My Phantom Draft 1.0

Number 2

Recommended Posts

Because he did his anterior cruciate and barely played a match in 2009 ?

Article in todays Hun has him as a late 1st to early 2nd round selection.

I know a kid who played falcons this year and is very close mates with Cal Bartlett and asked him about him.

He said Cal had recruiters and the like telling him at the end of last year he'd be a top 10 pick, but then he did his ACL.

Interest cooled until it could be seen how he recovered from injury, but it looks now like he has recovered a lot better than originally expected and is well ahead of schedule.

Now he's having a lot of recruiters getting in to see him, all hoping the others have forgotten how good he is, hoping they can get the steal of the draft.

I've spoken to a few others about him and looks like he won't be around for our pick 34.

Rightly so.

I'm going to have a crack at picking the top 10 ...

So although my 10 are my opinions they are partly formed from what I refer to as the "general consensus theory" ... I do have one wild card Gary Rohan ... toughest card to predict.

1. Melbourne - Tom Scully - Obvious choice

2. Melbourne - Jack Trengove - 2nd obvious choice

3. Richmond - Dustin Martin - Generally accepted theory

4. Fremantle - Anthony Morabito - Must confess I've got no idea what the Dockers will do ... massive "wild card"

5. North Melbourne - Ben Cunnington - Best fit IMHO However, I'm only 60% convinced but they have to pick someone.

6. Sydney Swans – John Butcher - Logic says maybe Longmires pet project

7. West Coast – Lewis Jetta - All the talk around town but I'm only 80% convinced

8. Port Adelaide – Kane Lucas - Test results speak for themselves ... If I was the eagles I would take him.

9. Port Adelaide – Daniel Talia - No Butcher leads me to Talia

10. Essendon - Jake Melksham - "pick pockets" - and I will leave it at that.

hangon007, no Rohan in the top 10?

He is my "wild card" ... sorry I just cant fit everyone in. Somebody has to slide ala Rich last year. I dont mind if I'm wrong ... all the more choices for us at 11 ..

That's what I was thinking. If your draft actually occured, and there's no reason why it wouldn't, we'd be able to get Rohan at 11, which would be nice.

Oh well, we'll take him in a heartbeat then.

Well you can be rest assured we will take who ever is best available at 11 ... its all part of the games we play.

Only 7 days to go .. ;)

Trying to be transparent for once -

IMHO Rohan is a tough call ... personally I was so upset he won the kicking drill at draft camp ... but thats life.

This all said a done I've tried to base my draft on partly needs and current club coaching personnel in mind - some of them I've held for quite a while and nothing I've seen or read yet has changed them.

I still think Fremantle are so hard to pick - nothing would surprise me. My brother in law lives in WA and is very good with the local gossip but he said to me "IGNFI this year" ... I should also add my other contact in WA was my previous company I worked for "employed" many of the Eagles boys for promotional events in WA hence top quality inside info - but I'm now self-employed and dont talk to the boys as much these days.

It was a tough call with North but I punted on Cunnington because of the Brad Scott factor - but I could easily be wrong.

Sydney I have felt for a long time now that this was there most logically choice - now this is one I hope I really get wrong but saying that I doubt he gets past Ports twin picks.

Port are tough - Tapscott must be in their thinking but current street talk is he will slide & I'm pre-pared to accept that. However, my personal thought on Tapscott is he would be perfectly suited to the MCG yet maybe we will hope he slides.

Essendon - What comes around goes around!

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
