Cox, Cameron and also Frampton got barely 14 disposals between them but played their roles working over Oscar in the ruck and providing a defensive, spoiling target up forward to negate the Lions intercepting backs and rebound out of D50. And yet we could not make the Grundy, Gawn duo work? In a final series with no real stand out team, decided by a straight kick at goal here, a free kick given or not given there it is still doing my head in. Whatever happened behind closed doors in the last part of the season between Grundy, Max  and the coach, it cost us big time. And I suspect the fiasco involves some very unprofessional, selfish behaviour somewhere but we will never know.

    Absolutely correct.
    Team Selection 1 against Pies

play 2 rucks relatively equal times to their combo and beat at own game.

Unfortunately he has the last laugh.

And McCrae. He has a hand in it too. Sent Maynard out as his assassin to stamp authority on the finals series. Truth be told Melbourne need a hard man but i dont know if i want to be part of it.

They like most recent GF teams have had relatively good luck with injury to key players. When Daicos went late in season, it was no surprise they started loosing. Lets see how they back it up next year with a limited pre-season and slogging it out for a whole year with an aging list. I fully expect them to compete but they'll come back to the pack - not that they were miles in front anyway.

They will get even more attention next year with every team coming up with and/or refining the blueprint to beat them. They will get a difficult draw. There will be no easy games for them next year (bar West Coast).

Not sure about that. They are playing to a system and players want to play at Collingwood. The supporters are worth 3 goals in ordinary finals, maybe one in a GF. We have catching up to do. Brisbane went close but i think they are not in such a good place.

Agree with everything but the last bit.  I don't think they do.  They are a very experienced list.  Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Howe are all at the end.  One year tops and probably a declining year.  DeGoey is always  one big night away from being finished.  Cox and Cameron are unreliable.  Adams injury prone.  They have a lot of grit, are well coached and have a couple of superstar father sons but they won three finals by 12 points in total.  I think others might get better quicker.

Yes to three close wins but they play knowing big games are close and train for it better than anyone else. Its how basketballlers have trained and played for decades. We are way, way behind their last minutes system.

I know the popular thing to do is bag the umpiring.

But we have so much to learn from that game, and from Collingwood.

They just won a GF with Frampton, Mihocek, Cameron and Cox as their tall forwards/rucks. They are relaxed, they balance defence with offence, and their supporters support them no matter what.

They were the best side all year and it’s hardly like they didn’t deserve to win today.

Brisbane were great, and it will go down as one of the all time best GFs, but rather than trying to tell ourselves they only won due to our poor QF kicking or today’s umpiring, let’s all acknowledge reality - they are the benchmark and they are better than everyone else.

Too late to learn pies had two average rucks who played a part in the ein without being major goalscorers. Lost season for us.

Mate, the nuance missed is you lot completely missing the fact that our players just do not kick to the advantage of a forward or take one more step to execute better often enough. Did you see the stat of the top 10 worst kicks on the comp? Explain to me the nuance? Of course Goody instructs ball movement to a point. But if you think that every kick going inside 50 is to do with Goody's instructio, who is missing the nuance here?

It's this place. It's just too pro-Melbourne. The amount of vision shown of players who just completely ignore free lead up players, an extra handball or an angle kick is mind boggling. How have you not seen this? Or do you refuse to watch vision/hear opinion outside of Demonland?

Spot on. Schache was completely ignored in the game I saw him play. Team mates can easily be the difference between kicking 1 and playing average and kicking 3 and holding your spot.

