Are we the worst marking team in the league?
praha replied to Umpire Please's topic in Melbourne Demons
We were third last ahead of GC and Brisbane with 9.4 a game. We averaged 11.1 in 2016, and 12.5 in 2015. Today we had 7. That said, Port had 5, and the Hawks, 6. Today's mark differential is more a reflection of how much space and cheap possessions Geelong were getting. They smashed us in the air regardless, though. -
Why does one horrible quarter always happen (and kill us)?

i agree mostly but the problem is that the issue persisted in the Roos years as well. Too long to react. we didn't get quite blown out in quarters as often but teams would smash us in certain areas and once we finally changed things up it was too late. I think it's a combination of players and coaches. on field leadership needs to take the game by the neck and direct changes and pace. coaches need to take more spontaneous risks during games to stem the flow. I don't think today was a coaching issue. two way running in the first half was rare. they had 83% inside 50 scoring efficiency. what could goodwin have done? we had an extra player back. they were going in fast and direct with ease through the middle. -
Because he was directly in front, 25 meters out.

I totally agree, I'm just saying though that we haven't established ourselves as a finals team yet. They lost in a way that finals teams don't lose. Geelong were a man down and running on fumes for most of that second half. So were we but we clearly had the legs. Running over non-finals teams in situations like that is one thing. If we don't do it against a top tier finals team, we're just making up the numbers.

I'm still not convinced that we've improved, or that we're a finals team. Today's loss was much the same as last year's loss to Geelong. The out marked us, and were significantly more efficient with their inside 50s. We lost it in the same areas. I still can't *see* us making finals. I'm sure we will. But there's very little to suggest we actually will. That is another game that goes into the "games we should have won" basket.

very disappointing.

i just can't see us winning.

game over.
-
they had players lining up across the middle for a decade there. we deserved to have a goal kicked on us.
-
good. that's his role. he is a target. problem is our small defenders aren't at our key forwards' feet.
-
Trac on track for 3 votes.
-
garlett needs to work harder. oliver jones and Trac having blinders
-
Maynard's goal for missing that target
-
every time they go foward i die inside a little. by the end of the game I'm going to be an extra on the walking dead.
-
god we have to work hard for a goal.
-
they have time to make a mistake, find their footing and waltz it out.
-
actually...this is very much like round 1 2007.
-
You're joking? geelong has been at 80% efficiency going forward the whole game. literally all they had to do was steady defensively and they'd establish the lead. yeah we'll come back, kick 5 or 6 in a row, but we're still going to lose. This game may well as be round 14 2017. We play exactly the same time of football. Geelong is simply too efficienct around the ground. there's no way the cats lose from here. this is more whether geelong is the type of team that loses from here, rather than if we have what it takes to win. Geelong does not lose games from here.
-
unsurprising. we haven't played the mcg well since goodwin started. his coaching is now firmly under the microscope.
-
would you blame them? we are being owned and bullied by a better team. we couldn't even complete a camp.

only round 1 and the pressure is on. terrible at selection. structure is terrible. defensive transition awful. defense awful. make no mistake, we're 27 points down but this is looking like a 10+ goal loss. This is an annihilation.
