Maynard must get at least four weeks
Deecisive replied to leave it to deever's topic in Melbourne Demons
Maynard May have intended to smother the images l saw looked like Gus was in the act of kicking the ballbefore maynard left the ground he was quit away away from him running at full speed at him. There was no way in the world he could have stopped himself crashing into Gus. Turning his shoulder to protect himself only did more damage to Gus. Maynard’s actions were deliberate, not saying he understood the consequences but he did know what he was doing. It was irresponsible, resulting in serious damage, the afl has no choice but to suspend him otherwise they will be seen sanctioning this type of behaviour. As for Collingwood fans would they feel this was ok if this happened to a daicos and left him unable to play and possibly end his career before it starts -
I really dont like the idea of people saying the maynard things was just one of those football things so dont worry about it. The fact that roo may get a week or two for something that had no consequences and maynard's which did shows the absurdity of the AFL's rules and interpretation or protecting the player. They are basically endorsing such behaviour. There has to be consequences for these types of acts. Gus was totally open to the hit not able to protect himself, out of the two him with feet firmly planted on the ground and maynard flying through the air, Gus was the one in most danger not maynard. I still remember the grandfinal against Essendon when Aaron Davis was hit and taken off around the 2nd quarter. That cost us one of our best players. I really believe we need a send off rule for these type of behaviors. If we have a player in their last year of football (ala Karl Dietrich) who does not mind being suspended they can do any sort of horrible thing they like without consequence to them or their team. How far will some players go to win a grandfinal.

A few things about last night, i was there with some of my family at the melbourne end of the ground surrounded by the most obnoxious opposition supporters i have seen in my 50+ years of attending VFL/AFL games. Maynards hit, the ball was coming from Gus's foot at an upward angle, thats where you smother the ball. It was not coming from his head. Maynard left the ground and turned his shoulder into Gus, his protecting himself does not give him an excuse to do potentially irreparable damage to another player. Gus has had head issues in the past. His actions took one of our best players out of the game and they suffered no consequence for it. If he does not get at least 3 or 4 weeks then this would be an absolute disgrace and show the AFL tribunal for the farce it commonly is, i.e. viney got 6 weeks for the first dangerous tackle. As for goody while i was not a great fan of some of the selections the team he put out there was good enough to win it if they applied themselves, and kicked straight. We had a lot of opportunities to win but just could not do it. We had a lot of passengers and a lot of poor disposals. I personally don't mind if roo or tom go out for Grundy. Grundy would have been a lot more effective than either of these as he could have helped max out in the ruck who was getting jumped into by that gutless Cox. he may have even contributed a goal or two, he and Mac could have rested down the forward line where we would have at least had another tall to compete for the long dumb bombs we kept sending in there. Grundy's ruck work is far far superior than roo and other stand ins. In the last game he played his taps in the 3rd and 4th quarter got us running out of the centre. I dont think they should abandon the plan of playing both. Yes it does not always work out, but how many times have we player, brown, roo, tom and other who have failed to really contribute to the score. Let max have a lot of ruck work, but also have a decent replacement to help him out. As for our small forwards, we really need to address this we are not getting enough out of some of these players, some of these guys were hardly sighted, the ball went in there 60+ times. Apart from Kozzie where they hell were they. We need to look toward other options maybe think out of the box. i wonder if rivers would work forward, though with Gus out maybe give him a run in the midfield. Do we really need smalls, if Dunstan was available i would suggest him as an option, he gets a lot of the ball and does a lot of tackling both of which have been seriously missing from our small forward at times. but his out. What other options have we got besides than playing the same smalls/interchanges, etc. I dont understand why some of our players are so slow in moving the ball on Bowey for one, holds up the ball when he has open players short he can pass to, but delays kicking it, then invariably goes long. Now to the future, ideally swans beat calton, so that we can play the swans at the MCG, but whoever wins tonight, we have proven we can beat anyone if we are playing well. I believe we can still win the premierships. we should have won against collingwood early in the season by 5 or more goals not 8 points, we should have won last night by 2 or 3 goals but did not. What better way to end the season than producing our best and win a premiership by beating collingwood. Go Dees.

besides working on ball trajectory can they also fund glasses for these obviously vision impaired umpires

my 2 cents worth we seemed to do well when grundy went into the centre bounces last night, especially in the last quarter. Without Grundy in the side we are totally dependent on Max. He is always being double or triple teamed and bashed around the head and pushed off the ball (with no frees from the umpires). When the opposition scores a point we kick out to the left side of the field everytime, the opposition has two or three players blocking pushing and harrassing max which can often leave him out of the marking contest, so the oppositon mark it. I think we can play both. max and grundy may need to spend a little time in the forward or even half forward to allow them to play up the ground a little more. They cannot do much worse than some of our other forwards who had 6 or 7 disposals for the game. The way i saw it last night we were outclassed in the first quarter but we contributed to that. Twice in the first quarter Kozzie got the ball and kicked it straight to an opposition player all by themselves. one kick was after an amazing mark. We turned the ball over too many times, i think i saw of disposal efficiency at around 54% at one stage. which means almost every second time we get the ball we disposed of it badly, that is what did a lot of damage to us. The umpiring was as poor as i have seen in a while at one stage 3 carlton players were tackled in a row and everyone of them disposed of the ball badly, worse than Oliver's Throwing the ball free and nothing. and i dont know how any umpire could ignore Rooyes legs being taken out from under him, yet we have multiple umpires ignore it. But umpiring aside we lost it from poor disposals in the first half, we just dont seem to be able to put 4 quarters together. we have bursts of good play but also bursts of going to sleep for a quarter or so. Carlton dodged a bullet last night, the umpire if he thinks a Calton player might have touched, clearly shows he is unsure so the benefit of the doubt should go the kicker, it should not be up to the replay to prove something that the umpire 6 meters was not sure of. Hopefully how the ALF will spend the $'s to install ring cameras on each goal and point post to improve their monitoring.

the dees seem to be only putting in for half the game, last week they played well for half of each of the four quarters, did not put together one 4 quarter effort. similarly in other games we put in a few good moments but then seem to let the opposition back in. it would be good to see 4 quarters out of them. All games are important to win at this stage of the year, none should be taken for granted.

