Leigh Matthews: On picks 1 and 2 - Drafting is always a combination of the best player when your pick comes and balancing that with the size and shape your team will need in the longer term.
Leigh Matthews: On Newton - He is 193 cm and just turned 22. Normally players of this height that show some potential, as he has, are allowed plenty of time to develop.
Leigh Matthews: On recruting - I think Melbourne are in the situation where they will take the best young players with picks one and two rather than swap one for an experienced player from another club and I think this is good policy.
Leigh Matthews: On McLean - I think trade is a consideration but I would be surprised if Melbourne didn't see him as one of their core players to be retained.
Leigh Matthews: On pick 2 - I don't know this year's draft class well enough to make that sort of call.
Leigh Matthews: On Watts - He was just too light to play senior football this year and should be regarded as a long-term prospect as opposed to a Daniel Rich type who was already physically well-developed. Watts selection was about the longer term future, not the present.
Leigh Matthews: On the three delistees - I think with the policy of building a side for the future Melbourne made those decisions which I could not argue with.
Leigh Matthews: On development - No particular area should get more focus. They have shown good signs in all three and should be continuing to work on them all.
Leigh Matthews: On Sylvia - Played very well over the last part of the year when Melbourne looked a lot more competitive. Has always looked like a small-medium player who depends on marking the footy. His improvement will come from becoming a better midfield runner.
