  1. Nah, he will be fine if he can score a number one drive. Red Bull are a good team, but Webber will always be number 2 after last weekend unless Vettell completely blows it.

There is strong Talk that Massa has had enough, so if that is the case i would love to see Mark take his place in 2011

webber would be crazy to leave red bull. and leave a good car which won the constructors.

  2. Pakistan's effort yesterday against South Africa...Kind of sums it all up for international cricket really doesn't it.

"Let's not go for the runs in case we get Bowled out & then everybody will think we were on the take-Lets just walk off with 13 overs to go & take the draw"

Not worth playing the game with that attitude me thinks.... B)

not a good start for austraila in hobart against pommies !

    hughes - 2 causght

    khawaja - 13 caught behind

    ferguson - 8 caught behind

watson out for 6 against tassie in sydney/

  3. I thought BP said at a draft night last year that he was not keen on drafting ruckman early? if that is in fact true than I can't see us being keen on Gorringe.

was that a comment in general? afterall, that was last year. circumstances may change year to year.

  4. No idea.

I'm sure E25 will be here soon to fill us in.

just seen he's clip on the Draft on afl website, looks pretty good on feet. capable in the air with good body positioning, has good vision too. but it is only a small minute or so of highlights. you are right about jacobs left foot. didn't see him on his right though.

    edit

    cannot post link. sorry

  5. As posted in the "Hale alternative" thread:

I reckon we're gonna have 4 ND picks - we should delist PJ and Tommy Mac - and 5 rookie picks even if we retain Newton. That means we can put 9 new players on our list. If we reckon that PJ and TMac are the best available option at any of those 9 positions then we can pick them up. Retaining Newton deprives us of a 6th rookie pick - 10th player overall, retaining PJ and TMac deprives us of ND picks 49 and 52 - 3rd and 4th player overall, there's a big difference.

i reckon they should do that. get 4 ND picks plus 5 rookies and retain Newton.

  6. Chris Johnson and others may well feel sorry for his current circumstances and the break between him (and possibly his father) and the club is regrettable. Alan Johnson was not just a Melbourne great he was a great bloke and I've previously shared a couple of stories here of the time when I met him through his association with a VAFA club.

But if Chris or his supporters are upset at where his career sits at this particular time, then he should spare a thought for a former teammate who came to Carlton at the end of 2008 and was also delisted by the Blues this week.

During 2008 I was watching the progress of South Australia's Rhys O'Keeffe at the Under-18s championships. He was a dashing half back flanker/wingman who made the Under 18s All-Australian team and was named as South Australia's MVP. At that year's AFL National Draft the Blues got him late in the draft and I thought at the time that they had made a wonderful aquisition by selecting the running defender.

O'Keefe only played a handful of games with the Bullants in 2009 before contracting osteitis pubis and ever since, he just couldn't get his body right.

No, I'm not suggesting for a minute that we try to recruit him but his story demonstrates that there's a fair element of luck in this game and I hope that CJ reflects on O'Keefe's situation a little more before he has his next whinge. I think he might even discover that his outburst was unjustified and in that realisation, become a better person for it.

Good post. i heard the interview on SEN. it may be some time before he comes to that realisation.

  7. I don't usually answer stupid questions, hence the lack of a response.

Jurrah has been overtly soft in AFL and VFL matches, hence the query, and hence the concern that he may be found out in a final.

Morton has been soft too, so the same query exists.

Watts hasn't been soft in the sense of the other two. He isn't hard, but he doesn't lack courage. Watts will stand under a pack knowing what's coming. He does need to lift his intensity and learn how to better contest, but if he is soft he's soft with a small 's'. There are degrees of everything. I've seen Jurrah at Casey where his avoidance of contests has been cringeworthy.

I have zero concerns about Grimes, Scully and Trengove when it comes to committing their body; and they don't need to show me that they'll be able to step up in the red hot cauldron of a final. I know they will. If a player has a flaw in the commitment stakes it's exacerbated in finals. They don't have that flaw. Others do.

Jurrah is the most exciting talent in the AFL. With an increased confidence in himself and his body I expect him to improve the areas where he's currently deficient. But unlike others that pretend they don't see what they see, or aren't able to adequately decipher what they see, I have no compunction in expressing areas of concern in a player's makeup.

