WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN NEWTON
spirit of norm smith replied to Moneider96's topic in Melbourne Demons
Hope for some news on Ben Newton tomorrow ... -
Rjay ... I have watched all the Vic metro, Vic country, SA and WA championships matches (including 3 of the Vic metro games live). Laverde is not a punt.
-
MFC TAKE NOTE ... don't be seduced by AFL.COM Paddy McCartin marketing exercise. He is a punt. We don't need to take punts. Laverde has all the requirements to be a STAR. We need his talent, pace, skills and direct style. Too good to miss.

Next move is to downgrade Trengove to Rookie list Then add Ben Newton as DFA keep Draft picks 2,3, 40 #53 as Jetta upgrade -
AFL National Draft 2014 Picks 2 & 3
spirit of norm smith replied to Sigil's topic in Melbourne Demons
back to 2&3... Brayshaw at #2 Lever / Wright / Laverde at #3 in my opinion I think Petracca will go #1. McCartin at #5-8 for me. -
no no no no no no no and no
-
Remember Lucas Cook ... You do NOT pick by position. I want the best players.
-
Warning. Agree another key forward would be good but - McCartin is only 193cms - stronger than TAC full backs but not bigger mature AFL types - health issues - prior injuries - ok kick but more of a 50/50 kick for goal - weight issues One dimensional. Laverde or Wright are better options.
-
One to watch... needs more physical development. Not AFL standard yet. Maybe more of a 2016 rookie once he has 2 years in VFL system.

Its a big YES from me if we land Ben Newton. I think he will walk into our best 22 ... -
Who will be our next Neville Jetta
spirit of norm smith replied to Deeoldfart's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think we should cut Tapscott & Evans today and agree to pick in the rookie draft. Both injury hit and we need room for picks 2,3, 40 & 53 -
Laverde is no Blease... he attacks, defends, creates, evades and is bigger ... has the same pace.

AFL National Draft 2014 Pick 53
spirit of norm smith replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
Brett Eddy ...at 53 for me. Mature 23yo skilled 193cm forward. Gunston like. -
This kid has STAR qualities. He is skilled, fast, athletic, smart and importantly gives a second & third effort. That is the definitive of what us required at AFL level. No injury history. McCartin is a one effort type. Past injuries and weight needs controlling. We need quality mids and now. Brayshaw at 2 & Laverde at 3 for me.

A chance at pick 40. Tough as nails I like his attack on the footy. Good footy brain. #1 criteria ... he gets the footy.

The 2015 fixture thread
spirit of norm smith replied to Bring-Back-Powell's topic in Melbourne Demons
Financially the draw kills us ... "it is reflective of where we are as a club". Only the traditional QB home game agst a good crowd drawing club at the MCG. No home games agst Cats, Blues, Bombers, Tigers, Hawks - all 40,000 likely crowd drawers. Play 7 interstate teams as home games. Play 3 low drawing Vic clubs Saints, Kangas and Bulldogs as home games. We will be lucky to break even, despite NT game $$ and Queens Birthday. Only 2 night games for crowd watching... excl the Darwin game. We are the family club. Field of Women game in 2015 ?????????? -
agree... he is worth pick 3 & amazing if we have not considered. Brilliant skills and pace. Pendlebury like.
-
Its a Yes from me... Grab him at 3

Even if someone has made him an offer, we can beat it. 3 years at $180,000 year gets it done. We have the NEED and the CASH -

This is the kind of opportunity we need to grab. Tell him we want him as a PSD pick 2. 22yo left footer, tough and ready to go in our midfielder group. Get him. -

MFC should offer the kid a 2 year contract. Bypass our pick 53, and select him in PSD # 2. Solid, left footer, 22yo, ready to go. He was very unlucky not to make Port's finals team. Emergency on 5-6 times in last half of 2014. -
West Coast must be going well. Just read they delisted Adam Carter. I was super impressed in a East Perth WAFL game I watched this year. Checked to see ge was Eagles listed at the time as I thought he was a prospect. Only 20. Tough and skilled. Not a skinny type. Possible rookie in my opinion. He is better than Terlich in the small defensive role. Handy backup to Nev Jetta IMO.
