Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
And what of the lists he was coaching during those years? What of the rival competition and their lists and coaches at the time? You can't look at stats in a vacuum.

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
I wouldn't say we're below Tasmania - there's no guarantee at all that Tasmania will even go ahead. There's no AFL licence until the government signs off on the stadium, and that's currently a long way off.

Petty is definitely improving.
Agree. I've always felt is was primarily confidence - I've noticed a definite uptick all year in his forward aggression - he's clunking them more often now, and some of the tackles he's prepared to lay are pretty elite. Now, if some of that could rub off on JVR...

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
The first thing Buckley said after Goodwin was sacked and he was asked was that he would coach very differently now compared to when he was at Collingwood. He himself said he's changed a lot. He's older, and comparing a Collingwood list back then to Melbourne list now (and in the future) is apples and oranges. Nothing I've heard from Buckley and his quite considered comments about the prospect of Melbourne going forward indicates that he isn't interested, or isn't the right person for the job. We can't just sign up a coach who wants to coach, we need to sign up a coach who wants to coach MELBOURNE. He's right up there as a top pick.

Yep. Hinkley may be scared of taking a year off because he'll go nuts not being busy with coaching, but that's no reason to sign him up. He may very well burn out next year and want out. I don't see long term stability with Hinkley.

Tracca often slow to get started.
Trac needs to don the judo pants and work with Max V on his ability to break tackles like Jack.

Tracca often slow to get started.
Someone sitting behind me in the Members' yesterday said something that put the finger on the elusive mystery for me: "Trac's too heavy". That's it - IMHO, Trac put in a big preseason that involved that trip to the US, with a focus on (re)building strength. Maybe he's gone too far now - he's clearly the bulkiest player we have, and maybe too much muscle at the expense of agility and speed. Easily fixable...but where he is in 2026, who knows.

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
A question I've had rolling around in my head for the past 24 hours, greater minds can enlighten me: when a new coach is signed, to what extent would they have a say in who sits under them as assistants? Is it better to keep the current roster, or let the new coach bring their own preferred mix?

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
I like to think of him as the missing Shepmates triplet, but otherwise he's a tiktoker who has decent analysis on the game. I rate his opinions.

Petracca & Oliver at the Dees in 2026?
That's a pretty cynical take. Players aren't robots, no matter how much supporters want them to be. For the older players in the group, those who probably only have a year or two left in them (hello Melksham), then the thought of having to start from scratch with a new coach and build a relationship with, for the sake of another year or two may be something that encourages them to retire now. Melksham has already said he's 50/50 because of increasing outside interests and won't make decision on going around again until the end of the year - I wouldn't be suprised at all if he decides to retire. Having said that, the irony is that if they're as close to another premiership as some believe, then they'll hold out for one last tilt. As for Koz, he won't leave, he didn't sign on expecting Goodwin to be coaching for the next 9 years, but starting up from with a new coach is going to be destabilising. Time will tell how much it is for him - and others.

Simon Goodwin Sacked
What should motivate players - hating and fearing the guy that coaches them? That's pretty old school. There'll be members who want a coach who sprays them at half time and smashes the phone in the coaches box, and members who prefer a coach who the players like being around. Each to their own, but I can understand and applaud Ed for speaking his mind and taking issue with a relatively faceless 'Board' who make decisions that the players don't agree with.

Media Madness
Max would never move to another club but if he gets an AA jacket this year, he may do a Joe Daniher and retire long before anyone thought he would. Those shoulders are tired.

Brad Green weaseled out of answering the big 'why now?' question today. Even if right now feels right to him and the Board, they still owe it to members and supporters to have a decent reason why now and not after St Kilda, or after our inevitable thrashing on Saturday... One would assume that the trigger is an indication from a prospective coach that the club is already in talks with, that the time to move is now. But after listening to Green today, yeah nah - that process hasn't even started yet, apparently.

You, me and seemingly few others. I've never understood the supporter mentality that one premiership after 57 years is success but ultimately the lack of back-to-back-to-back-to-back premierships is a pitchforking failure. Onwards we go, but I don't assume upwards.

The reaction of ALL players. Can't see Melksham renewing for one final year now. Can't imagine Koz is not feeling a bit played... who knows - one final AA jacket and maybe Max will call it quits and get out early.

I'd hate for the club to do to Simon what they did to Adam Simpson...that was...gross.

Effing disgraceful way to treat a premiership coach. You want premierships every year, complain that the rest of the comp has changed and when we implement change to evolve our game, there's inherent impatience and indignation that it takes time... Absolutely cynical move to do it now, when we've got one home game left for the season so we can 'send him off'. I'd take Goodwin over Brad Green any day. I await the grovelling email in my inbox... Thanks for everything, Simon... This club never really appreciated what you gave to it.

Who is our next captain?
Why was Petracca an 'obvious pick'. He's never (ever) been captain material. It's not about being a BOG, it's about genuine leadership character, and if there's one thing Trac isn't really good at, it's being genuine leadership material. It would have been ANB (there's a reason they've slotted him straight into VC at the Crows - he'll be captain within a few years). I'll put my two cents in say it will be Chandler.

Media bias
'Pushing back against this form of prejudicial publicity' would be giving the media exactly what they'd relish - a reactionary club that 'can't take scrutiny'. It's just noise. Ignore it.

PREGAME: Rd 14 vs Port Adelaide
If finals become mathematically impossible, I’d expect the younger guns to get a solid run.

KOZZY A DEMON FOR LIFE!!!
Same. I believe he’s often homesick (most interstaters are) but that doesn’t mean he’s leaving.

KOZZY A DEMON FOR LIFE!!!
What a day… I can’t put my finger on how exactly, but I get the feeling Koz and this deal are mould-breakers. Maybe, just maybe, MFC have pulled off the ultimate 3D chess move and are reinventing a few things… Just so happy for Koz and his family, and the whole MFC family. Go Dees.

POSTGAME: Rd 13 vs Collingwood
That is, given Razor Ray addressed that very slipped-tackle scenario a few weeks ago. That wasn’t a trip.

POSTGAME: Rd 13 vs Collingwood
I dunno. The last thing the team needs is players who can’t be honest with each other, or feel the need to censor themselves out in their work place because the cameras might be watching? None of us are inside the four walls, none of us are privy to the agreements and trust players have between each other and it’s the height of hypocrisy if fans are criticising May when we’ve all screamed something similar to players from the stands. I’ve seen an ‘angrier’ reaction from Max when he lovingly shoved Goody as hard as he could with a mighty angry look in his eye after the Brisbane win. No one picked up on how ‘bad’ that looked, on camera. Just goes to show that every player is unique in the way they express themselves.
