I can't emphasise enough - I love Dion Prestia, I think he is a star of the game and could be a routine All-Australian and all that jazz. But the recruiting scenario as I see it is 'choose one from list A, or two from list B'. And my preference is to get two from list B if list B means Isaac Smith and Stephen Hill.

Who do you think will also debut for us in 2016?
Little Goffy replied to Left-Field's topic in Melbourne Demons
But you will care when they do take the field and stomp around like monsters! It would also be a delight to have an unexpected breakthrough from an unheralded player. I think the expression is "I care, but I don't mind". -
I also appreciated the little apologetic hand up gesture to the umpire where Garlett acknowledge he'd made the mistake. And that it didn't disrupt his concentration.

I'm not the first to say it, but I'll say it again. 187.

If we can get Prestia for $450-500k, then we are really, really doing something right and I will stop worry and set up a little shrine to our recruiting team. Bringing in Jack Redden or Levi Greenwood would cost that much.

Want your mind blown? Here we go - Melbourne v GWS - total number of free kicks - 46 Port vs St Kilda - total number of free kicks - 27 And just in case you think it was because of intensity of play or anything - Melbourne v GWS - tackles 104 Port v St Kilda - tackles 178 I'd check the contested possession count, but the trouble is, free kicks count as contested possessions!

I've said it before and will keep saying it any time it comes to mind. Recruiting 'stars' is fraught with trouble. High pay packets lead to overall wage inflation. Over-spending of draft picks for that extra 15% performance which makes someone a star instead of a 'run of the mill first-rate player' is a risky business. Got to look for value and suitability when recruiting established players. Gunston, Gibson, Burgoyne, McEvoy, Lake, Hale - Hawthorn committed respectable value and got exactly what they needed. Some of whom turned into, or returned to being, top players after the trade. Burgoyne was the most 'expensive' in picks and also arguably the least value of the group, but still a great match for what the Hawks needed to add to their list and I wouldn't think they'd regret it. The other Benchmark clubs of the last decade, Geelong and Sydney, have either developed from within (Geelong) or also practiced astute trading for suitable and good-value players (Sydney). What's interesting is that it has been the clubs 'past their run' who have now sought to bring in the huge stars, first Sydney with Franklin and Tippett, and now Geelong with Dangerfield. You could suggest that, once you are already a top club, that's the time to target stars. Discounts for reputation make a big difference. So... If getting Prestia is going to cost us 800k/year for six years, even as a free agent without a trade price, I'm not convinced. What do we really need right now? What is the biggest gap in our list? Is any single person going to say anything other than 'a reliable ruckman/forward to support Gawn and diversify our attack'? Who is going to be our David Hale?

Absolutely. Whether Melbourne beats Collingwoood will be up to Melbourne. But in the meantime, it looks like Collingwood are doing a good job of beating Collingwood overall. I love their slow slide. Premier, Runner-up,, 4th, 6th, 11th, 12th... and now? All done with total confidence. And in the end, all somebody else's fault, too, I'm sure.

Collingwood might become the new Richmond. Held together by the same handful of elite players, but lacking the all-round ability to compete with top clubs. What odds that Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Adams and Treloar will fill 4 of the top 5 B&F places at Collingwood for the next three years? That kind of stagnation is a 'Full Richmond'. Collingwood DID NOT BEAT a top-6 team last year, and only two from the middle 6. Yep, the ultimate 'flat track bully' team. Plus, they appear to have blown their drafting, OR, even better, their youth development has failed. If our Kennedy keeps up his newfound form, and Freeman at the Saints can turn it up, it would probably be a final humiliation for the Pies and for Buckley personally. Is it any wonder that ol' Eddie has finally gone completely bonkers?

I'd reckon there's an element of trying to control the tempo of the game, especially with still quite a few young players out there. Just haven't got the hang of it yet. Definitely needs to be learned. Especially the part where we make sure we are still dangerous even when pushing defensively. Doesn't explain the whole mid-game malaise on saturday - obviously things got a bit tangled up there.

During the Sydney - Collingwood game, from the inestimable Brian Taylor: "...they've have their enthusiasm sucked out of their bottom..."

I gather there's a few people who think that 'if the opponent would've won if they had kicked straight, then it doesn't real count as a win'. R3 V Adelaide - 7.13 55 to 12.8 80 R15 v Essendon 7.18 60 to 10.9 69 R 21 v Carlton 7.13 55 to 12.6 78 I for one am pretty excited to hear about our impressive ten win season in 2015. Also, I do wonder if we had some kind of allergy to kicking more than 7 goals.

