  1. And for what it's worth....

The only reason I am against biased Melbourne supporters is because it restricts intelligent and constructive

criticism and talk on forums such as these.

Comments like that are as bad as a Christian arguing religion with a Jew.

according to melbourne supporters in 3 years time we will have the AA team. scully/trengove to be better than judd, morton to be better than goddard/the next goodes, watts will be as good as riewoldt (if not better), frawley to be better than scarlet, bate will be the next o'keefe, grimes going to have a brownlow, sylvia will win a norm smith all things i must have heard in the last 2-3weeks

  2. It's because guys like McKenzie get overlooked and because Rivers is (from memory) the one and only defender to ever win this award, that it is rubbish and has no credibility. You basically have to kick 6 goals or have over 30 possessions to have any chance of getting a nomination if you are not a top 10 pick, you don't have outrageous hair and you don't play for a winning side. Because apparently it's easier for a kid to play in a losing side

If Naitanui wins the title this year, you may as well rename the award "NAB Possible Talent and a lot of Marketing Value Award".

bastinac, hannebery, banfield?? come on the awards not that bad. tayte pears was rewarded for a super consistent year without ever being spectacular, i'm sure jordie will get his nod if he keeps up his consistent form. also if that's a shot at nicnats nomination he was adjudged BOG by both coaches, would of been as ridiculous as scully not being nominated in round 7.

  3. Was the boundary umpire who disallowed Trengove's mark on the line, the same one that overruled the goal that Peter Gonis (goal umpire) called a goal?

i don't understand how this could be a throw in, I haven't watched the replay but if the ball was not fumbled(pretty sure it wasnt't) it should either be a mark or on the full.

  4. Can't agree with any of these.

Bennell was good. Has been for the last couple of weeks. Pressures, runs, creates opportunities. He could have kicked 2 or 3 yesterday if things had gone his way (players getting a handball out the back, not being told he pushed a player in the back when he didn't etc.)

Dunn is not an important player. Far from it. He's a fringe player. Isn't playing horribly, but isn't doing enough to tell me he'll keep his spot when Morton, Jurrah and others start pushing for selection.

Martin played well. Did what was asked. Best ruckwork I've seen from him ever, and he looked passable when he went forward. Definitely took his chance, and must be retained next week, as we come up against another team with mobile ruckmen (McIntosh and Goldstein).

agree with martin/dunn amendments. bennell looked exciting, but he didn't actually do anything imo.

  5. I'm actually disappointed Cousins isn't playing for the Toigs. I like watching players like him, it would be a great learning experience for our young midfielders, and I don't think he would have much influence on the result (I'm expecting it to be closer than many think).

I almost considered starting a petition amongst Dees supporters for Cousins to play... :)

yeah, would of loved to see scully play on cousins the whole game. could of really given him an idea of what an elite runner is.

  6. 30 minutes per day per team is a lot of looking when you multiply it by 100 working days in a season and that's a conservative number of days.

I reckon I could write an article of comparable quality on all of the 16 teams with just one week's TOTAL research and get my facts right.

The quality and superficiality of football journalism is appaling.

    true

  7. I thought it was actually a pretty solid article considering it's Mark Stevens. Best 22 was as close as I've seen from any journo, only obviously bad (IMO) was bennell in for Jones. (Also pettard/miller could be debated) His comments weren't particularly insightful but were pretty fair imo.

Also if you spend 30mins a day looking at MFC related things (articles/forums/etc.) assuming a normal working week (40hrs) you spend more time on the MFC than Mark Stevens.

  8. Once again I will ask the same question I asked the previous page........ WHAT ARE FIFA SO AFRAID OF LOCAL COMPETITION FOR?

To say they arnt, why do they DEMAND that, not ask nicely or even plead or beg NO!!!!!!!!! they DEMAND.

And as a reason for giving soccer everything they demand is because more people do soccer than footy, that is plain dumb, follow that logic through.

Well, you see the problem here is that FIFA hold all the power, they really have no preference where the world cup is other than to promote the game more and a country with 22mil people is probably not high on their list of countries to promote. I would say that the majority of Australians would want the world cup in our country, there's only a handful of diehard afl/etc. supporters that are opposed to it. That's why FIFA can make demands, because we as a country are the ones who want it, FIFA has plenty of countries extremely willing and able to host one of the biggest sporting events in the world. I'm sure these other countries would be happy for Aus with such a great history of hosting big sporting events to drop out because locals are afraid that there game will suffer due to ~8 weeks not playing on MCG/etc.

  9. Ha, I enjoyed that one Nugget - the smallest average winning margin for a club is 1 point, us in '82 (?) I think.

Depression warning for some of these.

Since I've been alive, 1987, the finals have looked somewhat like this:

Melbourne have appeared 12 times - playing 28 matches for 16 wins.

The only teams to make more appearances than us are Essendon, Hawthorn, Geelong, North Melbourne and West Coast - these teams have collectively won 11 Premierships. Indeed, we are one of only two teams to have played in a Grand Final in that time and not have won one.

Only 3 teams have more wins in finals matches - West Coast, Geelong and Brisbane.

Geelong have had the most finals wins in that time (20), appearances in Grand Finals (7) and West Coast have played the most finals matches (37) [not including draws]

Only the Dogs, Tigers and Dockers have not made a Grand Final.

Richmond have won 2 finals matches in this times.

    <3 this stat

  10. haha he is sticking his chest out more than a 14 year old girl at a blue light disco

    hahaha

C: If I was to choose one player from those pick #1s, I'd probably pick Riewoldt first... But after that I'd take Watts. Seriously. And even then Jack has the potential to knock Nick off the top.

    hmm... hodge?

  11. The idea of free agency can work in the AFL, although it depends on the system that is used.

There are a couple of good examples of free agency in other sports. Take the premier league for example. There is free agency there, although it rarely comes into effect. Free agency in the EPL exists in that players can go anywhere without compensation to their previous club once their contract has expired. However, as clubs rarely get any compensation once a player leaves (there are situations in which compensation is determined by tribunal for youth players etc), clubs always tie players to long term contracts.

I can see the EPL method working in the AFL. It would simply remove the PSD, for all but the delisted players. The few players who enter the PSD could choose their club freely, but players like Ball etc wouldn't go to clubs via the PSD, but by selecting the club that they wanted most due to either the likelihood of success or the money they could earn.

would the EPL system really work in a environment with a salary cap though? I don't think some afl clubs would survive turning into something similar to EPL, we just dont have the supporter base.

I would imagine that the afl would go with a MLB or NFL(I think) type system. In the MLB they rank players in categories and if you lose a player from category A (top 20% of players) you get first round draft picks, if you lose a player from category B you get other draft picks. If you lose uncategorized players you get nothing (standard). In the NFL(iirc) you can nominate players (not sure how many) and if clubs want to target your nominated players you get massive compensation (like 2 first round draft picks). Of course there is still some advantage to bigger richer clubs but if the afl is going free agency I imagine something like that would happen so that big clubs cant rape and pillage smaller, poorer clubs.
