pick 3 and 4

Brodie Grundy, Sturt, 15 April 1994, 202cm, 100kg

Grundy was an All-Australian as a bottom-aged player last year and has continued to develop to the point where he is clearly the premier ruck prospect in the draft. He was the dominant ruckman at the champs, earning All Australian honours again, and impressed with his mobility and athleticism. He can go forward and kick a goal and doesn't mind throwing around his big frame in a contest.

Oliver Wines, Bendigo Pioneers, 7 October 1994, 185cm, 83kg

Wines' inside game is perfectly suited to the direction that AFL footy has taken in recent seasons.He averaged 24 possessions over the carnival, the majority of which were usually contested, and also impressed with his willingness to spread away from the contest.

Troy Menzel, Central Districts, 22 September 1994, 186cm, 77kg

Menzel, the brother of Geelong's Daniel, is one of the puzzles of this draft.He followed up a nine-goal bag against Tasmania with another six against the Northern Territory, is strong overhead and gets to the right positions inside attacking 50, but he underwent a LARS knee reconstruction as a 16-year-old. He has talent to burn, but will doubts on the synthetic ligament harm his standing in the draft order? He has absolute confidence in the surgery and should prove too tempting for a team to pass up in the first round.

Jake Stringer, Bendigo Pioneers, 25 April 1994, 191cm, 91kg

Stringer is a forward in a similar mould to Membrey, but he has a few more strings to his bow at this stage. He's very hard to place in terms of his draft ranking as he badly broke his left leg in the first TAC Cup game last year and is still shaking off the effects of that injury. If his work ethic during his rehab is any guide, his draft credentials will only be enhanced in the back half of the Pioneers' season.

Jimmy Toumpas, Woodville-West Torrens, 2 January 1994, 183cm, 77kg

The South Australian skipper is one of the blue-chip prospects of this draft who could have at least been a part of the conversation about the No.1 pick if he'd had a free run at the back half of the season. But, the classy midfielder has managed sore hips for the past 18 months and will go in for season-ending surgery after the champs. He can play in multiple positions and has already made his mark for Woodville-West Torrens at senior level in their run to last year's SANFL flag.

Sam Mayes, North Adelaide, 20 May 1994, 187cm, 78kg

Mayes is probably one to watch when he gets back with SANFL team North Adelaide. He was the All Australian centre half-forward as a bottom-ager last year, but had a quieter carnival this time around. He showed glimpses of what he's capable of at times - he kicked a brilliant goal from the boundary down in Geelong - and has undoubted class, but will be keen for a big finish with the Roosters.

Dayle Garlett, Swan Districts, 9 January 1994, 180cm, 75kg

By his own admission, the quietly spoken midfielder had some work to do with some off-field issues late last year, but all the reports coming out of WA and Swan Districts since then have been positive. His game-changing combination of speed, ability to run and carry and goal sense saw him earn All Australian honours.

Ben Kennedy, Glenelg, 3 March 1994, 174cm, 76kg

Kennedy is a quick, busy onballer who is a thumping kick off his left boot. He averaged 26 possessions across the champs and kicked four goals against Tasmania on his way to a second All Australian selection.

Sam Colquhoun, Central Districts, 20 December 1994, 179cm, 72kg

Colquhoun is a small defender who gets a stack of the ball coming out of the back half. He averaged 28 possessions for SA and provided plenty of rebound for the Croweaters. Not many of his possessions are contested, but his value in launching forward thrusts with great precision saw him named in the All Australian team.

Nick Vlastuin, Northern Knights, 19 April 1994, 187cm, 83kg

The Vic Metro skipper played predominantly off a half-back flank at the championships and impressed with his hard-nosed approach to the contest. He's not the quickest player on the park, but he reads the play well, which allows him to get into the right spots. Distributes the ball well and was named in the All Australian team.

Lachlan Plowman, Calder Cannons, 11 September 1994, 191cm, 86kg

Plowman is the only player in the top 25 not to appear in the national carnival. He suffered a serious elbow injury in the weeks leading up to the championships, but is widely considered one of the premier key position prospects in this draft. He appeared in the best players in four of his five games for the Cannons and is one to watch on his return to the TAC Cup.

Taylor Garner, Dandenong Stingrays, 8 Jan 94, 186cm, 77kg

Garner nearly provided this carnival's Hayden Crozier moment at Subiaco, but just failed to hang onto what would have been a special mark against WA. In addition to his strength overhead, Garner can win the contested ball, which saw him named in this year's All Australian team.