I doubt very much it was a stupid question, now highlighted by your in-depth response, of which i thankyou for that. it certainly gives much more clarity to your thoughts. I gather your opinion of Jurrah is soft with a big 'S'.

whilst watching jurrah at casey and some of the avoidance of contests you've seen, would some of the avoidance have perhaps anything to do with physcological scars from the return of his injured shoulder ? more to the point, have you seen an improvement in getting to contests since returning to Melbourne late in the season as compared to his previous time at casey post injury ? or have you cringed time and time again throughout ?

if this is indeed the case, i too have concern for jurrah being found out in a final.

  8. Back on Sylvia. Since the rise and rise of Ablett Jr, I've always fantasised about having a player that's genuinely inside AND outside, that can accumulate touches, and can finish accurately and at great distance. In my mind it's these players... the ones that extract run and deliver the ball remove the need for two players who can each do one of those jobs. eg, rather than have Jones give it to Davey, why not just have someone do both? IMO it's those players that take the pressure off their team-mates, and while they're very, very rare when you find one, you often see that the team enjoys some success around them. Judd and Ablett being two good examples.

I have a strong feeling Sylvia is harder at the contest than Ablett. In fact, I know he is. With that in mind, on paper, Colin is the superior player. Can kick it further, is a bit quicker I daresay, tackles a lot more and a lot harder... Perhaps doesn't have Ablett's evasion, and maybe not the footy brain. But if you take out the intangibles, Colin is a better player... The longer I go in this thread, the more I think he'll hold our 2011 in his hands as much as a Jamar/Frawley.

what else do you fantasise about ..?

  9. Of course, and so they should.

What use is a player who can't perform in finals?

    wtf ?

well he's labelled jurrah soft and would rather pass judgement once he has performed in a final to prove otherwise. my question to him is based on the other members of the top 6 not having played finals either. does he perceive them as soft as Jurrah ? and would they face the same criteria having taken backward steps or been shy of a contest, that if they played in a final would they also go up the rankings.

it's a fair question which has been left unanswered.

  10. isnt 1 uncontracted player per club going to gold coast?

Gold Coast have taken their 8 uncontracted players. they could have as much as 16 , but they elected to take only 8./ it is done. they were allowed one from each club. perhaps two if they sought approval or permission.

  11. I wish some posters would read things more carefully before engaging in unwarranted personal attacks especially in dealing with these hypothetical whimsical topics that are just opinion based. I lamented he was crippled in his final game because it was a tragic shame his career ended this way and he also missed out on a GF after such an outstanding career. If he was fit that game we would have won. As for the pension comment it was relavent as it was common knowledge it was his final year. He played out his career on the forward line as many quality veterans do to ensure they have a good chance of seeing out the year. I also acknowleged that he performed there to his usual high standard. It was a shame his career ended just as we were getting relavent again.

For the purpose of this topic I would agree with Tommo that he would be unsuited for a sub because he would be a regulation first pick starter in any game. It is beneath him to be a sub. Thats why I'd prefer a more multi role type like Grinter. But I do agree with you there was not much incentive to go to a Dee's game then without him playing.

this is what you should have said in the first place. your "pension fund" line was out of line in the manner it was said. Flower was such a great contributor to this club (and such a club legend), particularly his slast season in '87 and getting into the finals by significantly contributing to the cause. as already mapped out by RR & Roost It.

  12. ranked 5th the aussies. time for a change or two.

    IN: Smith

    OUT: NORTH

top order should remain the same for ashes - katich, watson, ponting, clarke & Mr.cricket. then this can be looked at afterwards. smith should be given a go for north who bats well once a series when the pressure is off. aussies could go in with two spinners depending on the wicket, but gives chance for smith to come in as a bat that can bowl a bit too. would make more runs in one innings than north in three.

  13. touched a nerve there?

if you know more about said subject why don't you share it and explain why the fd should take a "risk" rather than a broad brushed rant of indignation

they can sift through the firesale players if need be come psd time. until then focus should be on the draft & drafting kids, not used players. Players are usually cut for a reason.

  14. There's a clear top 6, which is evident in many posts. I have Morton 7.

I have Jurrah 6, which isn't as high as some, but while he's as exciting as it gets, he's also soft. He'll have a lot of hard nosed pressure put on him by good teams. If he can stand up to that pressure in a final then he'll move up my rankings. Until he can perform in a final I'll reserve further judgment.

what about the rest of your top 6 Hannabal, will they move up in your rankings when they play in a final and stand up to the pressure ?

    my order:

    Scully

    Frawley

    Jurrah

    Watts

    Grimes

    Trengove

    Morton

    Gysberts

    Garland

    Petterd

    Bennell

    McKenzie

    Wonaeamirri

    Tapscott

    Gawn
