Oh, but they will ! They will heavily front load all of Scully, Davis, Palmer and Ward's contracts next year (ref: see Scully's $2m first year and subsequent $800K every year after contract). The 2 year poach initiative allows a poaching attack strategy, so that they can aim for what they want (ie. another star), front load them in subsequent first two years (salary cap remains unchanged for them first two years), before their salary cap gets wound back over following years.

The more I look at it, it's smart and genius strategy and the guys mentioned would be close to prime in year 3 of GWS. As much as I hate them... . That's why Gubby Allen was selected by the AFL.

edit: Guys like Brogan, Cornes, Power, McDonald will be on ~200-$250K per year (which they would think would be great with also the promise of a coaching gig post play) and the youngsters would be on chicken feed. Next year's recruits will give better balance in 2013 and they can discard these assistant coaches where applicable, and the club sets sail. The youngsters will have a year under their belt with experience and ready to go in 2013.

By then these retirees will be fulltime assistant coaches or retired from the game. They will still have room to move. They'll sign the youngsters accordingly - but most won't be on large sizeable contracts in their second contract. A few might be rewarded accordingly early to keep away raiders, but by then the four current uncontracted just signed, having been heavily front loaded will be manageable still with reduced components (staggered). GWS will still have a much greater salary cap in year 3 and 4 compared to existing clubs. Thereafter the ones who have signed for four years (Davis, Palmer ?) will be ready to sign again - and they may or may not be on reduced contracts from their current windfall.

Also, no cap on coaches.

If the agreement involves shifting from playing to coaching, the player coaches can have heavily backended contracts, giving them the bulk of their pay once their salary is outside the cap.

It's probably been happening for a decade, though.

Here's hoping BP, TH & co are devising genius ways of circumventing trading strategies for the upcoming trade week so we get a win-win-win scenario. Ditto for the new coach committee in their quest.