Jonathan O'Rourke, Calder Cannons, 21 April 1994, 183cm, 75kg

O'Rourke is a very balanced midfielder, who makes good decisions and is an excellent kick. He ticks a lot of boxes as far as recruiters are concerned and earned All Australian honours for a very consistent championships.

Jack Viney, Oakleigh Chargers, 13 April 1994, 178cm, 80kg

Viney played the last two games of the carnival after recovering from the broken jaw he suffered in his first game in the VFL and showed why he'll be an asset for Melbourne right off the bat. He has a combative streak and the hardness to match, but he has more than brute force in his bag of tricks and should see AFL action early next year

Hutchings is not the best of the WAFL mature aged players. I would have ahead of him Kane Mitchell & Luke Blackwell both at Claremont. IMO

Luke was always a good mover at Carlton before delisted. Some Blues supporters still reckon he was unlucky.

He is a skilled left footer, gets the footy, has good pace and has footy smarts. His bio backs it up.

If he is overlooked in the national draft, he MUST be on the Dees rookie menu.

Let's get back on track.

Colin Sylvia has all the skills, he can take a great grab, kick the ball a mile, run in a straight line and is as strong as a bull. His tackling is one of our best alongside Jones and Mckenzie. Over the years, both injuries and his own discipline have not helped. Even this year, he had a good preseason before the broken vertebvrae impacted him.

Colin must be played in the midfield, and rested fwd or on rotation. Oposition supporters respect his ability and know he is one of our "very few" real dangerous players. back and support Colin, as he will be a KEY to our rebuild. Sylvia, Jones, Trengove, Gysberts, Mckenzie + Viney&another 2-3 new 18yo midfielders will be vital. Our engine room needs to improve.

I thought I would have a go at listing our best and worst kicks, trying to sort the wheat from the chaff. I won't list all players just those who go clearly into one of the categories.

GOOD KICKS:

Watts. Best kick in the team on both sides of his body. When he makes a blunder it is usually a real shocker but he is our best

Davey. Smooth, silky and accurate but often gets caught on his right foot. This year though he has used his right foot well on a few occasions. He is not as penetrating as he once was.

Dunn. This bloke is a good kick long or short but makes some decision errors at times. Best long kick in the squad.

Bate. Right up next to Clark for goal kicking ability. Long, penetrating field kick also. Absolutely no right foot.

Clark. Great technique and very reliable, especially considering our poor forward play means he takes most shots for goal from the boundary. Is a great pass when mobile.

Green. Elite kick but no right foot.

Jones. A strong reliable, penetrating kick.

Moloney. A great kick but often bombs away without thinking.

Morton. A really good kick but like Watts makes noticeable shockers that often turn into opposition goals.

Sylvia. A great kick, and one who can kick well at full pace.

POOR KICKS

Bail. On the run he is a horrible kick, at full pace even worse. If he can ever get a full season without injury it might improve but...

Nicholson. Has patches where he uses it well but is a constant butcherer of 25m passes, usually over the head of the lead up player straight into the hands of the opposition player chasing him.

T MacDonald. When switching the play, often misses targets by a big margin. Seems to be OK hitting a leadup player. Frawley was this bad once.

J McDonald. Just misses easy targets, especially short ones. His action looks OK and it spins properly but just goes int the wrong direction.

Bartram. Has improved a lot this year but I still have a sense of the Ben Hollands about Barty, and by this I mean I put my hands over my eyes and say to myself "please handball, please don't kick it!"

Fitzpatrick. Horrible technique - drops the ball with both hands and is very unco.

Spencer. Worst kick on our list, and that is a title no player wants!

Grimes. Has been a whole heap better this year but still misses eeasy targets coming off half-back. Rarely kicks more than 30 metres.

Howe. Set shots are a nightmare for him which is surprising because his field kicking is really good.

Petterd. I reckon Steve Kernahan taught him to kick. Helicopter punts are his kick of choice.

Trengove. His kicking this year has been embarrassing for the poor kid. In 2011 he was one of our better kicks and I do not know what happened.

POTENTIAL

Cook. Great technique and can kick from outside 50. Haven't seen him use his left.

Strauss. He was recruited for his kicking and is displaying it more and more often at Casey.

Tapscott. Also one of the reasons he was recruited. Hasn't shown it much in 2012 but can kick on the run like Beamer. Hope he can produce it.

Jetta. A really good kick at full pace but can't kick 50 metres.