And yet, amazingly, the facts don't change. Vandenburg, Garlett, Vince, Hogan and Bugg were joint second with 4 each. Anyway, it's a moot point. Viney had so many clangers because he had the ball in his teeth while picking up and knocking together two GWS players with his arms. Makes the ball drop a tad difficult. Watts had a goal, two official goal assists and at one point it flashed on screen during the game that he had some crazy number of score involvements. He took risks in dangerous places and came out well ahead. If you want some really impressive clanger numbers, Heath Shaw the All-Australian rebounding defender had 8, on his way to 50% disposal efficiency. Somebody did a quietly superb job today.

I feel especially chuffed about it because it took the whole team doing their jobs to get there. I think pretty much all of our players will be feeling like they deserved to be a part of the win. Possibly the best feeling out of this is that we are right on the cusp of fielding a complete 'good AFL-standard' best 22, week in week out. --- You've just got to laugh that Jesse Hogan was having a really terrible day yet finished with 17 disposals and 3 goals. Phil Davis had an absolute blinder of a game - I just can't help wondering what happens if the opposition simply doesn't have a serious tall defender capable of going with him? Will we see four quarters as effective as that last quarter? Scary. Y'know... like... what if he's matched up on someone like... say... Patrick Ambrose? --- The other question is, where are we going to fit all of Brayshaw, Petracca, Trengove, Dunn and Lumumba? --- Oliver was game-high for clearances. A beast during the game, and then adorable in the after-match interview.

Wowee. That's kind of a bit unhealthy.

It was a very open game, from what I noticed. That suited Carlton's style quite well. In the end they just tired, stopped connecting with eachother and the ball movement broke down. If Carlton had had any true forwards available, or simply kicked straight early on, would have been a different result. Oodly, Carlton were actually ahead of Richmond for age and experience. It is very hard to place exactly what the status of Carlton's list is - last year they had injuries and poor form limiting a number of their should-be-stars. Plus Malthouse was coaching them and much of the playing group actively hated him. Richmond on the other hand - they have 8 very good players and then fillers.Carlton's fillers outperformed Richmond's, maybe just because they don't know they are fillers, while the two-class culture at Richmond is deeply ingrained. At least as far back as Wallace! This is why I think they'll never go all the way with this team.

Definite gun. Don't throw your money away on Brownlow though. As others have noted, there are too many factors working against him. - Carlton wont win many games - Gibbs, Murphy, Kreuzer and a couple of other Blues are all capable of huge games. Votes will often be split in games they win. While we are talking about Carlton young guns, after pre-season and one game, I'd say Weitering is a solid chance of following Cripps to the hallowed ground of being runner-up to a Demon for the Rising Star.

Eleven Pies players test positive to illicit substances
Little Goffy replied to McQueen's topic in Melbourne Demons
The research was actually a survey, not a hair sample program. The players are asked a few simple questions, like "Would you like some drugs?" The Collingwood players thought it was a genuine offer. -
Roos flags possible Dees-GWS Grand Final
Little Goffy replied to RedLegs23's topic in Melbourne Demons
What an appalling piece of 'journalism'. Roos says 'GWS and Gold coast are also young and developing fast, maybe a bit ahead of us still, we'll see' and 'Obviously we are looking to rise up to the top level in the next few years, at the same time we anticipate they will, so...' "In the best of all words..." And that gets turned into a "prediction' of a GWS/Demon Grand Final. [censored] stuff. -
Round 1 - A solid, competitive win where we reassert our defensive rigor. Round 2 - A wild ride where we go all out attack, confident we can crush them in any shootout. Round 3 - A reality check where we almost blow it from lack of concentration in the 3rd, but claw our way back for a hard fought win with many lessons learned. That'll do me for the start of the season.

Flag Designs (Connection to City/Chinese Community)
Little Goffy replied to ctm's topic in Melbourne Demons
The pair of fingers being held up is a gesture almost only done during selfies and group photos, and has no particular resonance with any other aspect of East Asian culture. Yeah, broadly it correlates with a thumbs up. But it is also often a very feminine/girly/cute gesture. You know, comes packaged with the cute selfie smile and all that. Surely if we want to connect with Chinese cultural symbols (and Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese, for that matter) there is one obvious and ideal option. Sun WuKong. The Monkey Demon King. An all-powerful, nearly god-like being with incredible physical prowess, a tendency to cause trouble and unwavering loyalty, who also is celebrated traditionally on the day after the mid-autumn festival - i.e. mid-late September. He is also profoundly loved by kids. Y'know, it never occurred to me before that the lunar new year and the mid-autumn festival line up beautifully with the start of the pre-season competition and the peak of finals. -
All a bit ho-hum. After a look at his other cheap articles,I will have to add 'Dean Bilton' to my list of AFL media people who it annoys me are getting paid. Long list these days. Back in the day, even Bruce actually earned his money. Learning and remembering names when commentating, for example.
