I like the idea that is in the OP but I could see something like that being a trial for the future of the competition.

Covid 19 is, of course, having a big impact on our lives at the moment and I believe that this impact will be felt in the medium and long term on all areas of our lives. With regard to the AFL and footy, I can see that the AFL will emerge form this with a tighter control over the footy clubs and finances and also a relatively free hand to reshape the game.

    So, what might we see?

The competition split into two conferences with the teams in each conference playing each other twice and the other conference once? Mind you, with 18 teams in the competition that would result in a season of 25 games before a final series. It would work better with 16 teams as that would result in 22 games for the season plus finals. 25 games per season would not be out of the realms of possibility as that would then justify shorter quarters and an interchange extended to 6 players. All possibilities.

Clubs may support that [censored] the additional games would provide additional income. The broadcast media would support [censored] a there would be additional games to broadcast and the players could be won over with shorter games and additional interchange and possibly retaining larger lists.

If the conferences were decided on the ladder positions at the end of H&A of the previous year, this is how it would work out.

    Red conference

    ·        Geelong

    ·        Richmond

    ·        WC

    ·        Bulldogs

    ·        Hawthorn

    ·        Adelaide

    ·        Freo/Suns

    ·        Sydney

    ·        Melbourne

    Blue conference

    ·        Brisbane

    ·        Collingwood

    ·        GWS

    ·        Essendon

    ·        PA

    ·        North

    ·        St Kilda

    ·        Carlton

    ·        Suns/ Freo

You might look at swapping Freo and the Suns in that case so that the two Queensland teams and the two WA teams are not in the same conference.

I see where the Suns and Freo play in both conferences...    That will bugger them well....   Good idea

    if there was a game next week then I would of gone with;

    out- Spargo, Brown, OMac, ANB,

    in- Jones, Weideman, Salem, Jackson

    B- Jetta May Hibberd

    HB- Harmes Lever Salem

    C- Langdon Brayshaw Tomlinson

    HF- Petracca TMac Melksham

    F- Fritsch Weideman Pickett

    R- Gawn Oliver Viney

    I- Jones, Jackson, Lockhart, Bedford

    EM- Sparrow, Rivers, Hore, ANB

i agree with DeeSpencer, Hibberd needs to stay deep and even play taller if he has too, he has the strength to body spoil a bigger opponent. we cant have him pushing up the ground and kicking inside F50, he sucks at it. if he cant do the job for us anymore then he's of limited value and Hore, Rivers or Smith should probably replace him.

Lever and May have to be the 2 main tall defenders. we pay them both good money, key defender money, so make them bloody earn it. I've seen the 3 tall defence before and I've never been a fan of it. it makes us too slow and we get hurt by the smaller players instead. we have Tomlinson as an option up our sleeve who can go back and help out if needed. we should be utilizing that sort of flexibility instead.

Brown is depth only, and he's not a key forward either. bring back Weideman and play him out of the goal square and let him run and jump at the ball. make it simple for him and just tell him to fly for everything that he can. Let Tmac roam up the ground more from CHF, he cant seem to jump since he did his foot anyway.

Jackson needs to play as a utility. he can back up the ruck if needed and can give us a different look on ball and forward at times, or even throw him out on the wing. the team lacks options atm.

Salem and Jones should also help with the ball use problem a tad as well.

put Oliver and Brayshaw under notice to lift their game and start running hard. i'm not against us pushing either of them out of the centre square, or even dropping them if it teaches them a lesson.

hopefully if this season ever gets going again, we can then have guys like Petty, Rivers, Sparrow, Baker and Hannan pushing others for spots.

and Goodwin needs a forward line specialist coach. i'm afraid the whirlpool aint getting the job done.

An absolutely great post and I agree with all comments

Surprise surprise we're not one of them.

West Coast, Richmond, Hawthorn and Collingwood are the teams said to be financially strong enough to keep operating if there is no 2020 season and the AFL does not fund the clubs.

    Mergers here we come....

With respect you are completely wrong - watch this space. Also read Goyder’s letter 18 clubs going in 18 clubs coming out. Talk of mergers is 1990s type hyperbole. We are more likely to end up with 20 or 22 clubs than less Why? Media rights and the fixture.  Watch this space yep heard about mergers since the 1990s

You are entitled to your narrow perspective. I am looking long term as a result of this turmoil. My opinion for what it is worth. The AFL are not going to spill all the coffee beans they will leave some in the cup to mature.

The only ones pushing for mergers will be the non-Vic clubs - they will want to shift the balance of power outside Victoria so they can drive their agendas such as moving the Grand Final away from the MCG

NB - we clearly CAN support 10 teams in Melbourne, we have been doing so for almost 100 years. If the AFL didn't hamstring clubs with biased fixturing and stadium deals or implemented a revenue sharing arrangement like exists in competitions such as the NFL clubs would easily be able to stand on their own. The AFL looks after the AFL's bottom line at the expense of the clubs. Clubs should be pocketing the majority of AFL revenue however when the AFL hands out a million dollars here or there they act as if they are doing the clubs a favour! They should never have been withholding that money in the first place.

