Vietnam’s horrific legacy: The children of Agent Orange

FORTY years after the end of the Vietnam War, this is a country which should be rising back to its feet.

Instead it is crippled by the effects of Agent Orange, a chemical sprayed during combat, stripping leaves off trees to remove enemy cover.

Its contaminant, dioxin — now regarded as one of the most toxic chemicals known to man — remains in Vietnam’s ecosystem, in the soil and in the fish people eat from rivers.

Nearly 4.8 million Vietnamese people have been exposed, causing 400,000 deaths; the associated illnesses include cancers, birth defects, skin disorders, auto-immune diseases, liver disorders, psychosocial effects, neurological defects and gastrointestinal diseases.

According to the Red Cross of Vietnam, up to one million people are currently disabled or have health problems due to Agent Orange, 100,000 of which are children.

In Ho Chi Minh City’s Go Vap orphanage, five-month-old Hong gazes serenely from her metal-barred cot, empty, save for a soft yellow teddy bear watching over her......... From her head grows a huge veiny mass — a rare neural tube defect known as encephalocele, which research suggests could be caused by Agent Orange exposure.

Without successful surgery, Hong’s future is bleak. She could suffer from paralysis of the limbs, vision impairment, mental disability and seizures.

This criminal war was started on a lie as well. The Gulf of Tonkin attack on US warships never even happened. Rich powerful families making money. Still happening today.

As an ally of the United States and with its own interest in seeing the South-East Asian region free of communism, Australia was an enthusiastic supporter of American policy in Vietnam.

hiho, all the way with LBJ !! harold holt & lyndon bain johnson

Mr Harold Holt with President Lyndon Baines Johnson during the latter’s visit to Canberra on 21 October 1966. ‘All the way with LBJ’ had been President Johnson’s election slogan, and Harold Holt’s use of the phrase during his visit to Washington in June 1966, created controversy in Australia.

America’s fear of a North Vietnamese victory and its implications for regional politics led to its involvement in the war in Vietnam as an ally and supporter of the anti-communist South Vietnamese regime. Australia quickly followed suit, offering military trainers to assist South Vietnamese forces in a move aimed at supporting United States policy and addressing Australia’s own regional concerns.

Over the following years both the United States and Australia increased their commitment to South Vietnam, including the use of conscripts in combat. Military might was not, however, sufficient to prevail over either southern communist insurgents nor the North Vietnamese Army.

war what is it good for: unless its genuine self defence. getting in the first hit 'disqualifies one', from the self defence angle.

Oh can I also add I forgot the behaviour of the US in Central America and South America. You know the USA support for a gallery of blood stained tyrants in Central America and their murder and oppression of local peasants. Then there was the Chile coup, the murder of Allende and the rise of Pinochet. But then how much blood must be spilt to maintain a free market economy? Megalitres of blood it seems as long as it is not American blood.

Ah yes I had forgotten about the Sandanistas versus Ronald Reagon's freedom fighting Contras. You know the Contras the US funded blood stained thugs, press ganging young kids to do their fighting, to oppress local villages, torture and exterminate opponents while the the main US guys ran their drug deals to fund arm movements in the region. Such as Oliver North who is these days a hero of the right!

Not sure if you saw 4 Corners a couple of weeks ago Earl, but the US Government is still up to the same old tricks, in this instance arming the Sinaloa cartel in the Mexican drug wars.

Over a period of about 18 months, the US watched as gun runners took about 2500 firearms bought in Arizona south of the border - some of these guns were later proven to be involved in the killing of innocent people and US border officials, never mind the gang vs gang wars.

When Congress began to investigate after whistleblowers lifted the lid on it, the Dept of Justice closed the case down just as a key player was about to testify. The reason they cited: National Security.

It was a good program, a BBC doco I think - well worth watching if it's still online.

??? some will never be rounded up, by the people; but IMO, Kama will catchup with any who are not good souls... whether that be God, the Creator, Rainbow Serpent, Allah, Hindi, Buddha, or whatever name given to the creator of life.

i believe no amount of hail Mary's will ever cover for bad deeds done against loosely, the commandments. greedy self-interest, over the well-being needs of others will never be tolerated, IMO.

http://www.theage.com.au/world/us-police-killing-citizens-at-rate-of-more-than-two-a-day-report-20150531-ghdnf0.html US police killing citizens at rate of more than two a day: report

May 31, 2015 - 7:05PM

US police have killed people at a rate of more than two a day this year, The Washington Post reports.

The newspaper is tracking such killings across America because local police departments are not required to file reports to the US government, meaning that nationwide statistics are incomplete or unavailable.

The Post found so far this year, at least 385 people have been shot and killed by police across the United States - a rate of more than two a day.

The rate is far higher than that tallied over the past decade by the government, which must rely on partial data because of the voluntary reporting requirements.

The Post found many of the killings stemmed from minor interactions between police and community members that escalated into sudden violence.

In one case, for instance, police in the Florida city of Miami Gardens, killed a schizophrenic man who was waving a broomstick. His mother had called police because she couldn't persuade him to come in from the cold.

Still, the Post noted, most of those killed this year were armed with potentially lethal objects - mainly guns, but also knives and other items.

The Post found overall, blacks were killed at three times the rate of whites or other minorities in the police killings it analysed.

One of the most prominent recent cases is that of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old who was fatally shot last year in Ferguson, Missouri. The death and subsequent lack of legal action against the police officer who shot him prompted widespread riots in the St Louis suburb.

In Baltimore last month, riots broke out following protests over the death of Freddie Gray, 25, who died from injuries sustained in the back of a police van.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
