Here's a tip for all the kids. When a coach is talking to you, listen to what he said you did well, but really listen to what he said needs improvement, because usually it means one of two things: that you were really bad in that area, or that he rates that area really highly. For Jack, the coach said that he needed to focus on is multiple efforts and chasing. He also applauded that in a few others. This says to me that Watts won't get promoted until he is tackling and chasing like there's no tomorrow.

Who the hell is this Jack Watts character everyone seems to talk about? And when's David Neitz getting back, because we need a forward to straighten us up. Go number 9!

To the footy God's what?

Cam Bruce probably never goes "this is how you handpass, and this his how you kick," because those are not his strengths. He does, however, say "this is how you run, and this is where you need to be to get the ball." Bruce gives us run and numbers around the ball, but he also loses us run when he loops a handball or flubs a kick. He was noticeable today, that's for sure. Whether he was a benefit or a hinderance is hard to judge at times.

But the question is, would a VFL-level Jack Watts make us better? If our forward-line machine has not been fixed by consecutive 50 point victories in which we've scored over 100 points, then would Watts make it better? I'm not so sure.

I envisioned the back of the card being an MFC logo, with the front of the card (the one with all the diamonds and numbers and jacks and so forth) facing you in your hand. So I don't see how anyone could know what you're holding until you play it, much the same as in a normal deck of cards.

Agreed. Bad form. There's a Jerry Seinfeld bit on this, how the same guys in different jumpers get booed just because of the change in outfit ("boooooo: different shirt! Booooooo.") Obviously you have to see it to love it, so here it is.

That's why you need an extra little gimmick like some merchandise or something.

Does anyone think Jack Watts looks like a young, in-shape Ray Mears? We're doing pretty well with Bear Grylls (Ricky Petterd) and Ray Mears (Jack Watts) on our list.

Guess which Warnock brother has been dropped this week? I think that says it all.

That's interesting. It seems that Mark Thompson isn't interested in doing that for Gary Ablett, though, based on his post-match interview last week. I guess he really wants him to stay, no matter what the cost. Most people who are given a lot all at once are less careful with what they spend. I think GC and GWS might also fall into this trap. They will have a lot of money and some pretty juicy picks to trade, and I think they might just be a little less than frugal in their dealings with the currently existing clubs. I hope we can take advantage of this, if it comes to it.

The guy's just trying to get as much money as he can. Good on him. If he stays at Melbourne, that's great. If he leaves, then that's just how it goes. At least we may have a little more room in our cap.

Yeah, I'd be "shattered" too if I got the call up to play for the Dees.

'Kay. How 'bout this? We stick with what we've got now and have the AFL yelling at us every year, saying we'll lose the Queen's Birthday game unless we do something to raise crowd numbers. May I again emphasise point three of my last post. Instead of whining that someone who has no incentive to come up with any ideas whatsoever has thought of something crappy, why don't you put up your own ideas?

First, they wouldn't be considered memberships. Second, the games are the focus and the cards just a bonus. Third, don't be a wet blanket.

Fair enough. But isn't the Heritage Round simply the Rivalry round with different grounds and weird jumpers? Like, don't the same teams usually play each other in both rounds?

I wonder how long DB would have to coach in order to (realistically) get himself back to a 50% win/loss record.

I'm stunned we're not playing it against Geelong. We are, after all, the two oldest remaining clubs.

I don't think it should, simply because these kinds of "memberships" artificially inflate the real figures. But if other clubs are doing it, then I think we should too.

We should call it the Queen's Club Pack and have it grant access to a Brisbane game down here, as well as the Gold Coast team next year (so you've got both Queensland teams), with the addition of the Queen's Birthday blockbuster vs Collingwood as the marquee match of the package. Include a standard deck of 52 Melbourne-themed playing cards and sell it for whatever price the Club sees fit. I'd buy it just for the pack of cards.
