It's hard to know with Bowey  Even though he got a bit of the ball he butchered it and was ineffective against their smalls who created havoc. He is small and not very aggressive but usually highly skilled.   Maybe with TMac and Petty back in the backline, it becomes more contested and strong, less reliant on him contributing to that, so it doesn't show up so much in his game and he then has more time to deliver properly.   We won't know until they all play together.  Windsor also becomes a better player with those two back.  A strong suggestion by others is that Rivers needs to take Bowey's defence spot now that Langford will hold down a midfield place, Langdon has gone to the midfield and Sparrow is going well.  Especially when Kossie comes back.  That is 7 major midfielders.

I'd rather see Rivers in the middle and Lingers back to his wing for Billings Stinga.

Rivers has show something through there in patches last season.  Need to persevere.  His upside is bigger than Lingers through there imho.

Bowey hasn't been the same since his return from the LTI problem but certainly deserves a fair stab at getting his mojo back.  He may need to try and find that mojo again at Casey however.

  2. FWIW after one praccy and noting that it's just one pre-season warm up so not casting anyone in the bin at this point.  Comments purely relate to this game in isolation...

    POSITIVES:

    Clarry

    Tracc

    Big M

Windsor but more dangerous and effective when he pushed higher up the ground.  Back to the wing for mine.

AJ - Early jitters but improved as the match went on.  I like

Kozzy - only one quarter to go by but electrifying from the get go.  Needs to play 80 / 20 Small Forward / CBAs (or thereabouts) once he returns though imo.  We need his goal kicking smarts and ability to convert.  Our constant inaccuracy is a momentum / coach killer.

Sparrow ️ - has shown VG early pre-season and in-seaaon form before though.  Needs to bring this level or so most weeks.

    PASS MARK

Langdon but like others i feel he needs to get back to the wing pronto for Billings

NQRS THAT WEREN'T AT THE LEVEL

    Billings

    Howes

    Bowey

    Chandler

Woe - albeit with limited TOG.  Needs a bigger hit out to see where he's really at.  Looks slow both across the ground and with decision making though and will need to start showing off other assets this season if he's to gain some traction and a regular spot in the 22.

That is so good that Luker is back in the fold, does he look OK? Also great that Windsor is back on the park but his infection is taking a while to clear up and I think that the Kolt will find it hard to be on the sidelines for such a long period, also very happy the Spargiepants and Tracc are both back in full training.😁👍

DZ it's great to see you using a nic name i can relate to and get.

I was beginning to think the King of England had joined in at training from GW's (& others) earlier reports.

If it’s any consolation Shane actually likes “Smacca” but that counts for nothing because it’s not up to the player to give himself a nickname, and once they are given a nickname, it’s set in stone. Soz DD 😭

Oh well.  Poor old Smacca can't take a break though eh

I'm somewhat perplexed at how the club came to the conclusion that one sole attendee, Mr P.  Fence, is considered an entire family!?

And which players are signing his autograph book??

The AFL's charter is to grow the game...they should be doing the work and not pushing it to the clubs.

A big  reason they granted academies to Victorian clubs was because of the whining of McGuire and co in regard to the Northern academies.

Instead of fixing things they just made them worse. The whole system is a dogs breakfast...

    As you've highlighted already rjay.

Nothing's changed and i believe the zoning fiasco started about 1967 yes?

2027 is just around the corner.

Nearly 60 years of VFL / AFL Circus Crappola with no end in sight.

I have liked Aiden Johnson as a recruit. He can be a role player for us. What role and where on the ground I'm not sure. I didn't see him much in the sim but I haven't got used to how he looks so not so sure how he went.

Jeffo. I purposely didn't comment on Jeffo because at this stage I'm not too positive on him. But in his defence it is still a small sample. I think he may be a frustrating footballer for us for a number of years as we see signs that get us excited only for him to have a no impact game the next week. I don't even know if he'll start in the Casey or the AFL side.

After reading this you're another D'lander i've crossed off my 'could be Chris from Camberwell' shortlist DM

Trac, Chandler and sparrow were in the no touch fluro hats earlier but now are doing some kicking work with light pushing in the contest

Chandler appears to be in this group alot of late.  At least he was for long stints last season from what i saw and heard on here.

I'm still scratching my head as to how RG isn't on our list in some form already.

The bloke has more talent on his big toe than a couple that are running around out there at the moment.

