  1. Titus O'Reily ‏@TitusOReily 10m10 minutes ago Fremantle announce Colin Sylvia as a top up player for Ryan Crowley
  2. Careful! That sounds like tanking to me. I'm sure what you meant to say was that he saw pre-season matches as opportunities to discover more about his team and the particular skills of his younger players.
  3. Somewhat fortuitously I only got to see the first half (streamed, not live). All I could think was what it must have been like to be a supporter of pretty much any other club playing Melbourne in the Neeld era. It's amazing how good you can look when under minimal pressure.
  4. Or perhaps we were able to hire the joint at a ridiculously cheap price because of the F1 nearby.
  5. See, I don't get this attitude. I'm not saying the players shouldn't be suspended for 6 months, 1 year or 2 years. But I will take no joy out of it. It will be a sad day for AFL football, not a glorious one.
  6. Which means it will be reported in the newspapers on April 1st. How will we know what's legit and what's been written as an April Fool's day prank?
  7. And what type of penalties could be imposed if Infraction Notices are issued to non-playing staff? That is, could the individuals be banned from doing whatever they are doing now, assuming they are still involved in the AFL, wherever they may be plying their trade (ie, just like the players)?
  8. What exactly does this mean? Did we do 80% more than last year? Or they had a set number of kms that each player had to do in their program and, on average, they managed to do 80% more than was set down for them? Or something else?
  9. While I agree, it is possible the club was also deceived. Nevertheless, the club should still be accountable for what the contractors it engaged might have done.
  10. Here's an excellent summary published by the law firm DLA Piper of the legal stoush. It doesn't discuss the merits of ASADA's case, just the legal dispute between Hird and ASADA and the Federal Court's findings.
  11. Hey, BB. Was this in response to my post? If so, if you've ever had an injection at the doctors, have you ever seen the label of the vial you're injection has come from? Could you read what it said? Don't let movies and TV programs fool you. Basically all chemical solutions are clear. And I suspect any labels would be in small print making it quite difficult to read what it said. If, indeed, there were any labels. (And if there weren't any labels, surely that should get some alarm bells ringing.)
  12. I appreciate you are typing with tongue in cheek (I think!) I suspect if someone analysed the success rate measure by number of games played there'd be a close correlation between draft order and numbers of games. We know not every first round pick will succeed and likewise not all rookies will fail. But I suspect the number of 200 game players who started as rookies is low. In fact, that number probably equals the number of first round picks who didn't get to play a game.
  13. I suspect the only way they could use the 'unconscious" defence (or equivalent) would be to say they were told they were being injected with one substance (known to be legal, such as Thymomodulin) when in fact they were injected with another (such as Thymosin B, or whatever the illegal one is called). Whether this happened or not, I have no idea.
  14. I'm not disputing the thrust of this post, but was the ability to check via the ASADA website available to the players in 2012?
  15. I have no idea what meaning this was meant to convey. Presumably a result of having been a player (and assistant coach?) under the master of the deliberately inane, Kevin Sheedy.
  16. Hold on. Let's correct something. Campbell Newman didn't fall on his sword. The voters dumped him.
  17. I'm not asking the AFL or any sporting organisation to go soft on any drug cheats. But I'm concerned that the AFL structure could be damaged irrevocably, not just by what might happen to Essendon, but what might follow. I'd love to be certain that our club isn't going to be mixed up in this at some stage. But there's no way I can be certain that we won't.
  18. And there was no investigation (at least, not publicly stated as such) into tanking at any clubs other than Melbourne. The fact that no ongoing investigations have been reported doesn't mean (a) that there aren't any or (b) that there won't be any in the future. Having said that, I hope there is no need for any investigations into ours or any other club. But I'm not so naive to suggest that every club hasn't bent the rules at some time.
  19. BB, how confident are you that Essendon is the only club at risk? I suspect all clubs have looked at the rules and nudged against them at some stage (not specifically drugs/supplements. But maybe salary cap manipulation, draft tampering, tanking (cough) etc). I think the glass houses and stones adage should be considered here.
  20. I suspect these sorts of scans and tests are done to lots of players throughout the year without gaining any attention in the media whatsoever...unless the player in question actually has an injury which might require him to miss games.
  21. I love Demonland. Every rookie we pick is a potential superstar before he's even played a game. I wonder why all those professional recruiters couldn't see that when they overlooked his name about four times each during the national draft?
  22. I agree. But that boundary has already been crossed. It's the next line in the sand which appears to be troubling. Perhaps Mick Malthouse was on to something when he talked about crossing the Rubicon. It's a phrase with a definition entirely suited to this saga. I'm just not sure who wants to cross it and when.
  23. I imagine what constitutes "training" is a difficult concept. Let's just say, for example, that playing a fully fledged practice match is training but throwing a frisbee is not. Between those two extremes there is a boundary not be crossed. But where is that boundary? What if throwing the frisbee is replaced with throwing a baseball? What if throwing a baseball is replaced with throwing an American football? What if throwing the American football is replaced with kicking an American football? What if kicking an American football is replaced with kicking an Australian football? What if kicking an Australian football is replaced with hand passing and kicking an Australian football? What if hand passing and kicking an Australian football is replaced with a full practice match? Where's the boundary across which they must not cross?
  24. Wow. You've got better TV access in Philadelphia than I have in Melbourne.
