2010 Player Review - # 30 Tom McNamara

Featured Replies

One word: Potential. It's a big word but Cheney had it - moreso than Tommy Mac to be honest.

Cheney may have lacked a bit of pace, but gee he is more talented and skillful than McNamara as proven in the VFL and the fact that he managed to at least force his way into the Dees lineup a couple of times - McNamara was never considered.

What a load of crock. Cheney had basically reached his potential. He's short and a bit slow, and you can't overcome that, no matter how hard you try. He wasn't that skilful either.

From what I've seen of TMac the possibility for improvement is much, much greater. He's tall, and mobile for someone of his height, has been played forward and back, and kicks nicely too.

I really, really, really struggle to comprehend how you can look at the two of them and think that Cheney has more potential. He might have been further ahead in his development in 2010, but if we were to keep them both, I guarantee you McNamara would be the better player in 1-3 years.

Edit: Great minds think alike E25...

Careful, can't be good for your image.

Simple common sense though, really.

I really did like Cheney and wished he'd have a growth spurt or suddenly find a few extra yards of pace, but history shows us that doesn't happen.

History also shows that kids like McNamara with the right physical tools sometimes manage to develop the skills, toughness & footy brain to be a real player.

Factoring in that T-Mac was drafted bottom-age and it means the payoff could be much greater.

Worst-case scenario is that he doesn't make it, like Cheney won't.

Just to emphasis this - The AFL has changed so much. 5 years ago, the club would have persisted with the slow, short Cheney. The game is just to fast these days for passengers. Bell included.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
