    Oh i totally agree 100%

But they didn’t ask to be Captains, they were still in nappies as far as i am concerned. The whole thing was a disgrace

How do you know that they never asked to be captains...?  That is your speculation. As i said... they were not up to be captains nor were they experienced enough. It was a "political " statement for the Club moving forward that failed.

I love what this decision means.
Maxy is the type of person who is willing to be himself in what can be a very conformist and macho culture while still being ruthless in his pursuit of excellence. I think for too long we have used the criteria of either 'speaks well' or is 'competitive and self disciplined beast'. I am not sure we have looked at the human relationships side of things enough.
I have heard that MMM have thrown shade at the decision already though.

    MMM ?

I couple years ago halftime in the MGC dunnies a fellow supporter looks at me and says "Don't worry. We can come back."
"No we can't, we're forked, they don't even look like it."
    "Yeah, you're right."
    He was pretty easily swayed.
We shrugged our shoulders and parted company.
    Good times.

Having said that, I think we do need a home, our own dung heap so to speak.
A place players and supporters can call our own, to strut around like we own the forken joint, enforce a sense of club identity.
I'm sure players would rather turn up to one central place to train as close to the city as possible.
Even if you were trying to convince a player to come across from another club and you told them we train at Goshes Paddock but then we also gotta travel across to bumfork Casey fields too.
Thats when the clubs like Hawthorn, Collingwood, Richmond, Geelong etc start looking alot more attractive.
Then you throw in the extra money those clubs can splash around toward medical depts etc and we fall further down the list of desired destinations.

Are you sure that was the only thing you shrugged when you were in the dunnies at the G ?

I was pretty disappointed with the club this year like everyone, the coaches, the players the admin, it was just a very poor year full of amateur mistakes, wrong messaging, underwhelming leadership and quite frankly a rather sickening response to a poor exit coming off a good year.

So i applaud the changes, the desire to make amends and the fact we have not sat on our hands and just expected we will bounce back. Goodwin is a relatively young coach, and all coaches face challenges, he did this year and im sure he will have learnt a lot, Richo will be a great addition to teh club. The Recruiters have identified areas where we could be better and gone and got players, Jury is out on Jackson for me, but i will embrace it, i love teh selection of Pickett, its a need we have.

Im now prepared to let the last 12 months go and throw my full support behind the club. The past is behind us and the future in front of us. Go Dees.

Like all of us, 2019 was a down year but I feel it started with the 17 surgeries required from the end of the 2018 year. Coming into the 2019  season proper we were faced with many players still in rehab, many players who never went through a full pre season and all this had an unnerving lack of confidence effect built not only into the players individually but the Team as well. To be a successful team you almost need 19 players on the field at the same time. The 19th man being Mr Confidence. Look at T Mc... and even O Mc... one could sense that they lacked personal and Team confidence to the point that O Mc withdrew himself from the Seniors towards the end of the 2019 season to rejuvenate himself.

I recall Jonesy immediately after the Geelong Semi in 2018 saying that the buzz around the ground was like having an extra player on the ground. On Richo, I see him being a replacement for Brendan McCartney only I feel Richo will be more hands on.

My only criticism of McCartney was that he was not seen as an assistant coach who embraced all players but viewed as a Coach of coaches in the main. Richo's role in 2020 will be more of an assistant to Goody as he stated in the interview.

  6. The Press - Best 22

    MELBOURNE

Recruits Ed Langdon (pictured below) and Adam Tomlinson assume wing roles, while first-round draft pick Kozzy Pickett edges out Jay Lockhart to be the small forward but this may be a bit premature. Oscar McDonald is better suited to playing on the second-best tall forward and wins a berth over Harry Petty and Marty Hore. Alex Neal-Bullen had an awful 2019 but is an endurance and pressure specialist and a best-22 staple when in form. Mitch Hannan and Tom Sparrow are around the mark, and Joel Smith and Aaron vandenBerg will have roles to play after neither appeared this year because of injury. Mitch Brown could be the third tall forward, if the Demons opt for a bigger frontline. Harley Bennell is training with Melbourne and could be a valuable addition via the pre-season supplemental selection period. – Marc McGowan

B: Neville Jetta, Steven May, Oscar McDonald
HB: Christian Salem, Jake Lever, Michael Hibberd

    I dislike this.

We have T Mc, Petty, Melksham and Fritsch who can provide lead up options better than Brown.

We have Weid, Preuss and Jackson who can sit under a high ball.

Brown offers nothing for forward pressure or genuine contested tall work and can he really still play key back?

We need genuine key defensive depth to push Oscar and cover May.

And we need the scope to add skilled midfield runners because we haven’t done it during the draft or trade.

The only skilled runner we’ve added is Bennell and he might never play again.

Yeah........... and what if we have a run of bad injuries like a few years ago when we lost Gawn against Geelong at Marvel Stadium.. I reckon it is good insurance. We could have used him last year as well.

