  1. One positive is that MFC will now have some certainty that it will be playing at Casey Fields on Saturday 14 March at 2:00pm in a NAB Challenge match.

At least with 3 weeks notice, it can really market it hard to the Casey community.

Advertising should start this week in local papers if the MFC marketing dept is switched on.

  2. i think caro is more pointing out there that we wont get as many people to games, rather than saying that we are intrinisically less attractive to sponsors because we have a [censored] fixture though.

I don't think that is the case - because the article is in the context of sponsorship I think she is clearly saying that people don't get excited about the Demons (and therefore MFC doesn't excite a potential sponsor) because:

    * the club is without stars

    * their fixture for 2009 is a shocker in financial terms

    * they were the worst-performed club in the competition last year

    * their future looks the shakiest of all the 16 clubs.

The first point should be overcome with the crop of early draft picks over the past couple of years - some of which could legitimately be expected to develop into stars.

The second is in the hands of the AFL for future years.

The third should see an improved result over the next 3 years as the recent high draft picks develop.

The fourth is in the hands of the Board.

  3. Hopefully there'll be more info about the community activities to be undertaken during the camp published soon.

    Demons Community Camp

Join in the fun as the Demons bring the Community Camp to the City of Casey.

The Melbourne Football Club will be hosting a range of activities from 6 – 13 February.

The Camp will be kicked off by the 'Connecting with its Community' breakfast, aimed at community stakeholders. Throughout the week, players will connect with the Casey community via schools, coaching forums and super clinics, with proceedings to be concluded by an intraclub practice match.

We invite all community members to participate in the Community Camp, and encourage you all to come along to the many activities on offer:

    Friday 6 February

    “Connecting with its Community” breakfast

Super clinic @ Casey Fields with Demon players (2 pm- 3 pm)

    Monday 9 February

    Secondary School Leaders breakfast

    Wednesday 11 February

    MFC training @ Casey Fields

Recreational football for women @ Casey Fields, from 3.30 pm, with Melbourne players

    Coach the Coach session

    Friday 13 February

Intraclub practice match @ Casey Fields, kicking off at 5 pm

Regular updates will be available on the MFC website, so log on and follow the players' Community Camp journey!

  4. This year will be the 3rd NAB Challenge match at Casey Fields.

NAB Cup match maybe next year and then, in 2011 or 2012, an AFL match against the Gold Coast or Freo.

As a local resident of Casey, I think full relocation of the footy dept to Casey Fields would be a great outcome with admin/corporate etc remaining at the high profile MCG.

This is a somewhat similar setup to Arsenal, which has its training centre at Hertfordshire (a 45 minute drive from Emirates Stadium).

Arsenal in fact has 3 sites - admin at Highbury (its traditional "home"), the Emirates Stadium which it commenced playing its home games at from 2006, and its training base.

The link to the training centre is:

    http://www.arsenal.com/the-club/training-centre

It certainly provides a model for MFC to aspire to.

  5. it would be nice if caro had pointed out that due to our crappy fixture we offer less exposure, because we play less on free to air and on [censored] sundays.

    but noooooo

    She did:

"The fact is the Demons are not exactly an exciting brand. They are without stars, their fixture for 2009 is a shocker in financial terms, they were the worst-performed club in the competition last year and their future looks the shakiest of all the 16 clubs."

  6. The intra-club match is at Casey Fields next Friday (13th) at 5:00pm. That is the culmination of the community camp.

There is also a NAB Challenge match at Casey Fields ay 2:00pm on Saturday 14 March. If MFC is not in the final of the NAB Cup that night, it will likely get the NAB Challenge match scheduled for Casey Fields on that day.

So that would be a couple of pre-season matches at Casey Fields.

  7. The purpose of the community camp is to spread and reinforce the AFL message throughout various communities around the country.

Casey is a key area for AFL - it is AFL heartland (ie high concentration of AFL supporters/head) yet is vulnerable to other codes. It is also a major growth area.

Bearing that in mind, the AFL would support a club establishing a strong connection with the local community.

MFC is making the connections, and the community camp reinforces that link.

Now if they would just announce what it is they are doing next week in the community (local paper printing deadlines would be close to expiry), that link might actually get some benefit out of the camp (and there would be some good promotion of the initiative)......

  8. has nothin to do with the dees although they will use it of course. it has been under construction for over 2 years and will be massive when completed. will even have 2 massive water slides that start inside, go outside and finish in the indoor pool. my kids do swimming lessons at the old cranbourne ymca and they will be moved to there as it is owned by the ymca. i for one am looking forward to it opening!!!

It's actually owned by the Council, and will be managed by the YMCA on behalf of the Council.

