The lack of forward thinking, plebian thinking and lack of progress under straight sets Simon have made me hesitant to renew my membership this year. It would have been my 70th consecutive year. I'm still thinking about it, but have little faith in this administration group.

look I'm one of the worst posters on here but this is ridiculous.

Our media department all have ticktok brains. 1 minute videos with pegs, coins, forks, candles and Taylor Swift lyrics. Made for 8 year Olds. It's an insult too our intelligence.

I work in comms and it is a daily battle for me. I argue weekly that we need good quality content that takes time to produce. The outcome is quickfire memes that get good engagement but die in the [censored] quickly. Does nothing for brand recognition or growth and merely boosts your social media klout albeit temporarily. The people you're targeting aren't organically engaged in your primary product and so when you actually start talking about football, they disengage.

    It's the offseason.

You could run Top 100 goals, marks, plays, and tackles for 2023. Countdown of the best games vs each appointment. Interviews with players. Instead we get TikToky garbage.

    This is my daily battle.

I have looked at the first 6 rounds and this will setup the whole season because if we get a good start then top 4 will become easier but if we start poorly then it will make it that much harder.

Starting the season poorly makes finishing in the top 4 more difficult?

    Huge if true, durango.

What can happen when a team is in contention is that a team can have a gap year.  Happens quite a lot

So even though I believe we're good to go for the next 5 years, we may have a year or 2 in there where we don't perform to our best. Or we have a rash if injuries or we don't have luck on our side

For instance, for years people kept writing off Geelong off but they kept bobbing up

And I've been keen observer of how the best teams have gone about it.  Their window often just stays open as they keep recruiting well

So if Jason Taylor isn't the most important pillar at the Demons, who is?  He keeps recruiting good players and if you keep adding 2 or 3 good players to the team, year after year, you'll remain in contention

    That stands to reason

So last year we added JVR, McVee  & Hunter to the team along with Grundy who was by no means a poor player

Along the way you have to add A grade talent and that's where the savvy recruiting comes into play.  Free agency, trading and somehow working our way up in the draft is the way to go about it

And that's what we continue to do

We're just not going to win the premiership every time we're in contention.  The key to it all is to remain in contention

Geelong lost Corey, Scarlett, Enright, Wojinski, Ling, Mooney, Milburn, and Ottens in 2011, 2012, and 2013. They still finished 3rd in 2014 before missing one finals series for the decade in 2015. They lost Toohey, Stokes, Bartel, and Enright in 2016, and finished second in 2017. Add losing Ablett in 2010 as well. They finished 8th in 2018 with the league's second best percentage.

In six seasons they turned over a team that won three flags in five years and finished top 4 most seasons and made a GF and Prelim in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

We're not even close to losing what they lost in retirements over that period.

Missing finals would be a colossal failure for this group.

  5. Winning a flag is tough. It's too high a benchmark to set.

In my opinion, Top 4, and winning a final are our benchmarks. From there if we win a flag then it's a bonus. But making the Prelim should be the minimum goal for the team. Not winning the flag won't be a failure.

  6. My wife was 15 at the time and there with her dad, step mum and sister. They only just escaped the wave and spent 3 nights on a hill waiting for support and to get a flight out. She still suffers PTSD to this day. I vaguely remenber Round 1 2005 but I was there and remember we won.

  7. Financially devastating.

Our opening home game is at 1pm on a Sunday.

Our next home game is almost a month later, against Brisbane on a Thursday night. Solid 33k in attendance.

Anzac Eve is an away game.

Geelong at the MCG might pull in 50k but depends on how both teams are going.

vs Carlton is an away game.

St Kilda on a Sunday at 3:20 might pull a decent crowd. Maybe 50k.

    King's Bday is away.

vs North on a Saturday night. 25k.

vs WC, finally a home game against them. 25k.

vs Essendon, finally a home game at the MCG against them. 60k.

    vs GWS. 25K.

    vs Port. 30k.

    vs Pies. 70k.

Only two of our home games will require reserve seat upgrades for GA members: Essendon and Collingwood.

For the general fan attending games it's great because we have 8 of our 10 MCG home games are against non-MCG tenants.

Financially, the club would surely be livid with this draw. It's a disaster.

Honestly, the whole saga leaves me disappointed in all parties.  During preseason there was such hope and a strong showing of a two ruckman system.  For various (and fair) reasons that style did not show throughout the home and away season... but to have it end in such a solitary manner between the club and Grundy makes me feel bitter as a fan.  In Sydney, I can't rely on special information.  I can only see what is happening in the media and this forum... and most of it just muddies the water.  Grundy seemed like a great and professional player - if he disengaged to the extent people are saying, that disappoints me.  The way Max and the club appear to have behaved and the lack of acknowledgement of the situation disappoints me too.  There may be good reasons for each party to act like this but I have a day job and can't spend every moment reading every tea leaf to figure out all the allusions.  I hope we play well next year and that Max's body holds up against the onslaught (but the pessimist in me doubts it)... I am sad Grundy departed but wish him no ill will.  It is what it is.

My thoughts exactly. We should have stuck with him. No idea what happened or what the real reasoning was. We were playing better than people realised with him in the squad. Would love a deep dive of how we did holistically with him playing vs not. I'd hazard a guess our performances with him and Max in the squad were better than the two performances we put in the QF and SF. We win both with Grundy playing in either imv.