  8. If we take  away the crowds and close finishes i think the game is at sn all time low in standard. The amount of time players have to get rid of the ball is not as the game was intended to show of kicking and evasion skills.Again we have too many players around the ball and players are not tiring in the way anticipated at end of games for it to break open. I think thats with 23 including sub but more to do with game plans

    what do other think please

  9. Half way through the last i thought pies just told to go hard and dirty abd tge crowd/ umpires will fo the rest. And so it was to be. Even Richo saying you gotta pay them when they are their. Hodge is a suc.  Looking for a career higher up. Brayshaw, well he was crowd gazing and sniffing the breeze

  10. I am feeling very positive for next year. Some of my takes. Max needs support whether he likes it or not. All teams are going after him and roughing him up with blokes not worthy of carrying his bags. Ruck/ forward or forward ruck needed. Mid needs support and variety whether they like it or not. Love them all but a bit unwelcoming of outsiders, in that they are all alpha males and want prime position game time. Need an extra experienced mid and more time for Rivers and co. Need to get langdon back in form and another wingman. Sounds like we have McAdam so with a ruck forward that line may not be as bad as it looked in finals.

  11. I did not see any evidence in softness in play. Strangely i saw no joy of playing from the guys either in the warm ups or game. I know its professional sport by thought there was bit of stress showing from the start and evident when  lining up for goals and of course got worse as we kept missing.
as to kicking the drop punt is vrry accurate with a good exponent of the kick. Sometimes from 30 a ugly old punt kick is easier and more relaxed kick.

Good points but the problem there is - if you don’t play Viney in the guts where do you play him?

Its a good question as we have a defensive forward in ANB. Perhaps it more that every time a game heats up Viney goes to centre bounce. I think slowly restrict his involvement and let one or two others progress.

  13. In regard to bad kicking. Jack is a warrior a super player with lousy disposal from day one. My issue then is the amount of mid time he is given and how we rely on him so much when the end result is often predictable. Far too few doing mid duties and you have a predictable result.
lets say Jack gets x disposals and wastes y. Is that better than say Rivers getting less disposals but finding targets. I just think the balance in the middle needs improvement.

    good list

No fundamental deficiencies that can’t be addressed

Good to hear, although list changes needed. However add Petty and McAdam to forward line and one other and we look more potent. Another wingman and  one or more midfield rotations with a forward ruck and we are looking better. I think all that is achievable for 2024.

I'm sure it's been discussed somewhere already but as expected, the behind the goals vision of the last play from the Lever mark to the Acres goal shows how terrible we were as an entire team (i.e. not just Viney's poor kick).

Rivers is briefly open wide but once he's shut down (Lever rightly taking a bit of time to assess his options), there is no movement short, not a single player tries to get open. We are just waiting for him to dump it long. Despite that, once he does dump it long (and you can see he looks frustrated with his kick for going too far inboard), the defenders don't reset. They ball watch. We also have way too many players up the ground and nowhere near enough in the D50. The switch occurs, and we're light on numbers who are then completely outworked to free up the Acres space.

It's tough to break down one play in the final 90 seconds of a very intense game but we should have been better than this.

Titan, the making of the disaster have been there for a while in that the majority of our forwards do not have any leading patterns or ability skill to lead. Its difficult but in basketball it used to be called having cutters. So a player on the hff or wing takes off the the goalsquare only to cut back in an arc when his man follows him. If the man does not follow him the cutter is running at speed to call for the ball while his opponent is flat footed.

    Retire: Hibbo, BBB, McDonald

Delist: Dunstan, D Smith, ?K Turner

Trade: Grundy, JJ (FA), Harmes, Tomlinson

    9 or 10 out.

    Trade for:

    1 x ruck (replacing Grundy)
    1 x forward/ruck (T Mc)
1 x quality tall or barring that a swing man tall (BBB)
    1 x McAdam
    1 x midfield depth

Take 4-5 picks in the drafts including at least 2 quality picks (ie. 1/20, 6/7, 6/15/20)

I had all nine players gone also with a Salem trade my tenth

I don’t accept that. The stats don’t say that. We lost both those finals, much more than we were beaten.

That’s what makes it so frustrating.

They beat us last two times. Stats mean less than  many think

  18. I havent participated much this year. A year of learnings as Goodie would say for me. Thanks for sharing thoughts especially on the past few weeks Demon mob. In the end 3-4 quality players short. I think we can fix that in draft and a few from VFL to be competitive again. Also accept Blues are ahead of us and not just nlame goal kicking.
    thanks everyone