Saints forward line is dangerous, hence having them sit on the bench for most of the game freed up May to cause havoc. if he had to mind king there is no way he would played as well. it was a win but sadly we do not look like a premiership winning team. Kozzie needs to sit one out, Ben brown was good on the lead, shame we see so little of it. i dont understand the need to bomb it into the forward line constantly, we have proven that we seldom take the mark and our smalls rarely gather the crumbs. Why do we keep doing something that is so wrong.

disappointing performance, lack of running and chasing by a few players are keeping the saints in this. even though they are tired they are committed i wish i could say the same about all of our players.
-
he has to tackle someone before that becomes a risk, and so far there has been no danger of that happening.
-
give kozzie 10mins in the next quarter if he is not showing any improvement put smith on. a lot of poor disposals as usual, just lucky its the saints that arent kicking straight. ben brown has show he can mark on the lead so why are we still kicking it to a pack. some of our player are just too slow in moving the ball on we have player open short that they could go to, to keep it moving but they go back and slow it all down before sending a long kick down the line where the saints talls mark it.
-
I dont understand why we persist with kicking it long to a stationary forward line. we get out marked far more times than we mark it. I really think we need to get BB back in the side petty to the backline after a stint in the VFL to get some match fitness. Joel smith may be a good interchange with Rooey.

not great skills, poor max is having a shocker. We need to bring it home now, we have been playing poorly at times if we can just lift in this last quarter we should win it. I bit disappointed with some of the holding the ball decisions that have gone against us, and those that have not gone against geelong when they had time to dispose of it. Holding the ball is such a raffle a couple of geelong players when they get tackled just hug the ball no attempt to get rid of it, but its still a ball up. i thought you have to at least pretend to try to get rid of it, but that football. strange viney got pinged for throwing the ball in that quarter the commentators said they thought he handballed it but the umpire was on his blind side probably did not see it. so are we paying frees for things we dont see?

Ah her parents must be so proud!

Dont like Cox's style when he rucks he makes sure he puts his knee into his opponent every time he can. One bounce went astray and the ump blew the whistle re bounce but cox still had a swing he hit gawny not the ball.

So in an all or nothing grandfinal there is nothing to stop someone willing to deliberately hurt opposition player(s) to win the game or take good opposition players out of the game. so they serve a suspension next year, not a hugh penalty against the potential reward. we need a red card system, you hurt someone like that and your team has to play man down as well. kind of reminds me of Carl's D's last game for melbourne.

If ben brown is not in then Rooey will end up with Moore on him. That we dont want. We need ben brown in, he needs to be on the move all night dragging moore along with him so we can kick to one of our other forwards. long kicks into a crowded forward line should be avoided at all costs if moore is there. I hope brayshaw fixes up his kicking also, last night he turned the ball over heaps of times in the first half. i wonder if Smith may be a better option than tomlinson down back as he probably has the jump to take on Cox better than tomlinson.

our disposal of the ball is absolutely terrible, we are turning it over time and time again.
-
need to man up and stop their use of the loose man all the time. that is the only way they are getting it forward
-
poor effort, Unfortunately i can see carlton beating us next week the way we have been playing. Then Collingwood will run around us like our players are witches hats just standing there. Then Geelong and by then season will be over. Hard to see how we are going to turn it around we keep bringing in players without giving them match practice through the VFL, we keep giving dud players a chance, drop them then bring them back hoping for a miracle, unfortunately they are still very much dud players.
-
Which sort of sums it up our small forwards were nowhere near the drop of the ball, they did not tackle they did not put pressure on the opposition.
-
port player ran shoulder first in the melbourne player on the line to keep him out of play no free. that holding man is a disgrace all night long people have been holding and dropping the ball and all of a sudden the ump pulls that our of his butt. Why can we not play like we did in the third quarter for four quarters. hopefully they have got up enough steam to keep going in the last to finish port off.
-
we have one of the best ruck and mid field combinations, but we are losing the clearances by a mile again. may be put viney in the ruck and let gawn rove he at least has long arms so may actually be able to grab one of the buggers. When we have the ball they man up on us, no easy kicks, when they have the ball we zone off allowing them free players and easy kicks everywhere. we are counting on them kicking badly so that we can get the rebound when they kick to position as port are doing so well it just ends up with them having another shot. We are not out of it thanks to ports poor shooting for goal and fritters clean kicking, the main positive is that we have a fair amount of the team playing badly we only need them to lift a bit to turn this around.
-
lose play theirshort passing is excellent our coverage of their lose men is woeful and our smalls are virtually non-existent when the ball comes to ground. Not a good first quarter, hopefully they will pull their finger out and cover the lose men dont give them easy possessions through the middle of the ground. without that 50m we would have scored 2points for the quarter.

Maybe hunter and langdon should change sides, have may kicking out to langdons side instead of hunters. it cannot hurt.