These are  shortsightedness arguments. The League and in turn the Clubs are bigger than you and me and their aim is for long term security. Unfortunately this Virus interruption has brought Clubs back to reality both financially and vulnerability and they WILL to to look after number 1.  They most definitely will start to look outside the square, the bubble of past AFL life  and consider life long deliverance. That will include mergers. The AFL is run by the Clubs equally and they will band together for long term survival against the odds at present. Watch this space.

With respect I disagree with your views. The Clubs outside of Victoria have it made and I am confident that Gold Coast Suns are on the right trajectory. The market is crowded in Victoria and the discussion of a merger has been on the tables for years and will continue to be until it is resolved.

With the now Corona virus cutting income and creating debt for Clubs the next move will be player and Coach contracts that will take a move backwards as far as growth goes. No longer $$$ contracts, reality has to settle in and Clubs will be forced to look at ways of pushing that boundary given the unknown factors of the VFL and its immediate pathway. Financially the AFL and clubs need to start looking outside the square. This is the beginning of that move outwards... watch this space.

North to Tasmania doesn't save any money. In fact it costs money if the AFL are required to fund the transfer as they offered for North to move to the Gold Coast.

GCS to Tasmania (if the Tasmanian govt is still prepared to heavily subsidise)  and merge two to four of the the bottom Melbourne teams. That's money saving.

The media deal has always been a strange one with Foxtel being prepared to pay more than half the total fee for the lesser games. This has meant you need lots of product. The next round will be completely different with say Netflix (or Optus) owning Friday night football and various combinations like we have not seen before. If they can match revenue wise what they got under the last deal they will be doing well.

Honestly I feel that it is inevitable that the AFL will encourage mergers and the MFC is on that ask list. Who with and what it would look like is anyone's guess. (not Hawthorn) BUT I think there will be an inward push by Clubs assisted by the AFL (maybe underground) to be the first and strongest out of this mess. Facts are that we cannot support 10 Teams in Melbourne anymore and Clubs will be desperate to find that winning edge believe me.

Ok Dave, let me try and understand your rationale here. So, if initially I was to provide the name of the player, even at a time when the information was unconfirmed, you wouldn’t be having a goddamn aneurysm right now?

My suggestion is that you need to keep your unfounded comments to yourself. That is exactly what they are  rumour mongering. Makes you look stupid in the eyes of the public... when you cannot backup your statements. Anyway, I believe you just want airtime pushing false and inaccurate information. I will leave it at that.

Sit down, Dave. It took you two weeks to stand up.

You’ve clearly got time on your hands, so go back and read all my comments and its context. It was on the same day where there was debate about another player (from North I think) who was falsely named in the media.

I was strong on NOT naming the name I heard for that very reason. That’s kinda responsible, right? The source of this particular murmur was very close to the player apparently involved and I felt it relevant to the topic at the time and worth sharing on this site.

So it seems the player had another ailment and was isolated as a precaution. Probably a good move, given the [censored] was just starting to hit the fan with the biggest global health crisis in a century, its crippling effects to be felt in every area of every individuals lives for months, years, even generations.

I believe they postponed Expo West due to pressure being put on them from exhibitors and large suppliers (e.g. Well Well). There are certainly concerns, but perception and pandemonium  rule. There's a lot of food and beverage handling and tasting at that show, so that may well be the worry. My missus was there but came back the moment it was called off, more out of fear of not being able to get a seat home than the virus.

Agree that the Disneyland situation is odd. Perhaps at Disney the greenback rules over everything else.

since your report Disneyland as at March 20th is now closed as are all Disney resorts. There are no Expos now running all closed. Sandals resort and most of the other resorts are closed also. fyi

The AFL is a sexist disgrace. Gil has said he is committed to playing the remaining 16 rounds plus finals of AFL at some stage this year, yet AFLW is cancelled with 3 games remaining. I know this is probably irrelevant given it is unlikely either formats will recommence in 2020, but on principle it is poor. It is time to stop treating AFLW as a level of equality the AFL has gifted to women.

Totally agree..  Treating the AFLW differently from AFL is wrong...

I’m not sure if this is being discussed anywhere but we should be getting in touch with Amazon, Netflix, and other online based companies to offer sponsorship tarps to cover the empty seats in the ground.

It will cover the bizarre look of the stands and will provide addition cash into the club, there is literally an entire ground that we could cover in it!

Do you agree with Bob Murphy? Who’s your MVP?

Rubbish Bob Murphy....   Maxy Gawn is our most valuable player. He is our captain, can play almost any position, he id inspirational is almost everything he does. He taps to our on ballers most accurately and overall he is a good example to other players he plays with and against..   Here is proof, from the one and only Jame McDonald just a few days ago.

