Wasn't sure which way the club would go with Newton, but the rest were no brainers for me.

Wasn't your moniker on the original Aimoo Demonland 'Go Johnno'? It's a pretty disappointing end to what should've been more. It felt to me like we were forever waiting for that break-out season, but all we got was a stunning game or quarter here and there.
-
Where are Hawthorn playing? The groups are three of size and there are two teams in Adelaide. It's disappointing that it has to be us, especially when you consider 45HG's analysis, but someone is going to have to play in Adelaide, just by the nature of the setup. I don't see why we are any more entitled to play in Melbourne than the 9 other teams.

He plays one every couple of years.

PJ's touch and go, but I think it's a big call to label it "100% supporter garbage". You're risking getting a lot of egg on your face. I guess we'll see though.

I am assuming this thread is some sort of pisstake (Art Vandelay is a Seinfeld character), but it's on a level that is beyond me. Edit: Got it: http://demonland.com...=1entry201636 . It seems I even got the joke at the time !

I am completely lost.

He had the standard two years on the rookie list. -

Stating the obvious. -
Sounds like the perfect role model.

If I remember correctly, Cameron said he rated Petterd higher than Frawley, but took Frawley first as he felt there was more likelihood of Petterd still being available at 30 than Frawley. Then we took Col Garland at 46, so it turned out to be a cracker of a draft for us. I hope people remember this when looking back at Craig Cameron's record. The other bit I heard was that Chris Connolly said at the time that Freo had Petterd rated at about 6, but their first pick was at 31, and swore profusely when Melbourne took him at 30. Suck on that!

Regardless of whether it's possible or not, it's still a dumb idea. Low cost or not, you're still using up one spot on your list for a guy who has spent the last 11 years demonstrating that he has no desire to do what it takes to be the best he can. With his form over the last few years, he would not fit in our best 22, and you can taken it as a given that he won't go the extra mile to fulfill his potential, because if he hasn't done it in 10 years, he never will. Ability alone is not sufficient for making it in the AFL, yet you seem to want to pick up every talented but broken player on the market - first Peterson, now TJ. The generic rookie listed kid who doesn't show much talent early but gives it his best shot might not have a high probability of making it, but he has a higher probability of making it than the talented guy who clearly doesn't have the appetite for it. I know which way I'd go.
-
Assuming that he'll pull his finger out and give it 100%, right? Nobody has confirmed it because it's a crazy idea.
-
Looks like he could be the first mark on Barry's otherwise good record (early days yet of course). Strauss is still young though, so time is on his side to improve.
-
Hope the guy can have some luck go his way this year (I nearly said "catch a break" - ack!).

The chase on Lewis Jetta is a great example of this. For that to have been possible, he must have been lurking around half-forward to begin with.

Yes - all contracts expire in November some time I believe. For the purposes of an exhibition match in China, I think any player is as good as any other. Nobody cares about the result, it's only going to be played at half pace, and the locals wouldn't know the difference anyway. Heck, Brisbane used a member of staff to make up numbers. I'd have been just as happy to see Jack Grimes chuck on a Brisbane jumper just to balance up the teams like we do in the ultra-social level of sports I play. So in the end, this match is just for show, it doesn't even rank as high as a pre-season praqctice match in terms of importance. To that end, who cares which players play?
-
His contract hasn't expired yet, so it's not that perplexing is it? He's got the same right to be there as every other player. And to be honest, I reckon the squad was selected by just picking the fittest team, rather than the best team.

Some of these posts are excessively harsh. Why all the hatred? Just another player who wasn't good enough, there have been thousands of those before him. I felt we lost nothing at all when he left, so I don't get why people are still so emotional about it.

Yep, and I'm about to go and make an offer on a $2M mansion, on the assumption that I'm going to win the lottery tomorrow. Just as I can't assume that I'm going to win the lotto tomorrow, you can't assume you could "mentor" a kid who two clubs have already given up on. Of course it's possible, but by now it would have to be in the "extremely unlikely" category.

You've got your decades mixed up there old boy, but I totally agree with the premise. If anything, Daniher's persistence with Jamar (ahead of Jolly before Splinters sulked off to Sydney) is probably a key part of his resurgence. Jamar could easily have been delisted before Dean Bailey even set foot in the door. It's been a long wait, but it's definitely been worth it.
-
My only complaint is that now there's a post every day about how this or that dud can "do a Jamar". Outstanding season.

Interesting player. I think he's likeable in that he's hard and determined, and he uses the ball well. Hard to see where he fits in though - he's not dangerous enough around goals to be a small forward, he's behind a plethora of people for a midfield rotational role, and he's not quick enough to be the line breaker from defence (and he's behind a bunch for this role as well). I might be setting the bar a bit low, but I think that if he manages to eek out 50 serviceable games over a few seasons, plugging holes as required, then that's a good result for all concerned. I can't fit him in my premiership side though.

2010 Player Review - # 38 Daniel Hughes (rookie)
Nasher replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Agreed. Hughes was/is definitely an exercise in persistence, and he came so close to making it. Not every story can be a fairytale though sadly. -
Am I the only one who would prefer going to the footy by myself? Sometimes I think I'm a bit abnormal
