Sean Wellman - AFL's assistant coach of the year?

Featured Replies

This guy has been an absolute revelation for us. We have not had a good defence in living memory, and this guy's built a defence that is showing signs of becoming the best in the league.

What's more, he's done it with blue collar draft picks (Frawley aside, who I think was about pick 12 - and Rivers has not exactly been in Rising Star form for several years either).

Wellman needs some recognition at the end of the season - he's done a truly fantastic job and has had a big hand in setting up our next flag.

Dean Bailey needs another pat on the back for this. Not only has he assembled a great young list, it seems he's also assembled a great coaching team.

Yep, I am in a good mood. Let's start the Wellman love ...

You forgot Grimes. But yes.

We have recruited some good players down back. That was our strategy.

Wellman has them pretty well drilled and we are 7th on the points against table with no 10 goal losses (or obviously 100 pt losses) compared to the last 3 seasons.

This means a couple of things. We are not turning it over as much coming out of defence - player skills have got better - and the midfield is doing a better job of restricting the ball coming in. Particularly by forcing the opposition wide.

The boy has done good.

As Leigh Matthews has said last year, a coach without the good cattle aint a good coach. Wellman is in charge of the fruits of our recruitment in the 2005 to 2007 with Frawley, Grimes and Garland. Absolute beauts.

It would be good if Josh Mahoney had the access and time with similar gold up forward.

Wellman or any assistant coach may or may not be doing a good job but its impossible to make a valid assessment of it unless you are close to the operations of the football department.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
