  1. In a rare decision, Charlie Cameron’s clean record over more than 200 games paid dividends after the Brisbane livewire escaped with a fine at the tribunal for his sling tackle on Jake Lever.

    Another bizarre decision !!!!

Brisbane sought to have the impact grading lessened from medium to low, which would let Cameron escape with a fine, despite his guilty plea.

Tribunal counsel Sally Flynn said it was the potential to cause injury that warranted the medium grading, labelling the tackle "inherently dangerous".

Lever's "vulnerable" position, the angle and rotation of the tackle and the extent of the force were relied on to argue for medium impact.

Tribunal dismissed his argument that the impact of the incident should have been graded as "low’' rather than "medium''.
BUT chairman Jeff Gleeson - found exceptional and compelling circumstances to use its discretion to turn the ban into a fine, citing Cameron's clean record.
Gleeson said the incident was careless but at the lower end of seriousness, and noted Cameron had to complete the tackle in a rotating manner to avoid Lever - who is 20kg heavier than him - crushing him due to momentum.

Character references from Adelaide and Carlton champion Eddie Betts and an Indigenous elder also helped sway the Tribunal, but they were most taken by his previous disciplinary record.

The Tribunal also noted that Lever was uninjured in the incident.

"His 207 games suspension-free puts him in a very small minority … only 668 players of the 13,125 who have played the game at the elite level have played 200 games," Gleeson said.

"Almost half of those have been suspended for one match or more. Mr Cameron is clearly in the unusual category in this regard.

I have no idea why considering we were the very first clubs ever in the AFL to pioneer the Irish experiment, we are realistically the only club now not willing to explore this as an option.

When was our last Irish recruit. Last one I remember was Tohill in about 1990.  I would think every other club has had at least one success or several (Cats) since

  4. 1.  Petty has shown he is an A grade key defender. No doubt. Alongside May and Lever, he was a key part of our 2021 Premiership winning tall defence.

    2. Petty played his junior footy as a key defender.  That is his place. Where he can use his judgement, height and strength.

    3.  May won’t play forever. He has 2-3 years left at best.  Petty is only 24, with 10 years of footy ahead. I’d like to see him re-establish as a key defender.

    4. The forward swap should be seen as a make shift option.  I know Petty can mark but he is not a natural forward. His kicking is ok but sometimes lacks the real confidence of a key forward.  I think he’s being “tried” due to deficiencies of alternatives like Schache.

    5. We can’t judge Petty based on Thursday night. Heavens. I’d trade out 12 players if Thursday night was as the normal standard they were capable of.  Petty will be better than that match.

  5. Verrall is developing nicely. Good young kid who was a handy pickup in the 2022 rookie draft.  Sestan also picked as a rookie (2022) looks capable and I’d like to see him work on his aerobic side.  Definitely got a footy brain.

Ironically the 1st round 2022 pick Matt Jefferson struggled and looks a fair way off.  It’s always a gamble to grab a young skinny key forward as a 1st round pick.  Dees have to be patient but need to see more intensity imv.

There is seriously good talent in this years draft pool. Lots of mids and Dees should look at adding one with our first available pick.  Whilst we hope it’s a late first round pick, the depth available means I think there will be still a good quality midfielder youngster in the 15-18 range this year.

  7. I think the Lions players will grab all the votes.  They were 8 goals up before the last 15 minutes saw the Dees actually find the footy in the contest and kick the last 4 goals.  Gawn was clearly our best and may get a 1 vote but I think it’s unlikely.
Probably after 6 games, Gawn sits between 6-8 votes, Trac also on 6-8votes
     and Clarry 2-3 votes.

    I call BS.

Agree. Beveridge is full of BS.

Libba doesn’t stumble or lose his footing.  He simply loses his senses and falls. Have to applaud Parish for checking in him and raising his hand.  There is the game and there is humanity.  Parish 👏👏👏 Bevo 🥔 🥔🥔

So as we head into the bye

    Clayton Oliver- finger - test
    Marty Hore — thumb / 2 weeks
    Shane McAdam — hamstring / 2 weeks
    Charlie Spargo — Achilles / 3 weeks

    Christian Salem - hamstring - 4-5 weeks
    Jake Bowey — shoulder / 5 weeks
    Jake Melksham — knee / 10 - 11 weeks
    Angus Brayshaw - medical retirement

of the 44 on the list, 8 likely unavailable for the Tigers clash.

  10. Umps cleared on the Bombers bandwagon. As bad as umpiring as last night.  Inconsistency is mad.  Dogs had 3 head high tackles all missed and then bombers literally throwing the ball in tackles.

  11. 4.  I have to admit that seeing Clarry in defence and having no idea about defensive play was another coaching mistake. (Are we allowed to query Goodys decisions?). He looked scared with the footy in the back 25 and often misjudged the play.  His mistake to let Cameron goal in the 3rd was a shocker.  Often he handballed to a bloke under more pressure rather than kicking it clear out of defensive 50. His poor night was not the reason we lost but surely Goodys realised HBF is not Clarrys role.

  12. Unfortunately I think our depth has already been eroded due to off season departures, medical retirement and current injury list.  Not sure there’s currently anyone in the cupboard to bring in for the Tigers game aside from Pickett.

  13. Forward entries.  Wow. How bad!!! There was some terrible kicking from all the mids (without exception) that favoured the Lions defence to shut down our forwards. Often kicks were skewed or tumbled when a leading player was available.  The turnovers were horrible.  Seemingly only Tmcd or Riv knew how to direct a pass. Trac’s kicking again was erratic. Viney not much better.  Billings missed targets again.

  14. Dees have been beaten in clearances in 4 of the 6 games, only winning clearances v Dogs and Hawks.  With a dominant ruckman, it’s a damning stat.  This was our real strength in winning the contested clearance.  Somehow the Petracca, Oliver, Viney dominance is lacking. Often there’s fumbles or slipping over (too often) within the stoppage and we are on the back foot.  We actually won the last quarter clearances v Lions (after getting smashed for the first 3 quarters) and it created a different game and goal opportunities.  Need to get our centre clearance and stoppages worked out.

  15. This is about right … coach’s comments

Goodwin admitted that his side was beaten "in all phases of the game" in the loss, but refused to use fatigue as an excuse after three games in 13 days.

"They punished us around the ball, I thought they were certainly harder, they tackled better, they won the spilt ball better, they did a lot of things right," Goodwin said of the Lions' performance.

  16. Easy selection tonight

    Max Gawn -  6 votes

    Tom Mcd - 5 votes

    Ed Langdon - 4 votes

    Trent Rivers - 3 votes

    Jake Lever  - 2 votes

    Steven May - 1 vote

apologies to Sparrow Windsor and McVee who tried

first time that Trac, JV7 or Clarry are not in the votes. They were horrible tonight and completely annihilated by Lions mids.

Very poor  - BBB, JVR, Fritta, Petty