Too generous on Bate. Can turnover the footy with the bottom group. Jack Watts also turned the ball over 3-4 times agst the Tigers.

Sylvia is by far our best user, short & long, with Jones not far behind.

Agreed. Spencer has had 2 poor games. He shows 1-2 things all game (vs Tigers, his only play was the tackle he laid on nahas). He is UN-coordinated, and not a smart footballer. Does not present around the ground or demand the ball in kick ins. Marking in a contest is non-existent. Big and raw. Has been for 5 years. Move on at end 2012 finally.

In: Green, Couch, Gysberts (Jamar if fit)

Out : Dunn (susp), Magnar, Nicholson (injured shoulder, if not dropped)

Green to take Rivers spot up forward, Riv to go to back line where he is best (Dunn to never play key back again please)

Magnar looking more like a good VFL player by the week - kicking not up to standard.

Nicho dropped - as you can't play Nicho and Bail in the same side - both too big a liability with the ball in hand. Bail can find the ball and works hard both ways so should be given a run of games to truely test foot skills at the top level.

Nicholson's run and carry was the standout agst the Tigers. He defended well and whilst he had 2 turnovers (Bail, Watts, Tapscott all had more). His pace is wanted in our team.

4- Watts: I'm a huge Watts fan, but his disposal did let him down at times. That being said, he is the person who's hands you want it in when the ball is in our back half. I also loved seeing him go in really hard and thought he was harshly pinged for holding the ball.

He often played on Shane "Titch" (178cms) Edwards. He was outmarked 2-3 times by Edwards. Edwards setup a few more goals. Watts turned it over 3-4 times & often went with a 15 metre sideways pass. Dunn was much more effective in his getting the ball outside our defensive 50. Watts kickouts were "agonising". He did 4-5 good marks & competitive efforts today but a back sweeper on a small fwd. Please. Maybe a real test for the No.1 is getting it inside our fwd 50.

footnote: Compare to Deledio. Deledio is quick, dangerous and wins the footy to create and kick goals.

please no humour here, be serious. Gawn has shown a 5-minute glimpse but knees are a big big worry. Fitzy is awkward, not smart and a long way off.

6. Jones - heart of a lion. Runs & gets the hard ball

5. Sylvia - the class is apparent. Can be damaging. does not stagnate with the footy.

4. McKenzie - like Blundstone boots. Not flashy, but tough, reliable and gets the job done.

3. Dunn - liked his grit, good kicking (long and strong) and was unlucky in several "free kick" incidents.

2. Frawley... sure Riewoldy kicked 1.5 but goal was from a soft free kick and Frawley marked him all day

1. Nicholson ...loved his run, pace and competitive spirit. This kid can play. Maybe a role on the wing and not Half back next week.

Haven't seen the game, but the stats say he was one of our best.

Please, watch the game before making comment. Stats are very very misleading.

I agree Josh Toy would be also worth an offer ... maybe offer a 3yr contract at $250k per annum. This kid can play . Unsure why he is out of the winless Suns team

Logic ... but no concrete moves. Just theory. We need them for depth ... we do not have class midfield, class half back or real tough workers. Plenty of depth types.

Jack Viney wants to be at MFC and we want him. Simple. Pick him with the pick required and move on. We hope it will a round 2 (#24 ish) but if its pick 3, such is life.

He will debut in Round 1 2013, alongside our new midfield (Jones, Trengove, Gysberts + Viney, Jimmy Toumpas, Koby Stevens). .

The 18-year-old co-captain of the Dandenong Stingrays has been named in the latest Australian Institute of Sport intake for under-18s.

The year 12 student is performing a juggling act of maintaining his studies at Koo Wee Rup Secondary College, football training during the week and playing competitively at the weekend. “It’s pretty hard to balance at times,” he said. But the Cranbourne teen, who would love to be drafted by Collingwood, makes use of his spare periods during school hours to catch up on his homework.

Stingrays coach Graeme Yeates called Pongracic “your classic on-ball, hard-at-the-footy type”. “He’s got a big, strong body and craves a contest,” Yeates said.

Pongracic, who is also part of the Vic Metro team currently competing at the AFL U18 National Championships, is hoping he’ll be drafted to his beloved Collingwood Magpies this year, but would gladly move to any club that recruited him.

Agree with your scenario 1 and 2 ...getting Viney, Toumpas, Gartlett would be a huge boost. Gartlett is liken to Cyril Rioli, maybe better at same age. There you go. And at 24, more likely Sean Lynch, Tom Carter, or Jason Pongrecic.