If there is one thing Max Gawn has never been short of, it's confidence.

Former Melbourne skipper James McDonald recalled a moment in 2010 when he was returning from injury at the same time as Gawn, then in his rookie season with the Demons, was on the mend from his initial knee reconstruction.

Big Max: Melbourne's new captain has taken an unconventional path to the job

"What he has got, and not in an arrogant sort of way, is amazing self belief," McDonald said.

"In my last year, I had been out injured and Max is coming back from his knee reco, and I think I had played close to 250 games. He made the comment: 'There is 250 games of experience coming back into the team this week'. He hadn't even played a game but he was including himself in that experience.

AdvertisementHe is quite extroverted. He has probably always had those leadership qualities there."

Gawn was unveiled as Melbourne skipper on Monday, admitting he was more "class clown" than future captain after he was taken by the Demons with their fifth selection, 34th overall, in the 2009 national draft. He battled injuries and wasn't as focused as he should have been in recovery, having admitted to a lively, partying lifestyle, and enjoying a cigarette.

One moment resonates in the memory of club officials and McDonald. Having bobbed up in the social pages of Melbourne's newspapers during Melbourne's spring racing carnival in 2012, Gawn tore his hamstring off the bone two days later at pre-season training. That injury could be blamed more on misfortune than poor management, but it was a harsh lesson.Ruckmen always take time to mature, but that was true on and off the field for the 208-centimetre Gawn.

"It was more probably those little one per centers that you have got to do. He has, obviously, worked that out now and has turned out to be an unbelievable player," McDonald said.

"There were one or two instances there where we had to sit him down and give him a few home truths. He wasn't the only one. His personality is quite laconic. When your personality is like that, you have to flick the switch, knowing what is serious and what is not.

"A young kid, 18 or 19, still maturing, you have to give them a little bit of a leeway to work that out. It is good that he has worked that out."

Gawn, 28, thanked McDonald, whom he described "as one of the best Melbourne captains", and former vice-captain Brent Moloney for their tough love in the early days. He is still inspired by the late Jimmy Stynes, who presented him with his No.37 guernsey.

Now entering his 11th season, and with 120 matches to his name, Gawn said his colourful history would help him handle the job.

Coach Simon Goodwin said Gawn, the best and fairest in 2018 before sharing the award last year with Clayton Oliver, would have "empathy" for the playing group.

Gawn, also a three-time All-Australian, said he had developed as a leader, having been in the leadership group last season.

"I had been laminated the class clown when I first got drafted. It took me a while to shake that. Being able to have a jovial conversation at the same time as being able to hit that person up is almost one of my strengths now," Gawn said.

Schooled at McKinnon Secondary College in Melbourne's south-east, Gawn joked that he initially had found it hard to get that "private-school relationship going" when he joined the Demons.

    Jack Viney

"The guys were more Brighton Grammar but I got there eventually," he said.

However, Gawn can now quickly flick that switch to a more serious note.

"I have been through every position available. I have played 50 AFL games in a row, I played one year when I went one VFL, one AFL for the whole season. I played one year all the way down in the VFL. I have been injured for a whole year," he said.

"I definitely have been involved in almost everything that you can at a football club. I have been unprofessional and I have now got my habits and standards to a level that is good enough to lead a club."

That is ok with the comments you came out with Jeremy.  The thing is that  the Melbourne boys are competitive as all the clubs are. they do not forget certain comment at the club.

The  problem is that they won't forget it and will use it for motivation.  It will be just what we need.  It could cost  the wobbles a spot in the eight in the end of things.  I wouldn't be too disappointed  if you injured yourself somehow.

You played 100 games for us and became an automatic MCC member for the achievement. You don't get that from a feral football club as the one you are playing for.

Howe was given every chance when at MFC. He was and still is  a selfish player who would rather play where he wants to rather than be a fully fledged input at a Club....  I have no time for him or his sadistic comments.

Also big question what if Langdon or Tommo are beaten or injured? Who goes wing? ( or half forward?)

I think Salem Or Harmes or  Lockhart would be among my first choices!!

Letd see what the selectors producer?

That injury problem  has not eventuated yet so I will pass on the decision to answer your question.. I am an optimist when it comes to that ....

Yes great question. Not Any of the talls Omac Maysie and Jake if the 3 are necessary as in Round 1.

On exposed form Hibbo is the one under pressure. However Have the Selectors Got the balls to make a change?

Or is JayL in the 22 which seems the answer. Would be a good match up for Ryan who may be a bit quick for Jets or Salo. (Am I underestimating them?)

I understand your comments but in 2019 Hibbo averaged K 13.25 HB 8.36 M 5.28 and Disposals 21.69... Last game against Hawthorn I felt he was definitely one of our better players. Don't forget he has a wealth of experience too.

Lockhart has surprised everyone and I feel he will get better. Harmes to the Centre and that allows Salem to come back into the HB

What do you thin ?  and if they go with this who goes out ???

    Hard decision
