I don't mind this measurement but I agree it has its deficiencies. For example Melbourne's offence is not ranked as a Premiership threat according to this chart but look where we are defensively - the number 1. We are the most difficult team to score against by far over the past 4 years.

So you don't have to score big numbers if your defence is so strong even though we would all like to score more.

  2. If anyone was in any doubt that Scott is a - insert banned word from the Demonland naughty list - then this dispells any doubt he is a petulant and jealous child with low intellect

Remind me who won the game again? What a laughing stock Scott is

Yeah I found Geelong's decision to rest BOTH of O'Connor and Parfitt interesting on the same weekend they lost Danger. Though they would've rested one or the other.

Not sure if it was arrogance, were willing to cop a loss at 7-0, or just playing the long game.

Not taking anything away from our win, and it's not as if those both those players are A grade guns.

We had 5 players on 10 games or less. And McVee and JVR on 28 games and 33 games respectively

We were a very young side out there. Maybe they underestimated us.

Haven't seen one media commentator point out our young team. Its all Geelong were off. Crapola

Going on the Adelaide experience, we may not even open things up in the second half, but I think we'll want to isolate Weitering and either Petty or Fritta get that job. We need more from Disco this week too.

If Petty plays high half forward like the other night, the old CHF spot, ideally he drags Weitering with him, but I think it's more likely then Fritta or Turner vs Weitering inside 50.

Carlton played the chip game from half back against us last year in the later game in the H&A, and they worked their way through our zone that way too. But, 1) our zone was nowhere near as deep and 2) Kozzy didn't play. Newman's ball movement is a key for them. I'm not sure how far away Saad is, but he's obviously another key.

I think Carlton will probably edge us for stoppages, but it's about the quality of those possessions and a big part of this is how good our post clearance pressure is.

In his post game interview, May made specific mention of how good our mid post pressure was. We need this again, because they often match it with us or beat us in the middle and they're probably the only team that can really match our mids on talent and depth.

Carlton are great out of stoppage, and we're great at defending scores from stoppage, so again, a bit like last week, can our strength beat theirs?

Disco may play defensive fwd on Weitering. He is too good a mark for Weitering. to leave alone so he can drag JW up the ground where he does no damage

Not really, I can’t seem to ever post a photo on here even when I upload it to a 3rd party image host. This is a bit after a stoppage pretty much bang on centre wing when the Cats get a free kick but look how close to the boundary and in between lines that Riv is.

I’m suggesting he comes 5-10m corridor side so he’s in line with the goals to the ball and depending on the state of the game he either comes 10m up so he can pressure and receive handballs or 10m back so he’s a genuine intercepting option.

I'd say he is guarding the quick kick fwd plus the backward handball if we clear the stoppage.

Very interesting Leaderboard with May Lever3 and 4

  7. Interesting footage on Sunday Footy Show showing the pies keeping the Carlton mids away from the centre bounce.

Pendles physically kept cripps 5-7m away from the contest. Another pie kept Walsh away.

It really disrupted the Carlton clearance machine

And these guys, Windsor excepted are off the radar to the rest of the afl, meaning they are not high draft picks, not making headlines, but developing into important players for the dees.

    Fantastic!

    And lets not forget

    • McVee 33 games
    • Roo 28

    To add to:

    • Taj 10
    • Laurie 9
    • Howes 8
    • Windsor 8
    • Turner 5

I think its the benefit of a systems based game plan where players learn their roles....

Reckon that was the best contested marking performance by a MFC key position player since Neitz.

    Please. Max is the GOAT

Petty had a great game though. He's nearly back to where we thought he could be A few decisions he would like back but that performance would put fear into oppositions

Not quite in agreement with this but you are not far off. Our problem of years gone by is we are not creative going into 50. Now you can debate system and method as reasons why, but we always butchered our i50 kicking by bombing it long when there were clearly better options. This is why we got Billings as a HF. To me, having both talent by foot at HB and HF is the magical formula, because you can create the transition by using the space and move it quickly and use the HF kicking to hit targets. You are right about Trac in that when we get out the back, he is much more accurate in putting the kick (with precision) in the space behind the defence.

Because we have always played defence first we have been very timid when we go fwd lest a t/over occurs in a vulnerable spot. Players don't look inboard as much as they should when streaming into the f50 because it has been drilled out of them.

  11. Maybe my recollection is hazy but Cameron moves high up the ground to try and drag lever up the ground and disrupt or defensive structure. He's only kicked 3g twice against us. Hardly bothered us at all really.

Not to dismiss him but the more important factor is not allowing the Cats to move the ball with speed into their i50

Whilst Hunter has moments of brilliance, I'm not sure he really offers anything more than what we have in the side at the moment. His underground handballs are frequently intercepted, and he doesn't exactly offer speed in the spread out of the contest or around the ground. I commend his ability to kick the miraculous goal, but he doesn't hit the scoreboard enough IMO to justify inclusion on that ground.

I'd much rather give the game time to Windsor; his skills are far superior and he can also kick a classy goal (though I wouldn't depend on him week in week out for a Joe the Goose).

Windsor was subbed off last week, most likely because he looked tired and turned the ball over.

It wouldn't surprise at all to see him have a break as a first year player. And bring the experienced, solid-bodied Hunter in against geelong.

The main issue for me is that Geelong are fast between the arcs and I am not sure Hunter is match fit enough.

It's the "oh their 7-0 but they're not playing well and haven't beaten anyone" narrative that's crept into the discussion.

Geelong have been the best performed team so far this year. I don't know how one can argue otherwise.

Sydney put in an immature performance against Richmond, GWS went to sleep 2 weeks in a row and it almost cost them the full 8 points, while Carlton have lost just as many quarters as they've won.

It's a fact that the draw is inequitable. It's perfectly valid to argue that team x hasn't performed or been tested against good sides.

For example, Port Adelaide beats up on weaker sides but performs poorly against top 4 sides.

    Their ladder position flatters them

In simple terms you have to look at our best 26 and say who is bottom 10. Then you ask is he a better player for a particular role than someone in the bottom 10.

    If yes... go for him

I'd be disappointed if the recruitment team have not got a secret spreadsheet where this exercise is applied to every bottom 10 across the league. You can easily add in the "gettable" factor when you've identified your targets to determine the prime targets.

    Everyone is monitored
