  1. Not too fused with the surplus of tall defenders. He will develop at Casey for 2 whole years before we need to worry about list spots.

I think people expect too much from a rookie signing. We are giving this guy a year to see how he develops at the highest level.

  2. They really phoned that one in didn't they?

    • Where are the dees at? Haven't made my mind up
    • Gawn, Grundy how is that going to work. Don't know.
    • Forward line could be an issue. Might be fine. Dees fans excited about JVR.
    • Off field issues last year. i'm sure they have been sorted
    • Straight sets losses last year in finals. Will that leave scars? Probably not.

Half back Brayshaw makes me feel a little bit ill.

Get Bowey and Rivers in. We need speed and flair from half back.

Harmes, Sparrow, ANB, Spargo and even Gus and Hunter competing for one less spot in the 22. Left over is the sub.

Similarly it’s too tall and JVR, Brown, T Mc and even Grundy are competing for 3 spots. JVR had a great start to summer. Tommy moving well. BBB apparently very up and about in the recent match sim. Grundy settling in. It will be a good battle for spots.

Where would you have Brayshaw then? I certainly preferred him in that defensive wing position from 2021. He was put there to plug a weakness and did a great job. I'm not sure if we need him there anymore.

I would probably have him as first rotation off the bench to fill that role and plug gaps. It would potentially move Harmes out of my best 23 which might be a reality by the end of the season.

I reckon McVee May be the bolter!

What are you basing this on though? I don't get down to see training but haven't heard much in the forums here to suggest he has improved on last year in a meaningful way. I didn't see anything last year to suggest he is anywhere near getting a game.

  5. Never good to be missing a best 22 player, but happy that we have Bowey who should be ready to play the role.

I'm excited to see how Rivers is progressing too. He should be aiming to solidify his spot in back half over Brayshaw or Hibberd this year.

Hoping Salem isn't out for long though. He never seems to get a good consistent run without injury of some kind

    2. Viney - Will continue to be a midfield mainstay but would give him a slight haircut in his midfield minutes to allow someone like Pickett with a touch more speed to be thrown into the mix. Viney is capable as a pressure forward in short stints.

I haven't seen anything to suggest that Viney can play any other role than inside midfield.

Viney had a great year. He is underrated outside of Demon fans and maybe even underrated a little on here by a few too. He is excellent in the inside midfield position. The problem is that Oliver, Petracca and Viney don't have great disposal by foot. We may continue to lament our forward delivery while continuing to celebrate our contested midfield domination.

  7. I would be super happy picking up Barnett. Not sure if it's worth trading out a good pick next year though.

Sounds like our type of ruck.

    https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/35089878/afl-2022-draft-phantom-draft-chris-doerre-espn-full-afl-phantom-draft-every-club-every-pick

This year's most highly touted ruckman, Barnett is a contested marking weapon whether pushing forward or behind the ball. Though the middle, Barnett is an effective tap ruckman, but what separates him at ruck contests is his strength to win the ball himself out of the ruck before disposing of the football.

Another medium sized forward seems like the last thing the Swans 'need'

They don't need much elsewhere either. Very strong list ATM. Key position depth would be ideal for them but it's not the best draft for it.

He could be a bust, you're right. Picking a player at 14 in any year has a risk at that. Pick 14 over the history has a 90 average games played compared to, lets say a pick 5, that has 125 average games. In the same area of the draft we have Hewitt who has behavior issues and might not get a game considering our midfield depth, and he might go home in 2 years. We have Ed Allan who might not get a game either and go home to WA. We might pick Cowen which looks like a awesome Hibbo replacement. He might go to the new Tassie team in 2 or 3 years time. There's a lot of hypotheticals.

But one things for sure, is that the people who watch every under 18 game, say that he has enormous upside, scoreboard impact  and a ridiculously good reading of the ball in flight to dominate aerially. They also point out his lack of strength and physicality but that can hopefully be easily ticked off in time, which is why he's rated a mid to late 1st round pick rather than Cadman who's rated top 3. While we're contending, we ain't getting a top 3 pick. That's why equalisation is in place, so a team like us doesn't get a Cadman. Jefferson isn't perfect, but no one at pick 14 will be.

