The Bigger Picture

Besides all onfield problems, one of the biggest issues the club will endure is the loss of supporters and members.

They are leaving in droves, the kids don't want to go to see their team get smashed and look hopeless.

All these kids will loose interest in the footy club or they will end up following another team.

The last 7 or so years will impact the club for decades.

Unless they turn it around pretty soon and I'm talking by end of season.

If this continues in to next season there won't even be a cheer squad, was hardly one there today.

How many people will really not come back when we're winning again? I understand people wanting to be a part of winning groups. It's human nature. But when we get back out of the wilderness, it'll be someone else's turn to be shite. So 99% of our fairweather fans will come back, and we'll get the bandwagoners of other clubs too.

Correct. If we win games it won't be an issue

I disagree Chook. I gre up when the Demons were the dominant team. They were THE club to support. Every 3rd kid at school was a melbourne supporter. Then followed decades of the doldrums right through to the late 80s. How many melbourne supporters are there now as a percentage of young footy fans under 40? The OP is on the money. Long periods of success or failure DEFINTELY have an effect on supporter numbers. How many kids born or raised in the last 10 years will be melbourne supporters? in 20yrs time these kids will be the bread and butter of club memberships. the generation of the 50/60s, by which we are well and truly the largest membership group the club has, will be gone. Sustained success or sustained fauilure has massive ramifications on a clubs supporter base.

As an example, I can be sure that Hawthorn and Essendon are represented pretty heavily in the 30-40 yr age bracket. the 80s were good to them. And only now, the fruits of the Kangaroos 90's will start to come through. There is no greater peer pressure than in the school yard. How many kids are wearing demons jumpers to footy practice these days do you think?!

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