The YMCA manages a few other of Casey Council's indoor leisure facilities, including the similarly sized complex at Narre Warren - the Casey ARC which has a wave pool whereas the new complex has the waterslides as jackson45 says.

It will have massive benefits for MFC, being just down the road from Casey Fields.

  9. Is there any convenient transport to Casey Fields yet coz last time I planned on heading down there, transport from the closest train station took about an hour...

NOTE: Due to changes to date & time of match, the information below is redundant.

There is a Cranbourne Line train scheduled to arrive at Cranbourne Station at 4:08pm on Friday (note "scheduled").

The TrainLink bus is scheduled to leave at 4:12pm (sorry, I'm not sure what it does if the train is delayed).

The bus is scheduled to get to a stop 700 metres from Casey Fields (at the Casey Complex - ie next to the new pool being built) at 4:22pm.

    The game starts at 5:00pm.

  10. Info has been published about when it's on (6 to 13 Feb), and today the Members' E-mail advised that the club's Community Camp in the City of Casey will culminate with an Intra-Club practice match on Friday 13 February at Casey Fields (starting time 5 pm).

Hopefully there'll be more info about the community activities to be undertaken during the camp published soon.

  11. There's a special afternoon training session one day next week for Past Players and Officials but I don't know if it's open to the public.

I wonder how the Past Players will go in their training session now they've lost a bit of condition. Some of the Officials might struggle too.

  12. That's not a camp, that's just four normal training sessions at Casey Fields!!! Perhaps with a bit of community stuff thrown in - as per the clubs contract with the City of Casey!

I'd have liked to see them go to Wonthaggi, Phillip Island, Leongatha...areas that are within 30-60mins of Cranbourne and promote the club to them.

You're right - they're not sleeping in tents so it's not a camp.

But the benefit I suppose would be measured in how much community stuff is involved - I think the key word in "community camp" is "community" rather than "camp".

When you look at who is going where:

    Brisbane to Brisbane

Geelong to Geelong (and the nearby Surf Coast)

Richmond to Craigieburn (location of their planned Casey Fields equivalent)

Essendon doing a day of country visits.

And the Western Bulldogs doing Inverloch.

I think there is so much opportunity and need to build the relationship with the Casey community (so that MFC can develop the stronghold it seeks) that expending effort on areas further afield would be a waste of finite resources. There is so much to be achieved in Casey alone.

  13. Now I know this is in the football board, but I read in yesterdays age that the new Soccer team set to join the A-League, might be basing itself out in Cranbourne at Casey Fields...

Now, at first I thought that they are going to steal our thunder, but then I realised that a new team out there could further gain interest in the area, adding further weight to our position at Casey..

can anyone (Casey Scorp?) enlighten me on whether this is more or less likely to have a positive impact on Melbourne.

I think it would help MFC.

While both clubs would probably be competing with each other for lower tier local sponsors, both are looking nation-wide for big ticket sponsors. The competition for local sponsorship probably won’t affect each of them significantly on the bottom line.

As well, as there will be so many new and developing businesses in the Casey area, the local sponsorship opportunities at a lower tier will grow over the years.

The best thing I think, though, is a variation on Club Melbourne theme where elite teams from the two most popular codes in the country (AFL & A-league) have an affiliation with the Casey Fields complex developing as an centre for elite sport. I don’t know a lot about CM, but presumably it had a number of strong points about the benefits of close association between elite teams.

I think that this would be a good thing for all - the new club, casey and MFC. The place is more than big enough for all and the awareness that the A-League would bring to Casey would be just what they are wanting. A couple of NAB matches a year, plus A-League matches, Scorpion matches and premier league cricket and the cachet of the place just keeps growing.

This in turn would make it less of a leap to consider bringing the main oval up to scratch for an AFL game.

I don’t think we’ll see A-League matches at Casey Fields. I suspect that the new team will have its sights firmly on the MRS for matches.

interesting...maybe it could also speed up the process of getting good public transport out there

Let’s hope so – any impetus would be helpful.

…. Casey Fields has been slated as a soccer 'centre' so it wouldn't be terribly surprising.

Casey Fields has been touted by FFV as a soccer “Centre of Excellence” – one of 12 around Victoria (8 in metro, 4 in regional/country).

The possibility of an A-league team being based there, or more likely using it as a part time training base (similar to MFC), is not part of the Centre of Excellence proposal.

Any A-league team proposal would be an added benefit.

Also went to Casey this morning, ….

Casey is terrific great surface, the physio said if they were training at the junction oval they would be footsore after a couple of hours. At Casey

no problems . We left after 3 hours and they were still going strong.

That’s an interesting comment, and something I wasn’t aware of.

I knew that competing with cricket for access to JO was an issue, and no goal posts, but had assumed that the surface at JO was also first class in all respects. Perhaps not.