Jefferson isn't going to be ready to play the way we want in the short term. Therefore he is a long term tall forward prospect. There are other options when you are looking long term. Next year's draft or a trade later on.

My point with the bust comment is more around picking Jefferson at 14 means we are less likely to pick/trade a tall forward next year.

The problem is that we are in a position where we need to make the call as soon as possible. I'm not opposed to picking him. I really want a tall and hope he is the answer. I wouldn't be opposed to picking up an additional tall forward next year regardless of us picking Jefferson.

I just can't see him making an impact for a long time. Defenders at VFL level won't allow him to do what he did in his highlights let alone at the top level.

And just for clarification... I'm not saying he won't make it. If he gets picked up then I will back JT in. His record demands it. I'm just having my 2cents based on the limited footage that is available which I'm entitled to.

My view is this. Lets ask ourselves what our key forward stock will be in 2 years time without Brown and McDonald. Yes we can get one in a trade, but good ones are very hard to get and we shouldn’t bank on that. Without picking Jefferson, in 2 years time we have JVR (in his 4th year) and Schache (a back up KPF) and that’s it! Yes, we can get a Key Fwd in next years draft, but in 2 years time he’ll have only 1 year experience. JVR and and a 19 yr old won’t hold up when we’re contending. Key forwards normally take 3 to 5 years.

    With Jefferson it is:

    -JVR (in his 4th year).

    -Jefferson (in his 3rd year).

    -Schache (a back up KPF).

We need a tall forward. Without a doubt. Jefferson is the right age, right height and will likely be picked up around our first pick in the draft.

Is he actually good enough though? What if we get to 2025 and Jefferson is a bust? Most will back in Jason Taylor to make the correct decision. I just hope it's not a case of 'we needed a tall and he was what was available at the time'. Which is how I feel about the Lucas Cook draft pick.

Before we try out anyone they have to earn it

Laurie, Howes and Woewodin haven’t yet ticked that box IMO

If Laurie can improve his fitness he might get a look next year - he does have skill just not convinced he is currently an upgrade on anyone in the 1s

Howes I’m not convinced will make it - I know he has plenty of people here that think he’s going to - very happy to be proved wrong

Woey is a good honest footballer - good enough to be a regular AFL player ? - next year will tell us a lot more I think

Please expand on your opinion on Howes.

He did ok in his first few Casey games before the stress fracture took him out for the majority of the season.

What have you seen to write him off already?

    The Dunkley trade:

    • Brisbane receives Josh Dunkley, a future third-round selection and a future fourth-round selection (tied to Melbourne)
    • Western Bulldogs receive a second-round pick (currently No.21), a future first-round selection, a future second-round selection and a future fourth-round selection (tied to Geelong)

Thought the F4 swap interesting.  One tied to Geelong, one tied to us.   It will probably be pick 60 something for pick 60 something and the advantage could go either way.

    Hardly worth swapping.

I noticed the same thing. I took it as a slight on our team. Brisbane think we are going to finish significantly lower than Geelong.

    It was not Shache.

If we don't land the KPF we have been targeting I will let DL know at 8:30pm who it is.  If we don't get him this year I am certain we will try again next year.  He has been on our radar since he was a junior even touring the club as a16yo. We were to take him in our next pick in his draft year but were beaten to him.

The club see this player and JVR as the perfect two pronged KPF future.

Of course! Don't tell us now. Tell us at 8:30 because it's going to make all the difference!

If you tell me now I might spill the beans and then the deal is off!

    😂

People that want to pot this thread, how would Tassie go retaining players?

    Terrible

I'm Tasmanian. I want a team. We won't retain players though. Hobart is a great place to grow up. It's a great place to move to once you hit your 30s and are ready to settle down. A 20 year old who moves here? Not good.
