I'm unclear whether you think you might be a bad father for signing him up or for waiting 15 months to do so. On balance, I'd say the 15 month delay is the greater concern.

I assume "delayed concussion" is a real thing given it has been accepted by the media and MRP as genuine. That would explain why he wasn't assessed during the game. As I said, I accept that the concussion was genuine. My point is about concussed players not having a mandatory rest.

Hence the explanation of "delayed concussion". But I'm not quibbling about whether he had concussion. I'm assuming he did. The real issue to me is why Carlton allowed him to play the following week. It seems to me to be a decision that lacks consideration of the player's long-term welfare.

Slightly tangential. Let's assume Rowe genuinely had concussion. Why was he allowed to play yesterday? I thought there was some relatively recent rule or agreement amongst the clubs (let alone a duty of care) that made it clear that any player with concussion must not play the next week (as a minimum). And if there isn't such a rule, shouldn't there be? I would have thought we know enough about concussion now to make a minimum one week break compulsory.

Well said. However, we should hardly be surprised that some sports people smoke. Apparently some also take drugs and drink too much alcohol, too.
-
It's only that if he's under strict instructions from the club not to smoke. Otherwise it's a bad habit rather than a minor indiscretion.

I rather like the idea of Peter Jackson fielding calls from Peter Jackson.

It's probably already been considered but decided against because of the OH&S risk. They might miss the dartboard and hit [insert name of 'favourite' journo] instead.

But please do it legally, Jake. We can't afford to have you suspended.

My 3 word player analysis V Geelong
La Dee-vina Comedia replied to joeboy's topic in Melbourne Demons
You've got a very short memory. It's only a few years since we relied entirely on Nathan Jones. We didn't win as many games as Geelong, though. -
Just happy to have someone in the side with a real nickname rather than just adding a 'y' to the surname.
-
I guess we should conclude that Spencer won't be playing either.

TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND 3
La Dee-vina Comedia replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
On this description, he sounds more like a pirate than a footy coach. -
That's a good point. But I don't think injury reports should be used anyway. I'm in favour of changing the scheme from one of intent to one of outcome. In other words, did Player 1 intend to hit Player 2? If the answer is yes, then whether Player 2 sustained an injury or not should not matter.

That might be hard to administer given some players may have separate injuries or form concerns that keep them out longer than the affect of any blow received. However, I've often wondered whether suspending a guilty player specifically for games played against the club of the victim might be more equitable. For example, using Jordan Lewis as an example, would it be more appropriate if he were to be suspended for the next two games plus the next game against Carlton? (Or, perhaps, the next game and the next two games against Carlton).

I agree with everything you say except that the club could have made Viney Vice-Captain now, rather than co-Captain, for the same reason and for the same long-term result.

Changes for next week v Geelong
La Dee-vina Comedia replied to Oliver Sholem's topic in Melbourne Demons
And it showed that perhaps he's a better forward than a defender. -
If there is any chance that Roos may again coach I hope all the key employees we can't afford to lose (assistant coaches, development people, list managers. etc) have watertight contracts to stop him from stealing them from us. It was clear when he started with us that he wanted people he was familiar with around him. I would have thought he would want to use the same modus operandi again. In fact, I'd go so far to say that if he can't get some of those key people to join him, I don't think he will coach again.

Changes for next week v Geelong
La Dee-vina Comedia replied to Oliver Sholem's topic in Melbourne Demons
If we go small in the forward line (ie, Weideman and Watts only with no Pedersen, Spencer or T Smith) would we be exposed if Taylor plays forward given our lack of tall defenders? Is this another reason to play a third tall? Or would Taylor playing in the forward line be considered to be advantageous for us? -
You're probably right. I wasn't so much thinking of moral arguments or ethics but more about the consequences. Medical professionals (in theory) can lose the right to practice if they lie. Players don't lose the right to play. However, I suspect it's probably pretty difficult to de-register a medical professional, so I'm thinking my argument is a weak one.

I might be naive, but I suspect medical professionals "fudging" medical reports would be far less likely than players being dishonest.

The AFL was supposedly also concerned that the old Tribunal system sometimes required players to travel across the country to give evidence. However, that is obviously now unnecessary given things called cameras and video links. The AFL's other concern was likely also to be the blatant dishonesty which went on with victims swearing blind that they never felt a thing.

I take your point about the difference outcome makes in the non-football world. With respect to the cash penalty for a lost appeal, I had thought about that, but it gives wealthier clubs an advantage. A poorer club might be less inclined to make appeals whereas wealthier clubs may not care as much and proceed every time to appeal.

Fist or open hand - you be the judge

Or use the following excuses: I'm Josh Kennedy, and based on precedent, that makes me innocent I thought I was hitting Colin Sylvia, and based on precedent, that makes me innocent -
Did Salem actually play off half-back or was he a true midfielder? I was at the game and couldn't tell.
