Gerard Healy left the MFC not because of money but when Tom Hafey made a convincing story that the Swans were closer to a premiership than the MFC he left since he played in an era of 1979-1985 were success on the field was few far between.

I know we are getting off subject, but that final against the Swans in 87 was one of my fondest memories. I remember thinking, " I bet you're glad you left Gerard" ha ha

Very interesting.. I would doubt we would call off any events though.

I would guess that we would introduce a minutes silence tonight instead of calling it off.

As for the Queen's Birthday clash, Queen Elizabeths real birthday is 26th of April.

We dont celebrate until the second Monday of June.

Prince Charles is on 14th of November.

I would imagine that we would retain the public holiday on that date and simply rename it.

Not to seem pedantic at this time, but her birthday is April 21st (one day after my Mum)

Yep same, my voice is pretty scratchy, my brother's wasn't much better and my sister was basically imploring the supporters to make some noise - our first final we've attended since 2018, reigning premiers, qualifying final and only a couple of occasions the crowd were up and about. It does my head in mainly because I just don't understand it.

I shouted myself hoarse, even got a "chewy on ya boot" for their first miss on goal. I did my bit. Would have been nice not to have to line up for half an hour to get 2 metres up in line at the bar to sooth the throat too.

  4. I was at the G the last time Melb played Sydney in a final , lets hope for a similar result:

    1987 Melb 21 23 149 to Syd 10 13 73

What a day. I remember it rained nearly the whole game, but Melbourne handled the ball like a dry day. Great memories. I remember shouting at Healy, that he should have stayed a Demon. (Not that he could hear me of course)

  5. I was at the game, it was a lousy night for big forwards, Weed competed in every forward entry, I think probably the  best 1 disposal game I have seen. And Freo are a snipey team they scragged him at every opportunity,  umpires just turn a blind eye to this every week,.

This has got disaster written all over it. Turf wouldn't settle in a couple of days in the middle of summer, ACL Russian roulette.

I understand the AFL gave the Dockers permission to train on the ground on Weds. (to get used to the conditions FFS)

I suppose take it with a grain of salt, but Salem named on the half forward flank is interesting. A good team selected for a day of 10-20mm rain earlier in the day. You'd think Chandler would get the sub.

Maybe we could do a phantom Bulldog injury and get Chandler on in the 4th Quarter

Disagree with most here on this. Always protect the player going for the ball. If you go low to get the ball and are caught high, it's a free. Dropping the knees, to get the ball should not be punishable.

Umpires also can and do distinguish between actual frees and baited frees. Umps will not pay high tackles if a player raises his arm so it clips his shoulder.

I think you may be missing the point, most agree here that as the law stands at the moment the free will be paid, however what I am advocating if you stop awarding frees for high tackles then it could save someone a very serious debilitating injury later in life. Seems to me a small price to pay, just change the rule and stop players deliberately putting their head in the firing line.

Surely the solution is for the umpires to make their decisions based on where initial contact was made and by whom.

For example, a legitimate tackle high on the arms of the tacklee that then slides to the shoulders by the actions of the tacklee? Play on. Simple. Any attempt to wriggle into a high contact is to be ignored.

Who made the contact? If the tacklee drives his head into the body of the tackler, play on. Simple. So long as the tackler was stationary as is mostly the case.

It was always the rule that the frees were won from the contest, not from trying to con the umpires. With three umps on the field this should be easy to stamp out.

If this doesn't work then I would agree with Macca that there should be consequences for cheating and bringing the game into disrepute. The stagers should be staged out of the game.

Tiers is correct, it really should easy to stamp out. But the Neanderthals of this world will scream that we are de...manning...the sport. But it won't be them pushing the wheelchair.