Overall very happy and excited by our draft picks. I like that we got on the front foot and traded out next years first rounder to get pick 8. Like others I feel if we had of waited until draft night to split 8 we would have gotten better value for it. Having said that it looks like we were always going to pick Pickett with our first pick after Jackson and I’m happy with Rivers as he comes highly rated and fills a need for us plus with little extra bonus of been good mates with Jackson.

Overall I give us a B+. Job well done, over to the coaching staff now to get their bit right.

great post except we are an A+

It is too early for me to do a proper 22 without seeing how the new recruits look. In saying this, my main thoughts are:

    • Jones should play a high half back role.
    • Vandenberg is first picked wingman if fit.
    • Smith should be played in the forward line, although he would need to earn his spot in the 22.
    • Hunt should be played in the forward line, although he would need to earn his spot in the 22.
    • Jetta will need to win his spot.
    • Petty, Weideman and Jackson will be fighting to partner with Tom McDonald up forward. Petty or Weideman could also fight for a spot at full back instead of Oscar McDonald.
    • I cannot see spots for both Hore and Lever.
    • Harmes should play in the midfield.

agree with all you say especially J Hunt. He is in my Team...  BUT have to disagree with you on Lever. His is in my number one team.

So Jackson was the 4th best player in ranking points at the champs behind Rowell, Serong & Mahony.... so not much of a reach really.

Pickett seems to be the biggest reach, but was still only 0.6 rating points behind Liam Henry so not a huge difference.

Someone has it wrong then if Mahony can get picked at number 34 by Nth Melb...

I always consider these types of things to be a pointless exercise but understand it’s meant to feed all things AFL.

Any sane assessment should be done at a minimum of two to three years from now but I do like our approach more than anything.

    Therefore, I’m not voting.

    Just sour grapes...

I’m a Young fan and was disappointed we didn’t take him at 3, but it’s done now.

Fremantle were the big winners last night. Young, Serong and Henry is about the best collection of prospects you could ever hope to draft at those picks. They’re building a superb list now. Very jealous.

As a MFC supporter - Melbourne were the big winners last night. We gained a real prospect in Jackson and a talented Pickett. MInd you I am biased due to the fact I follow the Demons.

  13. I really am sick of this thread.

Get over it... The MFC will not want at pick 3 or pick 10 a player who cannot play for twelve months.

If you want to start taking bets at whether MFC will take this guy then I am on for $1,000 to say NO WAY.

  14. We need to look at the wider strategy here and it appears to me to be that the Club want to bring in as many early picks as they can and I believe that by this swap we lose very little within the top ten picks but definitely gain improvement up the pick line.

The day after the Grand final our pick range was:

    Picks: 3, 22, 40, 58, 76

    Now we have picks : 3, 10, 28, (future 4th round pick) 97

Overall we have achieved 2 first round picks and brought our third pick overall number 97 down to pick 28. This position is what is more important than all the small minded comment here on this post.

Frankly I applaud the MFC recruiting department for their fortitude in our desire to be a successful team into 2020.

Thinking "out of the box" and out smarting rival clubs is the way to move ahead. Well done MFC

Burgess has a wealth of information, in regards of not only the fitness of an AFL player, but also the mental health of the players.

I think as fans, we may not even think, of the mental health of a player/players; and how that can also affect the out come of a match; and even a whole season.

Just listened to the Burgess interview through SEN over here in America and I am sooo impressed in his lateral thinking and overall presence.

Petracca, Salem,  Lever and ANB seem to have spent their time in the US visiting and training at different high performance venues across the country.  Definitely don't seem to be taking it easy.

(also shows ridiculous money in the US 'College' system.)

FYI: The college Gridiron players do not get paid but their school scholarships form part of their inducement to play to a high standard.

As an aside the Ohio Buckeyes who I follow over here average 105,000 per game.

  17. Melbourne, Richmond, Greater Western Sydney and North Melbourne are among the teams to register their interest in Murray, with the Demons considered as keen as any of them.

It remains to be seen whether the opposition interest in the defender will result in Collingwood looking to broker a trade, or do we pick him up as a free as a delisted free agent.

The 22-year-old has sat out of AFL football since August 17 last season, after traces of cocaine were detected in his system in a game-day test shortly beforehand.

Murray faced a four-year ban but will instead be eligible to play again on February 17, and can train at an AFL club from December 17.

He played all 13 of his senior matches in 2018 after two previous seasons at Sydney, averaging 21 disposals, five marks and four rebound 50s while earning a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination.

    The backline was

    (5) Crompton, (37)Massey, (33) Miller

As for John Beckwith. I recall watching him play for Black Rock around 1950 and think he was recruited to Melbourne in 1951.

The Black Rock Jumper was the Essendon jumper only with the red stripe over the right shoulder. He played in the old Federal League at Tulip street ground in Black Rock.
