This thread is evidence of why Cornes has the modus operandi that he does as a sports broadcaster shock jock.  He would be loving this.  Trac's long term contract is a gamble, yes, but this signing is bigger than the contract itself, in terms of what i means to our marketing, attracting and retaining sponsors and increasing membership numbers and membership retention.  In other words, revenue generation.

Look beyond the contract and see the bigger picture.

Totally agree. It’s the ripple effect.

I think this assessment is pretty fair for the rest of the year, although I can't see how we can possibly be ranked as having had the easiest draw so far. Using current ladder positions we've played (and beaten) the 5th, 6th, 9th, 11th, 14th, 16th & 18th teams. An above-average draw for sure, but it can't have been the easiest of all teams. In any case it is misleading because the positions of those teams partially reflects that they have lost to us. And I would argue that at least 4 of those teams (Richmond. Geelong, GWS & St. Kilda) are likely to finish higher up the ladder than where they are currently.

Going forwards I agree we have a generally tough. The teams we play twice this year are Adelaide,  Geelong, GWS, Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs. I thought was pretty favourable on balance at the start of the season (not quite so great now with the Bulldogs playing so well). One thing that does work against us is that we play Port & West Coast once only but Interstate. Also, we are always matched against non-Victorian teams in Alice Springs (at least we are not playing in Darwin in 2021) and it would be much fairer if we hosted interstate teams (Brisbane this year) in Melbourne and hosted Melbourne teams in Alice Springs.

That’s what I took issue with: saying we’ve had the easiest draw thus far. Easy? Yeah, maybe. But surely not easiest.

Apologies for the thread hijack, but a final word from me on crossword puzzles .

I love them so much, my will stipulates that I be buried six down and two across.

I was listening to ABC radio on the 186 game day in the car.

Pre-game all the talk was how we were starting to track ok and looked like we were finally improving.

I ran out of reception for the nearly entire game. When i tuned back in, Gerald Whately said

"The Demons have lost by 186 points, and the only question is ; do they sack the coach now or later in the week?"

This is dredging up memories I was sure I had successfully repressed. Still stands as the second biggest thumping in VFL/AFL history. Dark, dark times. Second only to the biggest thumping in history three decades earlier, in 1979, again the Dees, this time at the hands of Fitzroy. I wasn’t at that match; but I did attend the grannie that year (with my brother, a CFC-tragic of the highest order). When the final siren sounded, since it was such a close finish with just a kick in it, the scenes were next-level hectic. I looked around at all the Blues supporters hugging, crying tears of joy; the players, totally spent but still able to muster the strength to do the usual stacks-on thing. And I distinctly remember, as clear as if it happened yesterday, thinking, ‘This will be us one day. This’ll be the Dees, and I’ll know what this feels like.’

That was 42 years ago and like all of us here, I’m still waiting. It’s a good thing we’re patient, right?

    CARNA MIGHTY DEES!!!

    ❤️?❤️?❤️?

    OK, one more appropriation?

DATrippers is my weekly lifeline, WCW. I usually finish, often over several days and usually with several trips to Crosswordsolver, Thesaurus, Mr Google and occasionally Danword. Rarely do I not need explanations from the DATrippers of answers I've got!

David is a fascinating bloke, isn't he!

Oh, he’s the best. Sharp as a tack, and funny, too. Earlier this year I picked up a mistake he’d made in a Wordwit. Not a typo, which wouldn’t be a mistake on his part, anyways. This was a proper error he had made. I emailed him, (of course not before using every available resource to ensure I was right). I told him I was happy to find out that he’s in fact human. He appreciated my finding the mistake and I think I actually gained his respect. And you mentioned Danword, that’s what I call my last resort since it’s literally just being told the answers. I regularly use Andy’s Anagram Solver/Word Finder, where you enter the letters you know and are given a list of words fitting that pattern.

I'm one of those afflicted by the cryptic curse, Timothy.  They are great for exercising the old grey matter and my favourite compiler is David Astle, whose devilish condundrums I manage to solve more often than not.

There have been a few Demon-related cryptic quizzes posted on here over the past few years if you have the time and energy to do a search.  I posted one myself called 'Demonstone's Dirty Dozen' three or four years back.

I bow before you! If I get maybe three or four of his clues I call that a good day.
This is from today’s cryptic set by NS. ?

Only the AFL period, WCW, post 1990, and the first was Wheeler in 1994, so that's more than one a year!

(p.s. Intrigued by Cryptic crosswords at #1 in your interests. I'm a doer (DA tragic!) and constructor (my alter ego johnno2 in the South Gippsland Sentinel Times). I wonder if there are any other 'landers bearing the cryptic cruciverbalist / Dees supporter cross?)

Well, you’ve struck a nerve now! DA is the bane of my life! He and I email each other on a regular basis. Apparently, DAytrippers, online fan(?)club, insist that DA stands for Don’t Attempt. And justifiably so.

Would have a bot to do with ladder position so far this year I suppose.  But only 7 rounds in, the losses against us for the teams who've played us will go some way to explaining their lower than normal ladder position.  Freo would be knocking on the door of the top four if they'd beaten us.  Saints and GWS would be top 8 if they'd beaten us, cats and Tigers would be top 4 if they'd beaten us.  I'm taking this with a huge grain of salt..

That makes a little sense. But yeah, defs needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

  9. Didn’t wanna start a new topic so thought I’d just post this question here...

HTF do they work this out?

I just know that ima be getting texts from jealous non-Dees friends about this and I wanna know what to say.

    WCW

And I thought my sister was bad with FOUR different recycling/waste Bins.

I shall not judge her so harshly.

What is your son saving the planet for ? Not his children or  your grandchildren I don't think !

I’d ask him but I wouldn’t want to put him into the embarrassing situation of not having an answer. ?

  11. Well  if I wasn’t already excited, I certainly am now!!!

I wasn’t expecting to go to this week’s game, but to my sheer Dee-light I am!

    Just gonna share...

I have a husband and three sons, not one of whom is even remotely Interested in footy, nor sport in general. (I must’ve done something terrible in a previous life.) In particular, my 25yo son, a green tea-sipping, vegan, climate-change-active, tree-hugging, incense-burning, totes left-leaning, full-time uni. student who lives in a share house in Footscray that has no less than eight different recycling bins. He takes me to a handful of games each season but that’s usually after I wage a war of attrition, which I always eventually win. Incidentally, I find the most effective ammo in my arsenal is a protracted campaign of “can you take us to Mt. Splashmore?” type nagging. But...

He just called to tell me he’s bought us tickets to Saturday’s game! I didn’t even have to ask!

I am SO not gonna put him up for adoption, now. ?

Round 13 it returns with a vfl match on kayo/fox footy until then

As I’m sure all AFL fans would attest, there’s nothing quite like watching your team win on a Thursday night (in this case, the mighty Deeeeez) then sitting back and watching the rabble battle it out for the remainder of the weekend. ?

    Good.

Are you posting the word “Good” for no apparent reason every 10 or so minutes, or am I just imagining it?

Quite possibly I’m imagining it. Been up since 5:30am. That, coupled with the whole Fritta sitch, and the fact that I’m easily confused, makes a compelling argument for me to go to sleep.

My guess, if top of ladder, we are not acting like it is the bottom.

Forgive my seeming thickheadedness but I still don’t get it.