Teared it up in the match sim highlights and aside from no tank, he looked the goods either through the middle or up forward in his appearances at Casey last year.

If we don't, someone else will surely.

Only seen him play twice (live) but from what i witnessed he looked to be as fit and solid as any ruckman running around at either level.

He almost turned the second game i saw him play on its head single handedly out at Sandy last year but i have to curtail any enthusiasm with the knowledge that the AFL is a diff prospect for many.  Even those who sometimes put their hand up at VFL level.  He did run out of puff in the last quarter in that match.

He's a big unit with a big frame who hits packs hard and can take the odd decent grab.  Will certainly make his presence felt whether he's at Casey or the odd cameo upstairs.

He reminds me just a tad of Meek and how he goes about things, albeit alot older.

This club has bent over backwards to assist you and it is you who owe us big time. If there are further issues with fitness or conduct, prepare for a year in the stiffs at Casey.

Just the thought of that propsect would be enough to straighten even the most bent player up surely!

If SWYLs intel Is right, the board must remove Pert today.

I still favour a top to bottom review of the entire club by an independent third party at arms length from the board and CEO. Everything in the table.

Is there any chance Simon and others inside the FD (some players included) wanted to see if they can move Clarry on but weren't sure if that was possible / best for the club in terms of the suiters / offers.

They wanted to have their cake and eat it too but didn't want to put Clarry or themselves in the horrid position if they had to walk him back in.

So they went with the Perty option.  Perty taking the heat but managing to put the feelers out 🤔

I would see that as cowardly,  gutless and very poor form but just putting it out there as one of many theories.

Guaranteed. AFL HQ control the media and Geelong, Collingwood and Carlton are their faves.

There is some history repeating here though.  We cant seem to hold on or foster decent players through a crisis it seems.

Some end up leaving and turn it around at other club (clubs who are better at doing so?) and end up turning their footy career around.

The latest Clazz saga feels like history repeating for me.

A large part of why we are where we are on this of course might be on Claz but the question has to be asked, why us so often?

We just don't feel like a destination club for whatever reason, even after a recent premiership.

Quite sad really.  We had a great opportunity post 2021 and it's looking more and more like we may have blown it.

With Bailey Smith nominating the Cats, I don't know how they have any draft capital to also obtain Clayton Oliver.

The Melbourne Football Club needs to hold Clayton Oliver to his contract. We have all the bargaining power.

I am also angry that the CEO Gary Pert thinks he can act independently from the coaching team in determining the future of a player. Especially if Simon Goodwin wants Clayton Oliver to stay!

If this is found to be the case then I want Gary Pert sacked for meddling in football affairs without the consent of the rest of the football department.

I have been a supporter of Gary Pert as CEO. But this Clayton Oliver (and Christian Petracca) fiasco has been a PR disaster for the Melbourne Football Club.

Heads need to roll and Gary Pert needs to go. Otherwise, we will have a massive downturn in memberships next year due to losing beloved star players!

Is it possible that the only other person aside from Simon, wanting to explore every avenue to keep Clarry was Rofey?

With her either being pushed out and / or leaving of her own accord seeing she was seemingly the only other person trying to hold the Clarry dam wall from bursting and a big Clarry fan / nurturer from last year on.  Her departure then left Pert holding the reigns at the top.

Having a counter view to Roffey and then some alleged further misdemeanours, Pert then decides to take it upon himself to put the feelers out and cut our losses now instead of waiting for the levie to break so to speak in 2025.  Players (Tracc?) getting more upset and potentially losing multiple good guys during or at the end of 2025 and trouble bringing in potential trade bait instead of loosing Claz now?

If Pert did take this route the question is why him and not those in charge within the FD?

Does that mean there's also a major split of differences now post Rofey between Simon (others within the FD) and Pert?

We’ve been chasing every decent and half decent power forward for the past 5 years. It wasn’t a decision to not recruit a power forward.

Grundy was plan f as plans a to e were not successful

Im baffled as to how anyone can see it any different

You honestly think we saw some quality forwards were available and said no thanks, let’s go for Grundy?

I would've taken plan G to Z ahead of plan F (Fail) for Grundy all day every day Dub.  Even if it meant getting a tall big bodied B grade forward in that could chop out for 15 min in the ruck for peanuts.

Free up cap space for a potential classy outside mid, running HB with skills by hand & foot.
