Thoughts on AFLPA demands?

In particular, the rookie list thing. Wondering what people's thoughts are?

Since we've done so well off our rookies lately, with Jurrah, McKenzie and now possibly both Evans and Nicholson, what do you think about the AFLPA demanding as part of the contract that rookie lists be removed and turned into an extended main list?

Personally, I'm not sure. While I get that it gives rookies an extra chance, rookies also are those players who you take a chance on and don't lose much on if they don't make it...

Players must be looked after. Look at what they go through weekly. Aussie rules is the most demanding sport on the planet.

The MFC must employ more recruiters if the list is extended.

The suggestion is simply to include the players now drafted as rookies as primary-listed players, not extend the number overall.

(The reasoning is that they work just as hard as players listed on the primary list).

still means we will have to recruit smarter. Certain Rookies are only there on a slim chance, not a bad thing. But the clubs will not pay full wages on a whim.

Stench. They will break some Melbourne clubs struggling to keep up, then there will be another at the bottom of the heap.

Your assertion was that if the list was extended - ie more players recruited - we will need more recruiters. I clarified that the list won't be extended, so the reason you provided for your contention doesn't exist.

It might mean we need to recruit smarter - I don't agree; we need to recruit just as smart either way - but this is a different argument.

Everything I've heard suggests the AFL will increase funding, just like they [apparently] have with other salary cap increases.

Jurrah came to us via the pre-season draft. Was never a rookie. McKenzie is a great rookie story.

Regarding Rookies. I would like to see the current system stay and just increase their base wage. After all they do the same training as listed players. The Rookie system is keeping blokes at the club longer like Newton. Is this a good thing???? time will tell.

The current system is working. It's always a great story for a club to have a succesful rookie come onto the main list. Like McKenzie.

I have heard on SEN that rookies are the ones most likely to benfit from the new TV broadcast deal.

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.
