of Dawes ...Jkg! ^_^

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
